I remember when he used to come to our home games in Toronto. Back then he was about 270 pounds and wore shirts that were too small, and would always bring a bucket of spicy wings that he'd eat as he'd play. The grease would drip down the front of his shirt and all over the cards. And it gave him gas so bad we took to wearing surgical masks dipped in perfume.I remember he got mad one time when I rivered him on a bad beat. He took a bunch of chips and stuck them down his pants and did pelvic thrusts while singing the theme from Hawaii-5-0. Then he killed my cat and let the blood run over the cards.Oh wait, that wasn't Daniel, that was my neighbor Bud. And I never lived near Toronto. What was I thinking... silly me.So much for this being a great thread.

Yeah pretty much every single card club in Toronto you play at, you'll run into somebody that has claimed to have played with Daniel back in the day. The place Daniel used to play at called Funtime still has games running these days. The stories are usually all the same, Daniel was a re-buy machine who reloaded more than anyone else.

its "funDtime" and they dont have games running anymore.They went bye-bye like the rest of the charities. In fact, when there were permanent sites being offered - they received one. However, like anything else the government got their hands on - they messed it up.When Fundtime and the rest of roving charity casino's were closed, I like hundreds of others were left without jobs.

EVERYONE back then could see how good he was. I remember a friend named poker Paul when Daniel was leaving for Vegas for the first time simply saying to him - "it's about time"One of my favorite stories about Daniel which also gives an insite into his skills comes from a house game I had in my basement.The game was $10/$20 and daniel and this guy george had been butting heads all night.George was super agressive and loved playing.At one point in the evening they get heads up in a hand - 4 betting preflopI cant recall the board but the meat of what happened I cant forget.The flop was rags - george bets, daniel goes $20, George $30, daniel $40, george calls.On the turn - George checked, Daniel bet, George $40, Daniel $60, George $80, Daniel calls.At this point Daniel shows me his hand - he is holding 7 high. He says to me:"I am LEADING!....unless a 5 hits, I win this pot"Well, sure enough a 5 hits the river - Geroge bets, Daniel folds.George turns his hand over.Daniel was ahead with 7 high and got rivered by a 5.

LOL ... I'm sorry -- this is what makes the "pros" so special. I was at Caesar's during the Superbowl, and Daniel was there ... across the walkway at the high roller area about 20 feet away, watching the game, too. I'm not a big "picture with so-and-so guy, and I really didn't want to hassle him just to tell him I am a "fan", so I didn't approach him. But I will say it seems like he's a great guy. BTW, I'll be back to Vegas in June. Maybe I'll see him at the 1-2 tables.

I like a few others here (FCP Info) being one played with Daniel pretty much everyday back at Fundtime....Those were FUN times and FUNDTIME.....Whoever said Daniel was tight has no clue what they are talking about....I was probably one of the tightest players there and one day he really got me off my game....I three bet him with J3 of hearts...Now those that know me would know that I dont even put in a half a bet on the small blind with that hand....He was probably the only person around that could and did put me on tilt...even though it was for a brief moment....However my favourite Daniel story is the nite we all played in a single table tourney at JIMMY LONG HAIRs club...we got down to heads up...and i looked down and i see KINGS...make a raise he calls..FLOP comes JJ8......I push all in and he QUICKLY calls and i figure he has a JACK..well he had pocket 5s....and of course the 5 hit on the river....The great part of the story is what happened 5 minutes after the river....Probably not appropriate to share...Unless Daniel wants to share ...But it was really interesting...Serge

Fundtime was the most professional of the charity casino operators. What's probably happened is whoever they sold their chips to when they closed down is using the name for their undergroud club.

I read all the post and this seems to be a popular thread. I guess with everyone following DN's blog, it is actually interesting to hear people's own experience with him. It proves to show that DN is a"nice guy". I have no experience playing with him, but I did get his autograph on a pair of Aces at a Blue Jay game last year. I told him when I laid the cards down to sign that I was "ALL IN" jokingly.He responded by saying "I CALL". I was also at his Hard Rock party and he seemed genuinely friendly and accomodating.As for his recently blog about golfing and betting, it reinforces his gambling style. It sounds like Ivey and DN have made some BIG wagers with each other.You can just "TELL" who won that bet.As for poker in Toronto, I've heard there are games at a place calledTHE UNIT and also at the beaches. There are also your regular RHPT andPIRANA poker Tour as well. What ever happened to CHARITY CASINO"s??I think there are more people in need now, then ever before, would it not makesense to bring it back. Keeps kids off the street and actually have them think intellectually and mathematically in a figurative sense.All in all, I hope DN shares some of his experience. I would really like to knowwhat made him get into poker? Was is the charity casino's?? I wonder if he ever played at the CNE casinos. Were they not the major charity casino at the time?

