itwassuited 0
check a made hand which is a certain winner out of position on the river. This is one play which I think costs people an unbelievable amount of money. For example, people love to call flush or straight draws on the turn and they are happy with just checking back to the bettor if they hit it. I find this a terrible play since if u call a bet on the turn a 4 to 1 or so dog when the pot is laying you the proper odds or even when it isnt I think you are obligated to fire a big bet on the river if you make your hand. This is what makes the hitting of draws profitable as the guy with TPTK or two pair will pay you off. People check flushes or straights to much on the river while the original better gets nothing out of betting into a scary board and quickly checks behind them. When is it correct to check on the river.PS John Murphy coulda checked his boat dueces full of queens on the river to Arieh (flush) and woulda won alot. Instead he pushed which was questionable and Arieh folded face-up.
Emptyeye 0
Well, if I've made the nuts prior to the river (Turning quads, for instance), and I've checked the previous streets and induced a bet, I may do it on the river one more time. Keeping in mind I play micro-limits, I've found that if someone fires at the flop and turn, they'll probably fire at the river too. Whether I'd get them to pay me off had I simply led out and bet any street is debatable.Hold on a second and I'll try and track down the topic where I posted just such a hand and what I was thinking.EDIT: Here it is. itwassuited 0
Well that is an interesting hand. Your check-call on the flop is somewhat suspicious or I would take it as so. I personally always bet after a raise and when ppl check after raising preflop and they do the good ole check call it usually indicates extreme strength. If I was that guy Id check down the turn and river considering I cant beat much if i have a hand like 97 all i can beat is KQ or KJ since any pair 8s up and the A or J beat me. You certainly read your opponent well as you optimized your quads, but i think you check call on both the flop and turn would lead many ppl to check down the river.
Emptyeye 0
I honestly would've thought so myself. As I said, though, I was raising with a variety of hands, from premium hands down to like J10o (As I said there, I'm a student of the school of "Play every hand for the same amount"). I can't remember if I actually showed down any of these, but it's possible he put me on KQ or something. Note that if he checked the flop and/or turn, I would have fired on the subsequent street. But anyway, a situation like you described comes up very rarely--if I hit a big hand and the board is even mildly threatening, I'm firing out at it, because I don't want clowns hitting their draws for free. itwassuited 0
Understood. My main point is1. paying for a draw out of position on the turn2. Hitting that Draw3. and then checking it to the bettorMy point is in this particular situation that river card is goin to be a scare card, so many times the guy with top pair isnt gonna get much value in betting. If you made your draw he risks getting check raised, and if you missed your gonna fold. The bet therefore has little value.
