i've been pondering this decision over the past few days - should i quit poker?i've been playing for years, and most recently in a home game that runs cash games once a week and tourneys once a month. i set aside a bankroll and 2004 and 2005 were pretty good years for me (small winner in the cash games, big winner in the tourneys). so i was cruisin along and considering takin my game down to the casinos...until i became a father. fatherhood changed my life completely, and in the past year i havent had the time to play poker as much. now, im lucky if i play 2 times a month. as a result, my bankroll has taken a beating. only 1 tourney cash + 3 bubbles, and the cash game has been even worse. im down to my last $100, and im thinkin, "is it time to quit?" i never thought about life w/o poker, but now im faced w/ no bankroll, no means to replenish my bankroll, and not enough time to focus on the game as much i'd like to.anybody else ever come to this crossroads? what did you do?

i thought the same thing but for the opposite reasons. im not getting rich playing poker or anything but it was a lot easier to handle winning and losing when my bankroll was 100 bucks and it was all for fun. Now after my last cashout the bankroll is about 5k and wins and losses kind of matter or at least seem like they do. i feel like i should have a gameplan instead of my log in and play whatever catches my eye kind of thing that results in playing above my head or playing below my skill level and taking bad habits from playing below my bankroll into the higher limit games i do happen to play. i feel like i should buy poker tracker, have excel spreadsheets that chart ROI, and post snobby, pedantic, poker rants on 2+2. i never even considered taxes before this year. i just didnt make enough to be bothered. Now i wonder if the mysterious sums of money appearing in my bank account from offshore banks are drawing the attention of a bored IRS auditors who have nothing better to do then go after a small stakes online player. Oh and on top that apparently online poker is a felony where i live.i enjoy the poker but im not sure if enjoy it this much. More money more problems i guess lol and it isnt even a ton a money..just enough to make things seem serious. Meh.

Put the 100 online and play some small SNG's or micro limit cash games when you get the chance. That way, when you want to start playing poker again... you'll have the money right there online and you can play when you'd like.

go where ? canada ? it won't be long before all states follow suit especially if the congress passes anything signifigant. The state governments will kowtow to the federal government ..it will be like the drinking age...federal goverment will just threaten to cut off some aid or grants or whatever and everyone will fall in line.

[aside] I think I should quit poker every time I experience a 25BB downswing. I know deep down in my soul that I'm not mentally prepared for 'serious' long-term swings, which is why I level off my bankroll at $1200 each month. If my life depended on poker income, the downswings would probably turn me into a curmudgeonly, insufferable *******. Who needs that? [/aside]Chris: Did you ever just consider playing for fun? Muck around at the micros with your $100. If you win some cash each month, so much the better. If you lose, who cares? If $100 matters to you, muck around at $.01/0.02 with $10 dollars. There's little point in playing this game if it ceases to be fun (and interesting, of course), even for the pros.

it's like posting that you are on a Tuesday Night bowling league and your ave has slipped 2 pins since last year. Should you quit?
depends...can you still afford to play? bowling is a lot cheaper than poker heh.

thats the thing...i do play for fun mostly. i keep a separate bankroll but i dont keep stats or anything. so...its gotten to the point where the losing is frustrating. its easy to have fun while your losing if you can afford it, but i cant afford it anymore.as for playing in some micro games...well then i'd have to play online...and i dont play online. its really hard for me to sit in front of a computer and focus on the game...and if im muckin around i may as well just play free money. so no...i dont plan on makin a deposit any time soon, even if it is just to play micros.

If you just play in a home game for fun, you honestly probably shouldn't do any kind of stat-keeping or have a "bankroll". Just go play when you feel like you can afford it, and try to have a good time. If you lose, don't worry too much, and if you win, hooray! It's all for fun anyway.Personally, I get most of my fun from the gamble. I honestly, don't think I could enjoy playing lower than 1/2 NL even a little bit. When I play over my head and hop in a 5/10 game is when I really start to enjoy it, and get the little euphoric rush when I play well. I still enjoy playing 2/4 somewhat, but I do that mainly for income.

thats basically the direction im heading down. i was able to start a bankroll because i won some tourneys and i wanted to keep my poker money separate from my other money, dig? after that my poker playing was able to support itself. i never had to withdraw from the atm to sit, and what's more, i never want to. i love poker. im more than just a casual, play once in a blue moon player. but the money i earn at the day job is pretty much spoken for, and i guess im not enough of a gambler to risk that money at a poker table.

"anybody else ever come to this crossroads? what did you do?"************* It sounds like the money is the reason you're pondering quitting. If it's just about the money, I doubt any of us can help you. You're either making money or you're not. If not, and the money is important, find a softer game. If you enjoy poker but the money is hurting, find a softer game. There's tons online.I played all the time before I had kids and I haven't played much in years. 6 months ago I picked it up again (only so much poker you can see on TV before getting the urge), with great success. Bottom line, figure out why you play and why you're thinking of quitting. If you're not enjoying it anymore or you can't afford it. Stop playing, at least for now.
