Finally Going For It

Recommended Posts

this is my first forum posted, although i've read enough to know that between the comments doused with cynicism and sarcasm- there are quite a few dedicated poker minds...this question is for them (although i know i'll probably take a few shots from those quick-wits out there. maybe i should get that, first post hazing maybe)Anyway, alittle background before my question: I've been playing holdem for the past two years and have really become a student of the game in the last year. I am mostly a live gamer, but have been making the transition to playing online, and while there is a little adjustment, i think i'll be okay. So for those of you who have made, succeeded, failed, etc. at playing as a full time job..i would really appreciate and advice you have...no matter how trivial it may seem...i'm nervous but i'm finally going to sack up and go for it!!!

The best advice i have is try to get rid of any bad habits you have eg drinking and playing, blackjack etc. You could be the best player in the world but if you abuse your bankroll too much you will go broke eventually. (i'm talking from experience)

hazing is fun..but.....where is the question to this post ?
At the end of the second paragraph...i am asking for any and all advice you all might have for someone who is going to give it a crack as a living...advice, tips on good habits, tales of what not to do..whatever

Find a nice chicky to get medical benefits from. If you're playing live mostly, maybe try to deal as stable income and play on the side. If I ever lost my job and decided to try to play poker for a living, i'd probably go that route.

I'm glad you think you'll be okay, I really am. But I cannot begin to express how badly you will do online. You see, a swing online is a meteoric reversal into the tenth level of hell, and as such, recovery will take everything you can muster spiritually, emotionally, and telepathically, and even then it may not be enough. The question is: are you ready, hypothetically, to blow a guy for a sandwich when things WILL go this badly for you?

discipline, discipline, discipline. I think obviously the most important part is having a good game, but i think what allows certain people to be successful in the long run is how they react to the tough times. You have to put the ups and the downs out of your mind and stay focused and hungry

I am 25 years old, but i was born on a leap year, so, technically i'm like 116 and ****. Lol. Yes, while i agree i am still young and not nearly into my prime as a player, this was not some rash decision made by some foolish upstart looking to spend some old bar mitzvah money. While age might come into consideration as a variable for success- i think there are many more important ones, that when combined, far outweigh the few donwnfalls being young might bring.Shalom.

uhm...I'd say to have about a years worth of expenses saved up and cut out of your roll. Once you've won enough to support yourself for a year, and still have a big bankroll, I think you're most likely ready to go for it.Do you play limit or nl holdem? If it's NL, I'd probably want to keep a minimum of 50 buy ins in my roll as well for whatever limit I'm playing. 100 would be sexy.- Jordan
