This is always an interesting topic. For those who have been around the forums for awhile, this thread pops up every so often with some of the same names, and different names as well. Because of the growth of tournament poker, that is now the focus. Obviously there is nothing wrong with that. But please keep a couple of things in mind. A lot of the tournament superstars you see on TV are BUSTED. It costs well over 250k a year to play on an annual basis in most of the large tourneys. Factor in airfare, living, etc.I hope that some of the younger guys here who are having success in tourneys practice good br management, or they too will end up busto. Even if you hear that some big pro won a ton of cash in a tourney, he might be so far in the whole with his backer, that he is still broke. Sad but true. I know that winning tourneys is very exciting. But in order to truly succeed in the business, you MUST learn how to play cash games well. Good Luck.Steve

So, *that's* why Smash always said the hero in Rounders was Kanish.

No, I totally disagree with that. There was no hero in Rounders. Ideally you want to learn how to play tournaments as well as cash games. Knish was a miserable, miserable character, not someone that you want to emulate in real life.

He beat the game and supported himself and a family? Is that not admirable?

that's what I was thinking. He supported himself, helped out other players, only played beatable games, etc.I don't think you "must" play tourneys by any means. If anything, I think its more commendable for people who never go for the big score, but are happy playing wherever they can find the highest EV.

Yeah I used to play exclusively tournaments but I realize how hard it is to make money in those so I'm starting to pick up cash games. Good post Steve.

I'm just curious for those who are willing to share - how old are those brilliant players who have been mentioned/how many years have you been playing?
Don't know if I'm one of the ones you're inquiring about, but I'm 18 :insert wink here: and have been playing for just over 2 years seriously.

Honestly I don't want to argue this point. But Knish had not grown as a poker player in years, and he was a miserable man who did NOT like playing poker. Yes, he supported his family, and he was a winnng player. Many people sit at a desk, and support their families as well........nothing wrong with that either.

maybe i have to watch it again, but seems like you're seeing a lot of things that weren't there. either way, i don't think those are the aspects that DDIDM and I were referring to.

Knish had not grown as a poker player in years??Is there some sort of pre-quel I missed or back story? How do you know that?I've watched the movie 3 or 4 times and it starts by saying that he's a legend in the city. He plays cash games and has good enough BR management to play throughout his whole life and support a pretty decent lifestyle even though he has to give cash to his ex-wife.When he sits down at the Taj he mentions that he was going to make "real" money but will hang out with Mike at the...er, was it 10/20 game?So he obviously plays 20/40 or bigger and this is based about 10 years ago.Sounds like a man who's doing alright. Maybe not rich but he's the very definition of "grinder" isn't he?

Joe"Knish how are you"?Knish"The same".Trust me, I've been around poker for a long time. Knish is not a new face. This is not a point worth arguing.

I see what where you're going with this. You're saying he's miserable because he doesn't share the same flair and passion the character Mike has for the game of poker.Knish doesn't have hope and dreams like Mike does to make it big. The challenge to go somewhere better and tougher is what pushes every person in any field including poker. I know exactly what you're saying Steve. I've sat in games with old fools who look like they can barely stand being there but it's the only job they know and they have to bang out the rent. I'm not sure Knish is quite that bad because he does have heart and tries to console, stake and watch out for Mike. But it's an interesting way to look at the character.

I agree with this. I'm primarily a cash game player, and consider myself a much better cash player, but I also have a fair amount of success for the number of tournies I've played (compared to the tournament players).I'm trying to better myself daily at tournaments, but I'll always love the cash games and use those as my primary means of poker income.- Jordan

he was a sterotypical mayfair/diamond club player. Now all of those guys are at the borg and taj grinding out livings. I never liked playing with them because they would always chime in at the wrong time and berate you when they thought that they were in the right even though ev-wise they were usually wrong. I remember back in 02 or 03 being berated by a Borg regular in the 40 game for 3 betting pf with AKo from the bb PF and then jamming the pot when i had a gutshot+overs+bdoor flush in a 4 way pot. it still makes me laugh to this day

I gotta disagree SOMEWHAT.Knish says: "I got stones to not chase cards, action or Pipe dreams of winning the world series" (or something to that effect)"My kids eat".I admire that. I will tell you why.If I were single, I would probably be living in Vegas playing much higher limits than I am now...because I got gamble...REAL GAMBLE. I got "stones" as they say...before my daughter was born, I would take 1k to the track every Saturday and get on a streak and run it to 2k or 3k and then be betting $300 a race instead of my usual $50...Those days are still around on occasion, but not like before. Family HAS to come first. My Wife and Kid NEEDS the 4K or so a month I provide from the game. I have a comfort zone. Whatever "SHOTS" I take are through my own bankroll building and NOT from my "working" bankroll.I make sure that the household has what it needs from me BEFORE I "invest" in a live mtt.I was "fortunate" (If you can call it that) that I had some deaths in my family that prevented my trip to the WSOP, so i took the allotted bankroll I set aside for that to play the local mtt circuit. When you have family..it is very different. NOW..the flip side.Knish is not a coward. he just has no spirit. You either want to..or you DON'T want to. There is no "try". There is do. You can make your life about "trying" if you want. That is what losers do. Knish is lost. He has no spirit. He has no dreams. His heart is gone. Mike McDermott has too much of it all.Great movie that was.

Well, it's a good thing most poker players aren't miserable and/or unhappy with their lives. :club: Quite honestly, the Knish's of the poker world are why I quit playing live for a living. It's depressing enough to sit in a casino/card room for 15-25 hours at a time, but, then you've got these guys who are playing a little too high and playing with a little too much of their net worth, and bad beats really do effect their lives. At least Knish was winning--a lot of the slimy, down-trodded, bitter old guys who play live, aren't. But, I Do understand, Steve. My first post was a joke. "The sad fact is, most of you don't realize that Knish was the hero in Rounders." used to be Smash's sig..and I understood his point. There's nothing heroic about putting your entire bankroll on the table--there's plenty idiotic about it though.
