Question About High Stakes Poker

Recommended Posts

Do any of you think (or know for sure) that the players on HSP were tipping the dealer after each hand? I would assume that since it was a "cash game", they would be tipping, and probably not showing it on camera. If so, how much do you think per hand? Just curious.

since it wasnt an actual casino im not sure, but IF they didthey really wouldnt care about if it was shown on TV or not and they generally tip after their session not after each hand

If you watch the show u can see them tipping after they win pots, I think it's either a 100 or 500 chip they were chucking to them. Also Jerry Buss tipped a waitress $500 for a drink in one of the first episodes! Would love to work that game!

FWIW - I was playing at a table with Linda Geenen, who often deals the Big Game at Bellagio, and she said that tips there range from nothing (more often than not) to maybe $5. But they're definitely not throwing black chips around to the dealers on a regular basis. High Stakes poker might be different, but I doubt it.

They have 5$ chips they tip with that are not in play. When they go all in you will notice chips left behind.
This is the right answer.

On more than one occasion, I'm almost positive I saw DN and others throw the dealer a pink chip after a really big hand. Pink chips were $500. I could be wrong, but I have DVR (like Tivo) and I rewinded a couple times to make sure I was seeing it right. Maybe he could clarify for us.

most dealers make more in tips on the 4/8 limit and 1/2 NL tables than they do dealing 4K/8K

Most likely it was to get change for the ante, that would be a pretty generous tip for someone who was stuck half a million

I wouldn't think that people playing those stakes are going to be worried about $500 whether they are down half a million or not. Just look at how Jerry Buss borrowed 50 grand from DN. He said yes without even thinking.

I'd loan Jerry Buss 50 grand in an instant if I had it. He's obviously good for it and likely to lose it back during the game, hopefully to me.

Seriously. This is the 100% correct answer. Nobody was tipping anything more. No Pinks or any other colored chips other than $5's went to the dealer.

You're correct that an extra $500 would be almost meaningless had they lost it in the game. But most of these guys are just as tight when it comes to tipping as the average joe at the 3/6 game. By that I mean they'll toke a $1 chip or two rather than a black $100 chip. If the money's being wagered or being used to buy something, they tend towards exorbitant. But that doesn't necessarily carry over into generosity at the tables.I'm not saying that pros are cheap. They just don't tip at the same percentage level that low-stakes players do (and probably rightfully so).Jerry Buss may be an exception. He also doesn't play cards for a living.

m guess is no because they got paid to show up so the dealers probaly were getting a good wage btw season 2 starts June 5.

the high limit players are notoriously bad tippers. DN is probably one of the better ones, but I still really doubt he's giving $500 tips every time he wins a big hand.loaning Jerry Buss money is completely different

Tipping a dealer 5 bucks after winning a 500,000 dollar pot is so lame. 100 is not a bad idea. It would be hard as a dealer to watch these players win/lose thousands, and only get $5 for dealing. Just a thought.

How many Pots got even close to 500,000? A handful of them got over 150,000. Also put this in perspective, the players are risking their money. The dealer isn't doing anything different than if they are dealing a 1/2 NL game than this game. So why does the dealer deserve a bigger tip?

I can see the point of the poster above, the cards are going to come out the same way regardless. The dealer is doing the job they are paid for, and when a player feels its appropriate they should receive a reasonable tip.

Tipping a dealer $5 after ANY size pot is huge!If a dealer in that game gets a $5 tip after each hand - he/she is going to make approx $200 an hour - for dealing cards.Thats a pretty decent wage dont you think? It's highly unlikely players would tip more than that no matter what the stakes are. These are pros and poker is their business. It is simple business sense to not be frivolous with their assests.

So they tell the casino that they will not pay a rake because it would cut into their profits ?

When my husband and I go to the local italian place, the tab is $50 and we leave $10 tip. When we go to a more elegant restaraunt, the bill is over $200. I would tip $40. You believe we should still leave $10 for a tip because the waiters "did the same job" as in the other place ?

I honestly believe restaruant tipping etiquette is far different than dealing poker tipping.

Well according to Gabe Kaplan and the producers of High Stakes Poker, DN actually won a few million dollar pots when he bet all in into a 40,000 pot. Anyone else hate that they would do that everytime someone would be all in and rake the pot uncontested?
