DN talks about him that way, and most people agree cause he's a *****, but ive seen him make some very nice plays on tv, and am not sure what to think.

Flushgarden 0
I think maybe he's not as hungry as he used to be. Also he probably takes a lot of abuse from poker fans and maybe it's getting to him, so his heart might not be in it anymore.

I think that is where this reputation you speak of comes from
Jam-Fly 8
Hes definately not a tournament fish. he did make some suspect plays on HSP. but no less than Howard Lederer said that even tho he does all the whining, complaining etc. the only reason he gets all the attention is because he is a phenomenal (spell?) card playerhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uqGT6gMvidg

NoSup4U 0
I love Phil, he cracks me up on TV. (obviously I don't know him personally). But he cashed in Event 2 this year at the WSOP, and asked to have it announced so everyone would know he tied the all time record. Now THAT is funny stuff :)Mark
KowboyKoop 0
Is Hellmuth a jerk a lot of times at the table? Yeah. Is Hellmuth a fish? LOL...no. The ONLY time Hellmuth might be considered a "fish" is if he were playing a cash game against other top pros. Then he would be at a disadvantage. At all other cash games and every tournament, he's pretty good.

Head77 0
At all other cash games and every tournament, he's pretty good.At every tournament! He has 9 braclets that is HUGE, however the reason the "poker pros" call him a fish is because he is a great NL holdem tournament player. A great poker player is someone that is successful in ALL/MOST ALL poker games. Whether it be a cash game or an Omaha event or even say a Stud event. Not one of Hellmuth's bracelets is in any other form of poker other than NLHoldem!

He has made the final table in other forms of Poker besides Holdem in the WSOP. He has cashed in many forms of poker. He has only finished first in Holdem events, but winning an event is monumental. The guy is a very solid tournament player in all forms of holdem.
jcpoker 0
hellmuth may not be a fish in tournaments, but he is an ***.i have met a lot of top pros and he is the only one that hasn't been nice. his wife asked for a pokulator tank top and i sent one along to her. when i saw hellmuth at the main event last year i asked him if his wife received the shirt (because i had given it to a friend to give to her) and he barked at me, "my wife would never ask for any poker shirt that isn't mine!"i just said, "ok, but she did. maybe you don't know everything about your wife..." Konidias 0
I laugh when anyone mentions Phil's 9 bracelets... I think Matusow brought it up on HSP about how Phil has 9 bracelets, most of which are from tourneys that had like 20 people in them. But seriously... his 9 bracelets would be a huge accomplishment if he got them all within the past 5 years or something... but beating out a field of like 150 people isn't exactly deserving of a bracelet in my opinion.Winning the WSOP when there's like 10 players isn't anything to brag about. (I know I'm exaggerating a lot but whatever)Now beating a field of like 500 great players and doing that multiple times... then I'd have nothing but respect for him.He hasn't won much of anything lately... let's see how long it takes him to get a 10th bracelet.Phil's tournament game is okay, but I wouldn't say he's the best... or even top 10 anymore. His cash game looks like a big joke. You can't play tournament hands in a cash game. It just doesn't work.
