Just Finished Camp Hellmuth Yesterday

Although Phil did not do any of the seminars himself, it was awesome. Antonio Esfandiari did a seminar on being aggressive, Scott Fischman did “how to beat on line sit and go's”, and Mark Seif did one on winning NLH tournaments. The absolute best of all, the one that even all the pros attended, was by Joe Navarro, a retired FBI profiler. He is an expert in non verbal communication and he taught what real tells are. Things your body does involuntarily, that you have no control over. It was amazing. He showed us Hellmuth's tell, Gavin Smith's and Chris Ferguson's. He’s publishing a book with Hellmuth in November. If you play live, you MUST get this book. I went down to Caesars poker room after his seminar to play 2/5 NL, and won 2 hands specifically by picking up bluffs from what he taught. It was amazing and really easy. Then it was time to put the lessons into affect. We were joined by Phil, The Grinder, Evy Ng, Alex Othread, John Bonatti, krazy kanuk, poker ho, and a couple others. We played with them for 2 days, did live hand analysis, and got to ask anything we wanted, about any subject. During the first tournament Grinder called people's hands and was 9 out of 10 perfect (except for the suits). We played 2 tourneys. They were both freerolls, but the first had a $28k prize pool, and the second (a shootout) gave away a trip to Aruba and buy in to the WPT event there. The pros were all friendly and there to help. They were not rushed and would really spend time teaching. I soaked up as much as I could.Anyway. I highly recommend it. It was a little expensive ($1600) but was worth it.

It'd be worth it just to heart this profiler seriously. Hellmuth spoke very highly of him on the circuit this year. I seriously think I will be buying that book.

I didn't read anything but the title yet... but I know one thing for sure.... I'm jealous.

There were a couple HUGE articles on it in the ESPN poker section. It goes into a whole lot of detail especially about the FBI guy. I'm not wasting my time finding you guys a link, but go see for yourself if you are bored/interested.

"Joe Navarro is the man." Although it's been said before, a couple hundred more people are in agreement after attending Camp Hellmuth 2 at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas.Navarro, a former FBI agent, stole the show during his seminar on non-verbal behavior. Yes, the show included Cindy Margolis, Phil Hellmuth, Antonio Esfandiari, T.J. Cloutier, Scott Fischman, Thomas Keller, Cyndy Violette, and others, but it was Navarro's thoughts and insights that will keep one's thoughts at the poker table where they should be: paying attention to others. Watch others. Conceal yourself. Keep focused.

Does anyone else think its weird that its called Camp Helmuth and he doesn't even put on a seminar at his own camp?
Well right now all that prevents him from winning is luck. "If it weren't for luck, I guess I'd win every one" is a direct quote. If he started doing seminars he'd have to change that statement. So no, I don't think it's weird at all.

When Phil was around, the pros all ripped on him. When he wasn't around, they all agreed the he is the best NLH tournement player in the world. However, they also agreed that they'd love to get him in a cash game, where is only a little better than average.

I do agree that he is very talented but also an easy mark. I just couldn't help myself. Glad you had a great experience at the camp and you've got me thinking about attending one in the future. Good Luck at the Tables!

This makes no sense, because if he's better than 55% of the players then wouldn't they rather play with the lower 55%??I won't post again, even though the idiots below me are going to spam me... Clearly I wasn't assuming that they were saying that Phil is only a little better than the average population... that would be moronic. They are clearly saying he is a little better than the average person that they would play with in which case you're a moron.

360 - Were you the dude in a white FCP shirt?I was also there with a buddy of mine. Had a blast, especially in the Sunday tourney. I suggest everyone run a tournament sometime with a time limit, instead of playing till one guy is left standing. Its crazy watching the last 10 guys essentially freeroll all in over and over for the last 10 mins, trying to win like $15000 for first place. Madness, I loved it. At one point in the tourney, Phil announced: I'll give $1000 to the next guy that busts out. I immediately shoved all in with 83o, but the dude that called me didn't have me covered, so that was double donkish. :)IMO, the poker instruction was above the head of a beginner, but somewhat below a reasonably experienced player. Joe Navarre was the nuts obviously. I'll be summarizing his info and posting it in the NL Holdem Strat section sometime this week for anyone interested.I think the camp was probably more than I would pay again. I didn't feel that my poker game improved that much for the money. But I had a blast, the pros were accessable and super helpful, learned that Fischman is just a sick tourney player, the Grinder is just totally sick he's so good, and Hellmuth really is an egomaniac. A nice one, but an egomaniac none the less... :)MarkEdit: One other quick funny story: Fischman moves all in on my buddy Chris. He is holding the T8h and obviously can't call this. But the Grinder has a last longer bet with Fischman, and tells Chris if he knocks Fischman out, he'll split it with him. Chris calls, Fischman can't believe he called with T8, Fischman has AK, T on the flop and Chris knocks Fischman out and makes $100 :club:

I was not the guy in the FCP shirt. And I agree with your opinion about the level of player it was best for. I really took advantage of the access to the pros. I had specific questions that I got answered and got into some fairly indepth discussions about strategy, attitude, bankroll, and practice. It was very interesting to learn how each of these pros practiced to get to their current level, and how they continue to keep their games sharp. Some of it was pretty unorthidox, but very interesting. And you are right on the mark about Phil. I don't know how that guy fits his head through the door.I was out pretty early on Sunday. Poker Ho pushed and some guy at my table called for Grinder on whether he should call. He was going to fold, but Grinder told him to call, and he got lucky. I had to call with top 2 pair. I would've won the hand if he folded. F Grinder!Overall it was a ton of fun.
