steve7stud 0
I was thinking about this earlier today. Is there anyone on FCP who just plays tournaments? Or even 90% tournaments to cash games. Please share....
HangukMiguk 8
That's the case for me for the most part. I was playing mostly SNG's and MTT's with a few cash games. I was just weak in cash games, and couldn't find anything that I could beat.I started playing a lot of Shorthanded limit, but it looks like I'm going to be switching to mostly Razz on FTP for now. Those games are just so beatable it's tasty.

HangukMiguk 8
How did just playing sng's and mtt's work out for you?Pretty rough. Not that it wasn't profitable. But still, playing your best poker and still only seeing a profit once out of every 10 or 20 times in a MTT, or once out of every 3 in a SNG is pretty frustrating when you know you could be winning them.I still wound up well in the black, but the swings just feel exaggerated when you see nothing happening for a while. JackArnal 0
I play MTTs almost exclusively. The onlu time I really play cash games or Sngs is when I need a change of pace. I feel more comfortable in tournaments. However, I am attempting to recreate myself as a dual threat soon.
Smokewagons 0
Up untill about a week ago I had been playing about 95% cash games, but I'm starting to play more MTTs and SNGs to see how that works. So far so good got 6th in a 15K guaranteed on UB the other night and the SNGs are decently profitable thus far. But I'll have to wait and see for a larger sample size

HangukMiguk 8
Yeah, I know I didn't have the sample size needed to truly prove that I was going to make a long term profit at it. I don't even remember the sample size now. But at least with SNG's, it looked like I would've had a long-term profit.
bleacherbum3 9
I know this is a small sample size, but for a while I just played SNG's. These were my stats from Party:Player statistics: Player bleacherbum0 Games played 73 Wins 41 (56.16%) Losses 32 (43.84%) Average Buy-In $6.16 Players with better winning percentage 63505 Players with worse winning percentage 1007620 $10 Table: 10 wins / 7 losses / 58.82% wins $5 Table: 31 wins / 25 losses / 55.36% wins Player: For best results, a Player should have 20 or more games played to get an ideaof their skill level. If so, here is how we suggest you analyze the data:Players Win Percentage 40% or higher Player is a Pro Players Win Percentage 35 to 40% Player is Very Good Players Win Percentage 30 to 35% Player is Slightly Above Average Players Win Percentage 25 to 30% Player is Slightly Below Average Players Win Percentage 20 to 25% Player is Below Average Players Win Percentage 10 to 20% Player is Way Below Average Players Win Percentage 0 to 10% Player is a Fish To qualify for a win, a Player must finish in the money, 1st, 2nd, or 3rd. Jdr999 0
I used to play 90% SNG's & MTT's, and ran good for a year, then went into aslide and lost 25% of all my earnings. Now it's 70% cash games, and 30% SNG's. Been over a month since I last played a MTT.

