To Smoke Or Not To Smoke While Playing?

Recommended Posts

I dont think I have ever not played high. When I am playing net poker I am constantly smoking while I play. In the live games I run out to the car during the breaks and get cheifed out of my mind and walk back in and sit down at the table looking just chopped out of my mind. I think it helps me with my patience and keeps me from blowing up.How about you???????????????

I am reminded of a quote from Homer Simpson, "Beer, the cause and solution to all lifes problems." I don't think that any thing that takes dulls your senses can be good for your game, but I'm sure it makes you care less when you lose. B) Funny post though

Well....you're screen name is DaRockets...so I can only assume you're the kid I pass on the way to the cage with his sunglasses and "Big Slick" T-shirt grinding out the 3-6, headphones in ear and scooping those monster white chip pots....and giving advice on why you played [insert random hand here] a certain way to reverse the reverse psychology you were working. Burn another, Cheech.Welcome to the forum !!

there is a big difference... i smoke a ton and try not to play high, but it happens sometimes, and whether you wanna lie to yourself or not, there is a difference. you bluff more, you play too many hands, you don't value bet your marginal hands enough, you don't think decisions through enough, you miss tons of small things, etc. try playing sober sometime and see, you'll probably find it more fun to play sober than high. seriously.

"Although marijuana significantly increased the number of premature responses and the time participants required to complete several tasks, it had no effect on accuracy on measures of cognitive flexibility, mental calculation, and reasoning," researchers concluded.http://www.norml.org/index.cfm?Group_ID=4369Just take your time and you will be fine. I usually do not multi-table after smoking because of the increased time needed when making big decisions.

Ya that about sums it up. although when you go card dead you can just chill and enjoy your high...for awhile. the temporary loss of most of my short term memory when I play baked helps me forget the bad beats, but it also makes me forget that I've been raising the last 10 hands and and about to get trapped......wait what was I talking bout.

playing high DOES make your game worse. there's no way around it. you take longer to make decisions, and while those decisions may be for the most part the same ones you'd otherwise make, they're not all the time. that one different choice could be a busting hand in a MTT or a 20 BB pot in a cash game, and those are painful.of course, for some players, that doesn't mean that s/he loses his/her edge at a table. that part varies from player to player. it just means that you're not as good as you would otherwise be, even if just a little. don't get me wrong--i've won many a tournament while high, but i won't be sitting down to play the PS million with a joint in my hand. those are for the little 5 dollar ones i do to pass the time.

I've been finding that it hinders me somewhat. I'm in no way a heavy smoker, but it doesn't enhance my concentration, so I try not to indulge too much when playing.

The quick answer to OP's question is NO.But life is never so simple.I was reading an interesting artical a few years back in a psychology study.Apparently if you study under the influence of marijuana then you're better off being high when you actually write the test. The brain recognized answers to questions better because the environment was similar to when the information was originally processed. Studying stoned and then writing the test sober actually caused a mental block for the better part. However, there was a cross study where it was stoners vs. sober individuals and the THC crew lost by a landslide.

I imagine the best being high can do while playing poker is soften the bad beats and the worst it's gonna do is make you tired while playing or make you more easily forget previous hands. But I've never tried playing high, however it's certainly crossed my mind. ****, at least you'll enjoy yourself.

Damn, that means Ari, Gank, and I aren't as good as we could be? Ha, I knew that was true in regards to me, but Ari??? If he stops smoking, we might as well give up. ;-)Even though I smoke more then some small countries, I can't refute that most people would be at a disadvantage if they did so. Then again, if that is what one is used to, I think it would probably adversely effect your game if you suddenly stopped, at least for a period of time until you became used to it.Also, like any sort of drug, pot tends to effect everyone differently. Some might become blubbering idiots, while others just become very mellow, and so on. Personally, I've always been able to perform a sole task (for sake of this discussion, one tournament) to the best of my abilities while 'high', but I feel like my abilities/concentration lessens if I add multiple tasks (in this case, multiple tables). As long I stay focused on a singular purpose however, I seem to do ok. That being said, drugs are bad. If you do drugs, you are bad. Please kids, stay in school and just say no. :-)
