How I Invested $260 And 3 Months To Win A Wsop Main Event Package On Pp

Recommended Posts

My goal for this year was to try to win a WSOP main event package playing PartyPoker Steps. I set aside $500 to play exclusively step 1's using the following method which I posted on a previous post:"I play steps almost exclusively on PP and have found them quite profitable but time consuming. While I agree with playing very tight in the early levels of 1, you also need to be very aggressive. Of course you will take more than the usual share of garbage beats but if you play enough of these you will more than compensate. I have found that the best way for me to play these is to only move up to the next level when I have a certain number of "freerolls" in the "bank". That way as I move up throught the levels I don't tighten up too much with the fear of taking a 'bad beat' and getting knocked all the way down because I know that I will have more chances to advance. This can take a LONG time but it has worked well for me. I am approaching the WSOP steps the same way and so far so good. Through playing exclusively step 1's for a month, I have essentially doubled my investment as far as the value of the buy ins are concerned. (of course that only becomes 'true' value if you win step 5). Basically, I have a certain number of step 2's available which have a value of double my initial investment in the step 1's. Starting the two's this weekend...."I started on March 3 and as it got closer to this weekend I realized that I needed start playing the higher steps that I already had because I needed to be able to take off work well in advance if I actually won a seat and I am leaving town tommorow for a week with no computer. After building up to 4 Step 4's late last week I turned 2 of them into step 5's. Played the first one Monday and came in 10th for $35 (nice :club:). Played the second one last night and with a few beers to calm me, a little luckboxing etc. I came in first for the $11,000 package. Total original $10 entries was 41 for $410 and I got $150 back throughout the deal for various losses that paid a little cash back along the way. God only knows how many reentries I played on the step 1's....The Step 5 I had last night was my very last freeroll and I had decided that it would be my last try until next year. I'm not planning on making millions and turning pro but I am planning on having a hell of a good time for a week in vegas and enjoying the experience with my girfriend who put up with me spending lots of nights and weekends messing around with this stuff. For a guy who is so tight heconsiders a $22 sit and go 'a little expensive', you can imagine how excited I was to win this thing!

Can you explain your system a bit more? Did you basically play 41 Step 1's and then you had a bunch of Step 2 entries in your "bank"? Which you then used and played all of the Step 2's and then you were left with a handful of Step 3 entries? Then you played all of those and had a few step 4's, which got you two step 5 entries, and you happened to win a Step 5?

steps are a series of sngs. win the first "step" get a buyin for step 2 (higher priced buyin). win 2, get one for 3, etc. etc. If you want to buyin at any step along the way you can, but it costs more...just like a satellite vs the main event.if you win the final step, you (in this case) win a prize package for the main event.congrats to the original poster!

Kind of. I made a little nerdy book that I kept and I would play a step 1. If I went out, I was out. If I got $5 back, I put that back into my $500 I was willing to spend. If I got a reentry, I played again and if I got a step 2, I let it sit. I built up to 10 step 2's (worth $55 each after being in about $200 then) and began playing the step 2's. I came in 1st or 2nd in three of those to win 3 $215 entries. On step 2, you move back to step 1 if you come in 3rd through 9th (I think). I played some more step 1's and built them up to some 2's and got pretty lucky there and won about 2 out of 3 or 3 out of 4 so I started playing the 3's. etc. etc. When it was close, I had 2 step 5's and 1 step 2 left in my bank. As I said, lost it all on the 1st step 5 and won the other step 5. Was hoping to have more step 5's when I started playing them but got lucky nonetheless.

Thank you very much swank I appreciate the help. Maybe it's just me, or maybe it's the way railmonkey explains it, but, damn, that seems too much like work to keep track of all that crap. Poker is supposed to be fun, no? :club:

Poker can be fun if you play for the entertainment...which a lot of people do. Some people take it more seriously and do keep notes, stats, and various other information to make them a better player.Congrats to the OP! Have fun and if you do make it into the money....party it up!!! Good Luck!

Interesting strategy. Thanks for posting it.One of the problems I have with Steps is that as I advance my tendancy is to start to play scared. It took a good deal of time/money to get that step 3 entry. And we all know how well scared money plays. The idea of building multiple buy-ins to the next step is a good one.

Good luck in the ME dude..... I got down to heads up in Step 4 and blew the chip lead and lost... then when I got my 2nd chance voucher back, I tilted that one off in no time... I'm considering one last stab this weekend or next. The steps aren't that tough, and people definitely play scared and tight. What sucked for me is that when I finally realized this and started stealing hands, I eventually got picked off... But to any FCPers who consider themselves good SnG players, you should definitely try these. Its only $11 for Step 1...

Sounds like a good plan. Maybe I'll try something similar for next year. Can you sell your seat or do you have to use it? Does the package pay airfare/hotel/etc? And do you have to wear PartyPoker gear throughout??

What's more fun than investing $500+- and bit of time and winning an entry into the richest poker tournament of all time? All on Party Poker's tab as well. To the OP, great system you devised there. It's a bankroll management lesson, with step entries instead of cash. Well done, and best of luck in Vegas.