Sorry to disappoint you but it is very true.As for $10/$20 being small - that was the maximum allowable limit in the charity casino's at the time and what was being played at most clubs.My house game followed suit and $10/$20 was what we played.The charity casino Fundtime was the home of what may have been the toughest $10/$20 game ever played on a regular basis.

First post! Ive been lurking since October 2004. Not much of a poster- could ya tell?I played with DN regularly not only at the Charity casinos, but at my home game in my kitchen. He was a superior player back then- even at 16 when he began playing in my home games, and a smart dominant player at the charity casino tables when he bacame of age. He played daily, and always had plenty of chips- rarely from rebuying. It was a good feeding ground for DN to hone his skills.We also played in a regular tournament in an underground poker room called the Raisin Room. It was a small buy in with rebuys for the first hour. My fondest memory was being at the table beside his, and in the first hand he goes all in without looking at his cards. At showdown he has like 8 high or something ugly like that and loses. He yells out: CHIPS ONE TIME FOR DANIEL!The record for rebuys was 12 or 13 prior to that night. Daniel rebought 38 times en route to winning the event that night. ( i think he won it)He was cocky as a teen, but friendly, and polite. I enjoyed playing with a player as poker savvy, and skilled as he was for his young age.I went to Vegas in December of 2005. I had emailed him to tell him i was coming into town, and said that i would look for him to come and say hi. I railed him on December 16th or 17th at the Belagio. When he saw me, he immediately came over and shook my hand and said hello. When the hand was completed that won him the Player of the Year, the cameras were flashing, the tv crews were all over the place and the place was buzzing. The first thing he did was come over to me, meet my girlfriend and pose for a picture with me for my son who is a big fan.The man was, is, and always will be a class act in my book.CHIPS ONE TIME FOR DANIEL!

Yes, I remember the hand. I was on a total bluff myself, but with all the action that went in my opponent had to be on a small straight draw. Based on the way he played the hand, I knew he didn't have top set. I knew he was trying to ram and jam with a drawing hand, and the drawing hand there was a 4-5 on a 2-3 board. My 7 high was good and I felt it. As long as it didn't come an A, 4, 5, or 6 I was paying him off with the 7 high.

My FCPHUL teammate, lindros88, used to play with Daniel and Evelyn but I'm not sure whether he'll post about it.He prefers being unknown which is why we don't refer to each other by our real names online.I'll check and see if he wants to throw in a story for the forum.

I used to pop into Fundtime after 8pm when the day shift, Daniel incuded left for the night. The 10-20 game was run on $5 time per half hour while most of the other Charity Casino were robbing us with max $10 rake per hand.I remember a particularly juicy game that had the likes of Daniel, Evan, Sam, James, Tyson, George, Jimmy Longhair, some Italian dude, Lucky Star Al, and myself. The game was run 11 handed back then and I was very proud of skipping an afternoon lecture to jump into this shark pond. Some background, back then Daniel used to be real serious about the game and would walk around with this big notebook. I had played with Daniel in very short sessions before as I was quite game selective and this group that played at Fundtime was probably the toughest in the GTA.It seemed to me back then that Daniel had lots of talent and love for the game but he was hyper aggressive. Maybe that was just the way he played against me. Almost everytime the action was on him he would bet or raise and hope that you'd drop out at some point.I picked up J9s in middle position. The action as I remember is UTG limps (Evan?), I raise, somebody cold calls, Daniel 3 bets in the cutoff. Blinds fold, Evan and all call.Flop is 5s 8d 9c. Evan checks, I bet, CC folds, Daniel raises, Evan folds. Hmm I just call as my 3bet is just going to get called or raised. Turn is a off Jack. I check, Daniel bets, I raise, he reraises, I 4 bet, he 5 bets. I call. River is a sweet sweet 9. I check, he bets, I check raise, Daniel then 3 bets, I four bet and Daniel has this sick look on his face and calls. My J9 takes down a monster. Pretty sure Daniel had 67, 55 or 88 there...maybe even 89. The funny part is when Daniel then proceeds to put some notes down in his book. I said jokingly, "I finally made it into your book huh?". He probably wrote something like, "This dude is such a fish"I really wish I had put in some more time back then with the already then Toronto legend. Now I only get to see him rushing from one corner of the Bellagio into Bobby's Room. Guess I'll just have to set up a golf game with Tyson and get Daniel to join us.
