DonkSlayer 1
"After Victoria got finished raping me it was Jenn's turn. I found it funny that Yoda, from the rail, was coaching Jenn who's only played poker maybe three times total. She seemed to be doing fine with her "no raise pre-flop policy." People who have had a family member/friend or who have themselves been raped take this really, really badly. I've been associated with someone who was on the wrong end of using this word before. It's hard not to use this word in public if you're used to using it with your male friends, I know, and I'm not telling anyone what they should do/say....after my own experience seeing someone get reamed for this word, I see why it's kind of a big deal. The Czar 0
Yeah, I had to reread it. Obviously, we all know what he meant by it, but it is a super sensitive word. We all know that Daniel occasionally says things like this and we also all know that he doesn't mean to offend, but yeah, I see your point.

iggymcfly 0
Come on now. Just about everyone uses that word metaphorically in everyday conversation like that. I don't see why people should be oversensitive about it. If you said that the Mavericks killed the Heat in Game 2, would someone with a family member that got killed take offense? You have to draw the line with this PC crap at some point.

The bolded part is not true, though I acknowledged in my op that "guy talk" can lead to a slip-up in public. Then we get to the jumping off a bridge argument...Don't replace the word with "killed"; instead, use "lynched" or "sodomized" instead and see how that sounds to you, Iggy. The Czar 0
The term 'killed' does not have the same connotation as 'raped' does. Again, I've said it in this context before as well, but I did cringe a little when I read it. As far as him not being a role model, I disagree. He is on commercials now and is all over, so whether it's something you like or not, he influences young people. That being said, I think Daniel influences them positively most the time. Keep in mind, their are a TON of young poker players now (HS and younger who read this BLOG) Again, not that big of a deal, but I assure you some people (probably older females) were turned off by it. She really did take a LOT of chips off of him on that flush draw Funny part was he was needling her so much she didn't know if she should push with such a good hand.
ColeSLaw 0
Stats taken from METRAC (The Metropolitan Toronto Action Committee on Violence Against Women and Children)"51% of all Canadian women have experienced at least one incident of sexual or physical violence. Close to 60% of these women have survived more than one incident of violence. (Statistics Canada, 1993, "Violence Against Women Survey", The Daily, 18 November, p. 1, 3)62% of the victims who reported being sexually assaulted in 1998 were under the age of 18. (Statistics Canada, Juristat, Vol. 19, No. 9)In 2000, women made up the vast majority of victims of sexual assault (86%) and other types of sexual offences (78%). (Statistics Canada, 2001, Family Violence in Canada: A Statistical Profile, 2001)"Personally, I try to avoid using the word to describe a dominant victory because of its original meaning and reference to sexual domination through assault. Given the statistics and nature of sexual assault, that is not an allusion I want to make, nor would I want to cause pain to someone who has had to deal with sexual assault in any way. I try not to use the word "gay" as an negative descriptor for a similar reason.Communication is often measured in how it is received, not how it was intended. Obviously, Daniel meant no harm, but pain might have been caused. It's up to Daniel to decide how he wants to structure his communication. I see no downside to using another word without such a negative connotation if he is able to convey the same meaning.

This world is getting way to politically correct...are you kidding? how many times has a thread like this started after a blog? maybe 10% of the time?whether you agree or not (i do), this is a legitimate concern, don't confuse it with idiotic, meaningless statements. DonkSlayer 1
Ugh I hate it when both sides of an issue, such as being "PC", are so afraid to make one concession because it might lead to the complete downfall of their side. Saying it's probably better not to use the phrase "raping" or "being raped" out-of-context when speaking/writing publicly is not being overly PC. No one would really think that saying "I got jewed out of that pot" wasn't crossing the line, and really it's the same thing as the OP. If we can acknowledge this, then we have a lot more credibility when we argue using "black" instead of "African-American" is just fine, etc.
