When Was Your Tourney Breakthrough?

Recommended Posts

Whats up everyone. For a while now (past 2 years) I have been a small time internet player and much more successful live. I generally just played $5 MTT with a few victories but nothing over $200 and mostly SNG's on FT and UB.About a month ago I decided to deposit on Stars, cause I heard they had the best tourneys. Anyways this past weeK has been my best to date. Friday night I won my third ever $20 180 Sng for $1080. Then last night entered the $100 double shootout (45 players) and won that for over $1350.I feel like these two wins may be the breakthrough I was waiting for, as I had a very limited BR due to a lot of personal financial responsibilities. Now with $2500 BR, I feel like I am on my way. jus wondering when everyone had their breakthrough and how it kickstarted their BR.

Congrats. Sounds like you are playing well, but don't get overconfident. This is often my problem....I hit a big cash and then I'm like 'These guys all suck, I can outplay them all night long watch me take this fucking pot.' Stick to your game and keep makin moooooonnnnnnnnnaaaaay.

TW is right on. I won a 350 player tourney a month ago, and it's been MAJOR BUBBLE and FINAL TABLE FIZZLE since then. Those wins are cherries on top.

Thanks guys. Not overconfident yet :club: Have been playing well lately and I am just glad it is finally paying off. I will continue to play within my BR and hopefully build steadily.

Congrats!I started playing mostly tournaments seriously about 2 months ago (in an attempt to win a WSOP seat). Not sure what happened but I have final tabled an average of 70% of them! I can't tell you why exactly but the key for me has been having the ability to know when i'm beat and bail out, and also avoiding the huge pot plays.Best of luck to you!

My best cash was the first tourney I ever cashed in. Since then, I've read books, prcaticed tons and it's only made me worse, due to some universal law of reverse psychology. The big cash was on Royal Vegas, 12K guaranteed, 1st for 3900$. Haven't even come close to busting 1K since then ($575 was the next biggest).

The over 1k cashes come about once a month i'd say. Its the best feeling in the world after you make a major score. My breakthrough was my Bodog 100k Final Table, which GrinderMJ was also at. It was a good feeling after for sure

Mine was at the middle of march where I turned $2 into $500 on poker.com I then decided to give stars one last shot, so I deposited $50 and one day when my gf was going to work all day sunday, I impulsively joined a $10 tourney that morning. I ended up finishing 2nd for $1600. I did cash out most of it, but I gave myself a couple of hundred to play with. After that I began to play extremely well and I ended up finishing 2nd in a $5 rebuy for $4600. Although I have cooled off since then, I have been playing pretty well in tournaments.

Played a $33 tourney on Party Poker with about 550 entrants. Got 5th place for $844. I played the same tourney 2 weeks later and this time got 2nd place for $2200. Previous to these cashes my best was a little over $150.

As long as everybody's bragging, my biggest cash was 1st in a PLO $10 rebuy a few nights ago. $2500ish. Hopefully I won't reverse-tilt it all away. Have made top 3 in much larger fields, but none paid off as much. It's allllllll about the win.

nutz, what site are you achieving this on????Just curious. Good playing keep it up
For online, it's usually FCP, Stars and Bodog. I also won a Nego a few weeks back and and donked away another shoe in FT 2 weeks ago! Doh!On Bodog the past few weeks I've been trying to win a seat on those $135 tournies. Played around 7 of them and FT in 4, my best finish coming in 3rd. (Aces cracked, lol. Oh well). Overlays are usually very good there. In the tourneys on Stars I've gone deep around, well, seems like almost every time! And yeah, i know it's Stars, and these were all wsop qualifiers, lol, but still...deep is deep. I've played around 12 of them, and had two 2nds, a 5th, a 6th, and several 8 thru 10. And finally last night I won one of them for a $650 WSOP tourney this Sunday. Fingers crossed. The rest have been 150 to 250 people LIVE mtt's at the local casino where I seem to have the best showings. I love live play much better than online btw. I've made the final table approx. 70% of the time, 2 of them coming in second. Lemme tell ya....second SUCKS! but $$$ is $$$. those 2 second places alone paid over 1K. No complaints here.Good luck to you! :icon_cool:edit*: I will say this. This latest run is coming on the heals or one of my wosrt runs ever, a 5 month losing streak that cost me pretty decent. These recent tounament wins (mainly tournaments) are a result of me forcing myself to be much more patient and choosing hands to play very carefully, and ALWAYS in position! I know we all know this but I also know most never stick to this, moi included. We end up getting bored and gambooling. Always -EV. This run could end tomorow, but for now, I am playing much better than 5 months ago and am getting help from the deck.

tourneys are a fickle, fickle mistress.last year, my big breakthrough was a 6k win in one of the 20+2 rebuys on pokerroom, which i followed up the following week with a repeat performance. riding that high, i won the big deal a month or so later for 15k, with 4-5 other wins (and numerous final tables, etc) in the middle.in 2006, i've won two tournaments: a NO and a freaking 20 dollar 180 man sng on stars and have cashed in only 4 others. enjoy your afterglow, kids. it don't last forever. those 80% shots are hardly a sure thing.

I don't know if this is relevant but i noticed on stars,if you have a good week in the money it's best to take a complete week or two off from that site.my biggest win was a 20$ 560 player that started at midnight my time,,played untill alittle after 6am and placed first for roughly 2700$....that was october 05.....sence then just a few rebuy placements for a few hundred a piece....and s&g wins and placements......if anyone else noticed that once you take some time off from a site then go back it seems to be more forgiving let me know......[maybe i just going crazy]

i might be crazy too, but i kinda agree with that. i had a run of 30 S&G's of an ROI% of 122% (that's right, 122%), turned 50 into 600 in three days, and then I lost 13 consecutive. Variance? The Party Poker gods turning furious with me? Shrug. Very streaky. What can you do but just keep playing.

I'm new to online poker for real money, only been at it for less than 8 months.I haven't hit a big win yet, but I have managed to win a couple $5+$0.50, 18 seat, SnG's on stars, and placed in the money quite a few times as well for a number of other SnG's.

ive been playing for about 2 years now and won probably 9 or 10 MTTs and cashed in a bunch of others. The amout of stuff outside your control that needs to go right to make first...wow it will make your head spin. In fact i know ive played better in some tournies ive busted out on the bubble than ones i have won. I just try to get my money in good and sometimes the poker gods smile on me.

Actually, I've just come to the realization that my tournament poker game sucks, since I've been playing SH NL ring games exclusively for the past four months. So, in the last two weeks, I've sort of rededicated myself to tournaments.Playing most of the small rebuys on Stars, along with a few regular freezeouts there. Final table bubbled in an O8 tournament, placed 7th in an FCP tournament, and went deep and cashed in two rebuys. No big score yet.Tournament poker is by far the most frustrating thing ever. I honestly don't know how some of you do it day in and day out. I'm literally on day four of this rededication, and I want to shoot myself already. It is just a sick feeling to lose your entire stack late in a tournament to a moron.