Vick12 0
I was thinking about this earlier today. Is there anyone on FCP who just plays tournaments? Or even 90% tournaments to cash games. Please share....Hey SteveI was playing a majority of mtt's and am just now starting to play cash games.I have had pretty decent success at mtt's and have the luxury of a full time job, so i don't "need" poker for income. I always like the tourney's because i have a background in coaching and love the fact their is a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow so to speak. I am just now learning that I am likely a decent cash game player, but hardly have enough hands logged to have any real idea what level cash game player I am.I do happen to like the 6 man SnG's. I have a pretty decent strat and my roi% over 130+ games at the $13 level was over 20%. The $38's have been running about the same.If i ever wanna TP/MM, you are definately the 1st guy I am calling for advice!!!
crocd99 0
my situation is kind of wierd... i use to just play cash games. however when i finished 7th in a 100k tourney i was hooked. i then started to dedicate myself to becoming a better tourney player because when you score big you really score big. but tourneys are very stressful you can go a long time with out a huge score which gets frustrating. so those of you who do play 90% of tournies how do you go about dealing with the long droughts with out a huge score.but for me while i am in school i play probably 70% tournies. but when i am not in school it chages to about 80% cash games.i think the reason is because i prefer to play live cash games. for some reason i feel more comfortable playing live cash games than playing online. the reason i play much more during the summer is because i like to play really long live sessions and because of classes i cant do that. so in the summer that is when i can. plus the drive to ac is about 2.5 hours and it is much easier when i dont have classes in the way. while in school i cant really log in the long sessions and i cant make it to ac as much. so that leaves me to playing online. and like i said before i dont really like playing cash online. so i play tournies there. and during school it is much easier to just log on and play a tourney than trying to find a good live game to play a long session in. JackArnal 0
How often do you play tournaments?I have played 300 in the last 11 months, including both MTT and SNG. I play mostly low buy-ins ( <= $50). I am looking to start slowly moving up into a few of the higher buy-in tournaies without killing my bankroll. Cash games just seem to give me fits. I have trouble walking away from cash games when I am losing. I seem to do much better with not signing up for another tournament when I am upset.
Flushgarden 0
but the swings just feel exaggerated when you see nothing happening for a while.exactly...I play 90% MTTs and SnGs. When you final table a MTT or you go on a great run in SnG's you feel so great. You feel invincable. Then after that I always hit a cold streak and can't make a dollar to save my life. The bankroll just goes down. You just have to keep reminding yourself to play correctly and you'll come out of it. I'm on a very cold run right now after being very hot last week and last weekend. I had a very bad beat at the final table of a MTT and I think maybe I was subconciously tilting for a few days after that. It seemed like every time I got AA or KK I knew it was going to be craked...and then it got cracked. I tried some ring games today as a change of pace...maybe get me out of my funk and get my bankroll going in the right direction again. I played right...got my money in as the favorite more times than not, but the donkeys got to me and I lost a couple buyins. At this point I'm thinking about taking a couple days off....After I play a couple MTTs tonight that is. lol
AAsnake88 0
I play MTTs at least 80%, and maybe even 90% of the time.Other than that I'll jump in a cash game if: 1) I don't have the 5-10 hours or so to play MTTs (I normally don't play if I'm not going to play that long)2) I come across a game with someone giving $$ away. anselm 0
I play tournaments about 98% of the time. I built my roll with SnGs but now play mostly MTTs. Variance has me really discouraged right now so I'm trying to get back into SnGs more regularly to sustain my income since poker is my job right now. The tourney droughts can be very tough to handle but I'm trying to keep afloat. In one of my favorite tournaments I money about 20-22% of the time and final table about 10-14%... I just wish I could cash 1 in 5 times instead of 5/5 then going 0/20.

gobears 0
I play 90%+ tournaments, almost exclusively MTTs. I used to be at 100% but have started to play some cash games (NLHE, PLO, O8). I always look for a MTT first and will play a ring game if I can't find an MTT.I like the idea of going for the big win - the adrenalin rush of winning an MTT can't be beat. I don't rely on Poker for an income, it's mainly a hobby so I don't mind the much bigger variances associated with tournaments.
MaltiMignun 0
I switched to primarily tourneys around May of last year after getting tired of the grind at 20-40 and 30-60.I still did on and off cash games for a few months, but now am exclusively a tourney player as I realizd I just enjoy it more and while the swings and periods of lull can be annoying, the payoffs of 'winning' are not only very profitable but much more exciting and rewarding (for me at least).Besides I hated some of the "teams" I spotted in my cash games and saw too many 'odd' things happen. While this happens in tourneys too, at least their edge is more limited.I had a pretty steady cash of about 8k/month playing primarily MTT only and won seats to 3 10k events (which I all crapped out in).I won my wsop 10k seat for this year and had my biggest cash to date last weekend in the Party 500k with a $36,000 score, so the time is finally paying off. It's definitely possible to be a successful exclusive tourney player, but all the problems mentioned in thsi thread are very realistic ones and you will suffer burnout and often curse "tourney poker" along the way. Before my big score last week, I bubbled 3 straight GSOP events on Full contact, which was quite annoying, including the Grand.Just gotta hang in there.
Wandigo 1
I'm probably 95% tournament player. When I take an occasional trip to the casino, I'll play 1/2 cash games, but other than that it's tournaments. I play in 2 live tourney's each week, and online I play the $10/$20 buy-in tourney's and $22 and $33 single-table SnG's. I seem to have much better results from the SnG's rather than cash. DLizzle 0
I should play all tournaments because I make a lot of money off them, but I don't because I like to mix it up. I'm a slightly profitable nl, limit and plo cash player because I tend to get a little over aggressive when I'm not paying enough attention. In tournaments I have proven over a few years to be very profitable.
