Yet Another Legal Thread

Recommended Posts

If some one has a link if this has been discussed, I'd appreciate it. These threads get so big, I have a hard time finding anything in them. My question: Has anyone spoken about the rationale behind punishing online poker players more than illegal Live game players. All the Card shops that get raided in NY, the owner gets in trouble, but the patrons get their money taken and a slap on the wrist. But nothing happens to them. So why would online players be subject to different punitive measures?Sorry if this has been discussed. You can flame if it makes you feel better.

Anyone have any insight into this by any chance?
When things are successful or popular that aren't intrinsicly American, the govt. gets pissed. Why do you think cigarettes are fine but pot's illegal?

I believe one of the rationales for picking on internet players is because of the accessibility of online play. If gambling's illegal in your area, it's easy for them to shut down casinos. That severely reduces the amount of gambling in an area. They don't have to go after the players. It's easier, and more cost effective, to go after the casinos. Shut down the gambling houses and very few people will start gambling. Only the truly hardcore gamblers will still find a way to do it.With online gambling, they can't shut down the gambling houses b/c they're overseas. The only target they have left to reduce gambling in their area is the players themselves, so that's who they go after.
