Can You Ask The Dealer How Much Is In The Pot?

Recommended Posts

On HSP DN and another player argued if you could ask the dealer how much was in the pot. DN said that you could and that he did it all the time. I played in WSOP New Orleans event, and when a player asked the dealer told him he couldn't tell him. Does anybody know the rule on this?

It is allowed in most casinos...NOT allowed in others. Here in florida...every MTT I have played in..from $65 to $500 buyin...it is a big nono...Here..you can ask the dealer to "stack" the pot...or spread the pot.

I deal at MGM Grand, and we are NOT ALLOWED to tell you how much is in the pot unless it is pot limit game. We are allowed to spread it out a LITTLE, but we cant tell you how much is in the pot.
If you don't have a good running estimate in your head, you shouldn't be in the hand. Wait; you shouldn't be playing poker. That is, unless you're there for "entertainment purposes."

At the Casino's in Niagara Falls Canada you can ask but the dealers will not answer. The games are session there and the dealers time is paid for by the half hour. Having dealers stop to count pots because people cannot do simple math and keep track costs us all money.

I played a tourney at a cardroom in Long Island the other day and the dealer wasn't even allowed to spread the pot.
You CANNOT ask the dealer how much is on the pot, at least on the east coast. Not sure about pot-limit but as far as NL there is no way you can ask. The best you can do is ask the dealer to spread the pot. Seems as though this is not the case on the west coast. Where do you play on long island by the way?

You can ask but they aren't obliged to answer unless it is a pot limit game, which is not spread in any Ontario casinos that I know of. The dealers keep track of pot for rake in raked games but say at 1/2 nl with $5 max and 10% once a pot exceeds 50 dollars the 5 chip is just taken out then the dealers dont care. Every game I have heard or play in higher than that is session fees.

I'm not too bright, but its a simple equation.number of players to the flop times whatever that raise was+sb&BB if they didn't call.post flop, add the bets and raises.I suck at math, and figuring the pot is pretty easy.guess this may be the one thing I'm good at in poker.maybe I'll become a dealer.

the only reason this wouldn't be allowed is to prevent slowing down the game. I think the guy on HSP was completely out of line, I don't think anybody would think Eli has any interest in slowing down the game, how gives a rat's *** about the dealer telling him how much is in the pot.

At CasinoRama (Rama, Ontario) you won't be told what's in the pot during a NLHE MTT. In fact they won't even spread the pot. They run their tournaments very well, unlike at Brantford (players caught cheating by showing each other hands and softplaying, yet they still get no penalty and sit beside each other at final table!); with the occasional 6th or 7th dealer at last table stating, "I've never dealt for tournaments before" when they are perhaps shortstaffed. This resulted in a dealer stepping on my 'raise after several limpers' move in BB with a hand you wouldn't usually limp with (or play) to steal. He didn't say 'option' and was in such a rush to deal the flop that I had to verbally stop him twice just to think for 5 seconds.

You can ask the dealer whatever you want sir.You can ask him if he likes bagels. You can ask him if he'll dance on the table. You can ask him to deal you a jackpot. You can ask him to play for you. You can ask him which is his favorite Spice Girl. You can ask him if he enjoys the new Justin Timberlake CD. You can ask him to hold it for you on your next trip to the bathroom. However, in all casinos I've played at, they will not give you a count in a cash game.

ya i would have to say that the deal should be able to tell you how much is in the pot, i mean if you go by poker by using math, it can tell you pot odds. how much of there stack (if u can tell by looking) they have put into the pot.(if u know how many chips they started out with) and stuff like that. I find it to be a stupid rule that some places wont tell you how much is in the pot.

This is the way it is in most cardrooms I have been in.
