Minh Ly At 2005 Wsop

Recommended Posts

There was no TV coverage of him at the WSOP ME. I remember seeing a guy beside Matusow when Raymer was joining the table, and it was MInh Ly. He's one of the biggest cash game players in the world right ? So why wasnt he on tv at all ? I understand that Matusow, Raymer, Sheikan, Black and Danenman make better tv for different reasons, but switching from cash games to tourneys and going deep in the ME is a big deal. I remember DN writing a column for CardPlayer about Asian players, he took Dutch Boyd and TUan Le as examples I think.Anyone else have any thoughts about this ?

It is because if you ask the average poker fan (we are far above average poker fans in terms of knowledge) who Minh Ly is, they would have no clue. Plus, he can barely speak english, which is usually necessary for entertaining poker TV.

The poker community in general has a bias against asian players. People who have a good knowledge of the poker community (most people on this site) know that minh ly and other asians are some of the top players in the world, but unfortunately he is not a good looking man and is not entertaining all that much.

This is straight from Barry Greenstein's player analysis of Minh Ly at barrygreenstein.comMinh is the last of the winning high-stakes players to get tournament recognition. His deficiency in English limits the attention he gets. He has not only been one of the biggest winners in the high-limit cash games the last few years, but he also has come in 9th in 2002 and 19th in 2005 in the final event at the WSOP, and he won a WPT title in 2005.Minh was frustrated after getting knocked out 19th in the final event in 2005. He was upset at Mike Matusow’s antics and said Mike got him off his game. As a legitimate high-stakes player he didn’t like the disrespect Mike showed him and he said he would play Mike for any amount of money, any time. Todd Brunson, always an instigator, coerced Minh into challenging Mike to a poker duel, right in the middle of Mike’s ESPN interview after Mike got knocked out ninth.

i noticed this too, and yes, i'd have to say it's because of his inability to speak english... also, did anyone notice how little they showed phil ivey in the 2005 me? i mean, he got down to the final 100 or something, but they never really featured him for any amount of time...

Wasn't he at the final table with Doyle Brunson and Layne Flack of the short handed tourney?
he had the line of the tourney, in the final hand heads up against doyle. if anyone has a clip...words do no justice.

I think it was Juanda who he spoke about mostly in that article. Dutch Boyd was only mentioned because he got a lot of TV coverage for accomplishing much less than many of the asian pros who have done so well in the past. Here's the link... http://www.cardplayer.com/poker_magazine/a...ves/?a_id=14465

Despite what DN and other may say I don't think this is an Asian/white people thing. TV doesn't star these people, because they don't talk much. If Mike Matusow or Phil Hellmuth were Asian they would be put on the spot light just as much. However, how are you going to star somebody that can't speak English? Or even why would you star John Juanda? You have to star people who talk once and a while.

ivey got 20th and ESPN chose for their feature table a table of Mike Matusow and a bunch of no names over Ivey, Juanda and Lederer sitting in a row with big stacks.
