Low M Situation

Recommended Posts

Go myself into trouble in a $50+6 tourney....started with 71, 3000 chips each.I get down to 2700 chips with blinds at 200/400 (did inadvisable steal attempt).27 people left, top 10 pay.Over the next couple revolutions I've only been able to steal the blinds once. The table is playing pretty tight, but it just seems that I'm getting 83, or if I get a hand that I would raise, someone has raised in front of me, and I'm not strong enough to enter second.I'm ready to play with any ace, any king, any two broadway and any pair...probably even suited connectors down to 7...will probably play any queen from the button or CO.That's where I was at first. Now the blinds are 300/600....and I'm ready to move in from the cutoff without even looking, provided I'm first...but I can't get that first play. So, I finally get QJ in MP with one limper in front of me...I go all-in, I win the blinds and the limped 600.Now I'm at 4200.Next hand, I get Ac9c...I go all-in, I win the blinds... now I'm at 5100. (avg stack is ~7000).Next hand, utg folds, utg+1 folds, I look and I see an ace.My question is, going all-in uncontested twice in a row, without showing, do I tighten up here, or do I keep the same all-in range? Especially from early position (we're 10 handed). If I keep my range, I should just push without looking at the other card.Otherwise, what should my second card be before I push?

Typically I like to tighten up after two all-ins. Assuming you're pretty close to the bubble by now and your table is mostly average stacks - no monster stacks and no desperate shorties - you don't need to tighten too much. I'm thinking AT or better.

stack sizes and propensity to call of others left is huge.I"d need a decent hand, like A9s +
Lately, a pf raise is winning the blinds 4/5 times...when it doesn't, usually it ends up heads up, occasionally with two callers.Stacks are all over...I was the shortie, with a couple of people barely covering me, my two steals have put me ahead of them....big stack is about 15k, two to my left...few people from 6-10k...guy to my left with about 12k....blinds would be crippled if they called me and lost.Players know I haven't played in a while, and I'm usually tight, but also know I'm desperate.

You are still relatively low and going through the blinds again without winning the blinds or doubling up will hurt you. Factor in the likelihood that you have next to no FE from Hijack, CO, Button, SB, BB if they hold Ax or 44+ I think you hafta push in with A7+. You don't have enough time to wait for a strong Ace but you have the benefit of a loose call right now, someone may in fact call your call in with A2-A6 especially in the 5 positions I have already named. You have a little bit of FE from the two players to your left because they are in bad position and have to worry about someone after them waking up with a monster so that helps you too. The problem with Ax is that you are usually getting called by A better kicker. This situation may be unique where a crap kicker calls you so I'd rather push here with Ax than with something like 79, whereas usually I'd rather have the 79 because my cards are more likely to be live.So because of your last two pushes I think you need to push with a reasonable card, but not with all of them. I do however think you should push again before the blinds get to you, so if its one of three hands, this may be a good one.

You playing the cash tourneys there shpa?
Yup - Cash Casino Calgary.Usually do well in the tourneys....lately I've been donating the $50 to the tourney, either by suckout, bad cards, or stupid play, and then going to the cash tables to win a couple hundred bucks.I'd rather win the tourney myself....

Push.and dont be surprised if people with KQ/KJ/QJ....and even depending how poor the player hands like KTIt would also be nice to know what your other card was.I might muck A6 and below

A8+ for me, after two pushes in a row you'll get called by Ax's if the chipleaders at the table are getting sick of you.And as other posters have suggested you'll get calls from pretty cards.

I wouldn't push with a baby ace...you're making it pretty enticing for somebody to call you with 3 pushes in a row, and an ace can be dominated so easily by a caller. From EP I would push with AT+. If you have something like A5 just muck it, let the blinds take you down a notch, and make a play from good position the next chance you get.

Once I have pushed a few times I ALWAYS tighten up my range. You just stole quite a few chips and now you are going to give them back by getting a caller that you wouldn't normally get because they are frustrated? It is great once you pick up a big hand after you have been pushing because you inevitably get a caller. You push marginal hands here and I think you lose your edge.

You are getting marginal calls too. Every little edge you get is great. Weak aces, KT+, other garbage. Too often people push with a low M and are angry when they get a caller. The reason for the push is twofold, you need the blinds to survive, and you need to double soon. Getting called isn't a bad thing, just win once you get called!I mean ideally he looks down and the other card is another A and it was the perfect set up situation, but if its a 9, good enough, pushy pushy.

Oh, I'm not saying he shouldn't push A9+. I am saying, you can't push at this point without looking at the other card. You might have done it before you stole the blinds 2 or 3 times in an orbit, but not now. I look down and that other card is a deuce and I fold.

It would also be nice to know what your other card was.
But that's essentially my question....do I push with any ace, meaning I don't need to look at my other card? And if I don't push with any ace, what is my line...and is my suited line different than my offsuit line? Some say A8, A9, A2...good variation of opinions. On a side note, how can the other players read strength/weakness when I don't know if I'm strong or weak...hence the reason for not even looking at the other card....one reason why I don't look at my cards 'til it's my turn to act - had one hand in the BB where it was folded to the SB and he started staring me down...I said "you aren't gonna get a read off me"...he said, "why?"..."'cause I don't know what I have."...."Oh..."...fold.The other reason is, can looking at the other card influence me to make a wrong decision - that is, if I, as some suggest, SHOULD push with any ace, but if I look and see a duck, I may incorrectly fold....or worse, I see another ace and donktastically limp. What I will say is I did push, and the guy to my left went all-in, and the guy to his left went all-in - they turned over QQ and JJ so I was about 3:1 to go from 5100 to 16200 - my card was below J. And really, if I had ATs I'm only 3% better than A2o, in this situation. It was really, besides a fold, or two calls by KQ, the best result I could hope for.

should be "last" not "next", but even then...we're not gonna lose half the people over two orbits.

With an M of 5.7, we're still desperate enough to push any ace. Ideally, we'd like the extra fold equity, but if we fold the next three hands, we've jeopardized our stack more than we would have by risking this push and possibly getting in as a 2:1 dog. If you get the blinds once more, then your M gets reasonable, and you can start letting some baby aces go again, but in this spot, you really need to make another push. Oh, also, in a live tournament, the blinds tend to go up faster than they would online, so your stack is actually even more desperate than it appears. A definite push with A2+ in this spot.

Yes you should tighten up. Nice job and getting back in the game, now you're in early position and you've just moved in twice in a row. When you make these all-in moves you'r not looking to get called, and the chances of you getting called have now grown quite a bit. So go ahead and look at your other card. Anything under AJ is an instant fold in my eyes (even AJ I might fold in early position). If you have an AQ or better, let the chip fly!

Don't listen to this jibber jabber. You do want calls with low M as badly as you just want the blinds. You cannot fold AJ. Of course you are pushing AQ, AK, and AA.
