How Often Do You Play Your A Game?

Recommended Posts

Whenever big $$$ or a big prize is on the line, whether it be a tournament or high stakes. Usually (lately) it's more often during tournaments. The problem recently has been whenever I really feel something big is at stake I tend to play too tight. Not horrible, as early on this falsely sets up my table image as weak/tight. But once I get deep I often do find myself second guessing quite a bit and not bluffing enough......which then often leads to playing too loose! Finding the balance is the key obviously, and when I am on my "A" game I can perform this balancing act very well. It's all up to the cards after that.

I find that I play my absolute best when I'm playing heads up, because I'm able to gather the most amount of information about my opponent, and because I'm forced to pay attention to every bet, raise, etc.

Solid Topic... Lately I have not been playing My "A" game at all, I have been 4 tabling and clearing bonus as quick and often as possible. I have noticed my game has deteriorated some what. My goal is to build a big enough bank roll that I can play high enough at one table to keep my mind occupied. Also, Like many other psters I have started to play Omaha8 and it has refreshed my love for the game.

Right now I have been playing it every time I go. My wife and I made an agreement that I have only a set Bankroll for gambling (which I only use for poker). So i started out not taking it too seriously and then by about April i had lost about half that bankroll. So I re-read SSHE and now I am really bringing it because I don't want to not play the game.Having said that I have had losing and winning sessions during this time but each time I felt I was playing very solid poker. Since then I have built that roll back up and am halfway to being even for the year. I think with this level of focus I might even turn to be a winning player. I know before I used to be a losing player with the occasional win to keep my wife happy but she got convinced that everytime I went to the casino I was giving money away. Now I am trying to convince her otherwise.Sorry just realized I kinda rambled on at the end. GL at the tables everyone.

Sadly, I only play my A game when the finish line of a big MTT is in sight. Early in tournaments (unless it's huge like the Grand tourney) I am playing my B+ game usually. Once I reach the final 100 or so of a big tournament, then I start to buckle down and really play to the best of my ability. It's something I need to work on, because I'm giving up a lot of potential cashes by playing worse early in tournaments.

Sadly, I agree. Pretty much what I said in my thread regarding the rankings. Thankfully w/ the WSOP coming up, I'll have no problem being 'up' to play a tournament. However, last year after coming back from the ME, I had a long stretch where I didn't even want to play online because it was so much less exciting. I mean, it's hard to go from playing in the ME and for 7.5 million, to playing a $100 MTT on UB for 4k for first. :-)

When i'm winning, and the money matters at least moderately. Also when i'm not feeling anxious or rushed. That is my biggest killer. If i'm not in a patient mood, I push myself to make quick profit and that's never going to turn out good.

I play my A game when:- I'm loose, a little nervy, but not nervous or too chatty- I'm not hyper-focused, which causes me to overthink things and ignore instinct- I'm in make or break situations- My sense of timing is good- My gf doesn't distract me by initiating dopey conversations that can waitStill working my way to a true A game, but it's getting there.

Live: A game about 85-90% of the time.Online: Usually 4 tabling playing ABC poker, so it's about 8.5-9% of the time. :club:

It's a new concept that I've developed from one of my other hobbies...When I take the time to step back and think.I used to just react. Now, I try to separate myself and consider what my move is, and my opponents likely move. I'm not at the stage where my instincts are good enough that I can play by feel. I have to force myself to take the time to try and figure the best course of action.

(cash games) Usually until I double up, and then I try to make too many fancy moves, or try to play too many tricky hands out of position, or just try to bluff preflop at a full table because I'm bored (which is really retarded in a NL cash game)
