ForRealDD 0
This thread is mainly to the people who do not live in the US. Why is it that Americans don't see things broadcast in other countries ? I know this sounds stupid and you're thinking "Americans do !" . I'm not talking about news and general broadcast, but hit TV series and bands , and movies. Like CU in 4 years has a James Gandolphini image, and people all over the world are talking about "LOST" ...I haven't seen a recent band from another country make it big in the states. Why aren't major movies produced in other countries released on the big screen here? Am I just completely naive ?

ajs510 122
Just because *you* don't watch Telemundo doesn't mean you have to drag the whole country into this. If you were to watch Cooking With Rocks or some other hit show from Serbo-Croatia, they'd have to dub it because almost no one in this country speaks Serbo-Croatian. English is quickly becoming a universal second language, and a lot of people use American TV and movies to improve their English skills. I have German friends, and they tell me that if you want a good job over there then English is an absolute must. It's like that in most parts of the world. Oh, and a large portion of the movies you see on the big screen *are* produced in other countries. They're just made and/or distributed by US-based companies. Musicwise, a lot of bands from other countries make it big in the US. Snow Patrol is from Northern Ireland and has the #46 album on the Billboard charts right now. Jet hit it big in America after coming up in the Australian music scene. The Stones still command some of the highest ticket prices year after year...I could go on.
brvheart 1,753
We did in two hundred years what no other country could do in 10,000. And that is become the heartbeat of the entire planet. Not by military takeover, aka the Romans, Nazi's, ect.... but by the shear desire of the people of Earth. America pwns.
Filesharer 0
As much as I'm enjoying watching this american mutual wankfest...The OP asks why Americans never see or hear about all the great stuff that's made in europe and asia. The answer is who the **** knows. Ask your tv networks. And look on the net for all the amazing music made in england, scotland, canada, etc.

The way the USA is going, you'll be lucky to last another 30, falling well short. America does not "pwn", it only thinks it does. So the networks do the next best thing and steal every good idea they see on foreign TV and remake it with American actors. It won Best Foreign Language Film and Benigni won Best Actor, but Shakespeare in Love won Best Picture that year.Hmm, I need to factcheck more I guess. I knew I remembered the goofy Italian guy walking on the seatbacks, but I thought it was for Best Picture for some reason. In other news, Shakespeare in Love was an excellent movie. One of the last really good movies that Ben Affleck was in, before he started making "Ben Affleck movies".

I found myself watching Paycheck (?) a few weeks ago because it was on, and it was pretty bad, but not that terrible. Changing Lanes was probably the last decent movie he did. The Sum of All Fears wasn't terrible either. But the rest...you can pretty much set on fire.

Balloon guy 158
Little Britain is a funny show I got hooked on when I was in London. But I often have to hit the subtitles because I can't follow what they are saying because of their Cockney accent. BBC channel is on my cable package.Monty Python is a go too show.Absolutely Fabulous is lameLawn Bowling is much better than I would have thought. The reason everyone else learns English is because they have too.America doesn't need to learn any language, so they don't. If we were surrounded by dozens of other countries that spoke different languages, there would be more emphasis on learning another language. Spanish is the only other languages encouraged in schools, but after you've been to Mexico a couple times, there isn't much reason to go back. And America is the best, ever. And we can kick any other countries butt with little or no interuption to our regularly scheduled programming.

Jerry_Lundegaard 0
I think its funny that the OP talks about not seeing non-american bands. If you think of true rock and roll bands that have reached "legend" status, most are not american. See: The Beatles, Rolling Stones, Led Zepplin. Can you name an American band that can match the overall status of those three?Recent bands: Franz Ferdinand, Arctic Monkeys. Why dont we see forien things in America? Because, as this thread shows, most of us are so ethocentric as to believe the rest of the world doesn't exist. I love America, and wouldnt want to live anywhere else, but were not perfect. We pwn in starting unnecessary wars and using far more resources than we should. You CAN get a cast real quickly here, as long as you have the money/insurance. We pwn at creating huge suburbs of identical tan houses. We pwn at strip malls. We pwn at starbucks, and other chains, which have spread like cancer to the rest of the world. If you tour Europe, and manage to find places that havent been Americanized, you might just find some interesting culture. Why dont you see more forien stuff? America doesnt want to see it. Pure and simple. Flame away, folks......
