Instead of trying to stop the ban of online poker, you should be encouraging it. It would probably save you a lot of money. Donkey. <3

I wrote to my Congressman and got a stupid reply about how Internet gambling supports terrorism, etc. It made me angry, frustrated, and well, sad.Does anyone have any good advice at how to approach this issue? I have written a couple letters to government officials, but it's a difficult topic to address, probably due to the stigma of being a poker player. In other words, it's kind of like "Hello Mr/Mrs Legislator. Like many men, I enjoy having intercourse with prostitutes and I would like it legalized..." I feel bad for making this comparison, but the truth is that to MANY, MANY people, playing poker is in the same boat with prostitution, drugs, etc. I'm a pretty clean-living guy, and that stigma bothers me. After discovering poker, I almost never gamble on anything else. Honestly, I only have a little gamble in me. If poker wasn't +EV for me, I would rarely play.In my letter, I mentioned the BENEFITS of online gambling. Specifically, the idea that you can get into tournaments for very little money ($1 or even free!) whereas with the local indian casino, the cheapest tournaments they have are about $120, iirc. That's MORE RISK than I want to take. Banning online poker could put poker players at MORE RISK than they would otherwise be taking, possibly leading them into serious gambling debts simply due to the variance associated with the game.It seemed like a good argument to me, but I fear it fell on deaf ears. I'd like to hear others' reasoning. There's probably also a decent argument for disabled individuals, but since I'm not in a wheelchair, I'd feel odd making that argument.

A couple of things I have done and am going to do:1 I have called Branden Ritchie (202) 225-5431 in Bob Goodlatte's office to voice my displeasure.(Really just to annoy them and so they can see how many people oppose this measure) He seemed annoyed so I am assuming he is getting a few phone calls a day on this issue.2 I have written my congressman too and got a similar response back from his office as to why he feels the need to support this measure (John Linder)I am going to write a letter to the editor in my local paper, the AJC paper in Atlanta, and in a couple of papers in Virginia (Congressman Goodlatte's State) to encourage other people to write their congressman. This bill is going to pass unless they recieve a lot of support in opposition to the bill!!

I actually wrote my Congressman the now infamous Jack Murtha, and his response to me can be found here http://www.fullcontactpoker.com/poker-foru...pic=62071&st=20 . As you can see he is not exactly representing me very well. We need to do something because it would seem the goverment has set it sites on our little past time and if they have there way it will be gone.I know alot of people think the law will be unenforcable so they don't care, but the government will get to the financial institutions and shut down the flow of money, which would cripple most players. A concerted effort is definetly needed to stop this now.

even if you disagree with people playing poker online, this bill will force banks to spy on you. i'm sure it's only a matter of time until everyone in America has had some right taken from them by the government and they join the revolt. the pendulum will swing the other way when enough people are tired of being told what they can and can't do based on someone else's morals.i think America is a great country and i hope you can get the government out of you business.

I've heard that phone calls are much more effective in making an impact on your reps. You'll also get a chance to speak your mind live and maybe interact with someone, answering their questions, instead of trying to fit everything into a letter that will just get a form response.
