Laptop - Seems Like A Great Deal?

Recommended Posts

it'll run physically hot, but that's just because of the fact that p4 chips that aren't pentium mobile (denoted PM or pentium 4M usually) generate a lot of heat when they run. it won't be a problem unless you actually sit the thing on your lap for a long timg, but it can be a pain (literally!) if you do.
LOL it's really bad, I know exactly what you're talking about. You don't really notice at first and then all of sudden there's a burning sensation. I've found the AMD Turion chipsets to run much cooler and I don't have the same overheating problem as I did with my old laptop.

There are many sweet deals on laptops right now. The latest greatest thing seems to be the duo processors. The way it's explained to me is it's almost like having 2 processors. Like someone else said slickdeals.net usually shows some great deals or coupons to use at Dell. Some people who want the best of the best try to get a dedicated video card. As far as Dell goes you need to get at least a Dell E1505 to be able to get that. It still doesn't automatically come with one you have to pay extra. This is the deal I have on the way from Dell right now that I got with a coupon from slickdeals.net :Order DetailQty Part # Description--- -------- --------------------------------------------- 1 222-1633 Dell E1405, Intel Core Processor Duo T2400 (2MB/1.83GHz/667MHz) 1 320-4697 14.1 Inch TrueLife Wide-screenWXGA+, for Inspiron 640M/E1405 1 311-5849 1GB, DDR2, 533MHz 2 Dimm for Inspiron 640M/E1405 1 320-4698 Intel Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator 950 GM, for Inspiron 640M/E1405 1 341-3212 60GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive for Inspiron 640M/E1405 1 420-5755 Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, English without Media, for Inspiron 1 420-4830 DELL SUPPORT 3.0 1 412-0689 Image Restore 1 420-4928 Windows Media Player 10 1 463-2282 Dell Owners Manual installed on your system, click on icon after system set-up to access 1 420-5460 Complimentary courses: Look for EU icon 1 420-5476 Dell Direct Download 1 420-5924 Icon Consolidation Application 1 430-1574 Integrated 10/100 Network Cardand Modem, for Inspiron 1 430-1048 Adobe Acrobat Reader 6.0, for Inspiron 1 465-2946 8X DVD+/-RW Drive for Inspiron640M/E1405 1 420-5784 Sonic Cineplayer 1 420-5790 Roxio Creator Basic/MyDVD Basic 1 313-4233 Integrated High Definition Audio, for Inspiron 1 430-1564 Dell Wireless 1390 802.11g Mini Card (54Mbps) for Inspiron 640M/E1405 1 420-5642 Trend Micro PC-cillin InternetSecurity, English, 90-day Trial 1 312-0412 53 WHr 6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery, for Inspiron 640M/E1405 1 420-3224 Broadband Icon for Inspiron 1 412-0687 NETZERO ISP 1 412-0787 AOL for Broadband 1 420-5256 Netscape ISP 1 412-0803 Corel WordPerfect 12 plus Trial of Quartro Pro and Presentations 1 950-3337 1 Year Limited Warranty 1 950-9057 No Warranty, Year 2 and 3 1 960-6910 Warranty Support,Initial Year 1 960-6890 Type 12- Mail-In Service, 24x7 Technical Support, Initial Year 1 983-2207 Thank You for buying Dell 1 464-5503 PC Restore Recovery System by Symantec 1 465-2809 Thank you for choosing Dell 1 412-0856 Paint Shop Pro Standard 1 412-0865 Basic digital Music,Photo and Game experience 1 465-0505 No Broadband Expresscard technology currently available 1 464-7492 Special Offer - $50 off (included in price) 1 463-6157 SQ Order Manage714.40

This one does NOT have a dedicated video card but I don't have a problem with that. You will need to get an E1505 to have a dedicated card as an option. The deal I got has expired. But these deals come around VERY often. go to www.slickdeals.net and then click on "forums" then click on "hot deals". That's where I got mine. I think I saw yesterday they had a sweet deal either on the e1705 or e1505.Here's onehttp://forums.slickdeals.net/showthread.ph...=12944&t=247125

if you buy a Dell or an Apple computer you can get a nice discount if you use the student discount. there is no way to check if a student is buying over the interenet so even Jerry can get a 15% discount on a laptop. :D
Whatever happened to Jerry anyway?? I heard he went for a walk .... :club:

I would just go with Dell... seriously... You can get one AT LEAST this good for 1300.
The processor in a Pentium 4 3.2Ghz HT extreme.
No it isnt. I am not aware of any laptop that has a P4 Extreme in it. If he told you it does, he's lying. What else is he lying about?Do NOT by a laptop with a P4. WAAY too hot (for your lap) and TERRIBLE battery life.
big problem - no warranty. its used.
Best case scenario when buying a used laptop is that only the battery is worn out. Laptops get carried around all the time and get beat up pretty easily. Even if the prev owner hasn't beat it up, you will. No warranty means no laptop soon enough. I don't buy extended warranties for anything, except laptops.
i appreciate your effort. it looks like that one is more like $1150 USD, which is more like $1500 CDN with tax and everything. still not bad. i'll take another look at the laptops section on dell.ca. i'm looking for something in the $800-1200 range, so maybe i can cut out an option or two.
check www.redflagdeals.com too
the guy also said he would include some excellent anti-virus software, and Windows XP Pro which should save me a couple hundred. true or false?
AVG = free antivirusWinXP Pro=$150+ CAD from www.ncix.comUnless you know him personally, the written guarantee is pretty worthless. In case I wasn't clear, I wouldn't recomend this laptop.

alright, you guys have definitely convinced me not to jump on this deal right away. I do know a computer expert where I'm going, so I'll ask him to come look at it with me. This laptop is supposedly somewhat custom and for expert use, so it may have weird things (like P4 extreme?) but I won't make any move until i get my expert buddy to thoroughly look at it.so now i'm moving on to dell.ca and using coupons. this involves making several decisions on attributes, so i'll put the ones i'm confused about here.1. Intel® Core™ Duo processor T2400 (2MB Cache/1.83GHz/667MHz FSB) - What do those numbers mean? What are the minimum requirements I should look for? What are some bad things I should look out for in the processor section (like "celeron")?2. 14.1" vs 15.4" for laptops. big difference? "TrueLife" - worth $25?3. For desktops, Analog vs Digital. Big difference?4. How can I tell if it has a dedicated videocard?5. 4-cell, 6-cell or 9-cell batteries. Big difference?6. Wireless routers. I'll be inside my apartment most of the time with a normal internet connection. Do I only need the wireless router if I'm going to be somewhere (like a library) with a wireless connection? Are there significant differences in quality for more expensive wireless routers?7. I thought extended warranties were rip-offs. Should I get one for a laptop?8. Are there cheap ways to get Microsoft office, or do I have to swallow the bullet for $150? Is Microsoft Works ($30) that much worse?Anything else? Thanks

1. Intel® Core™ Duo processor T2400 (2MB Cache/1.83GHz/667MHz FSB) - What do those numbers mean? What are the minimum requirements I should look for? What are some bad things I should look out for in the processor section (like "celeron")?Core Duo means that there are two physical CPU cores on the die - the latest craze, not super relevant yet but probably a good thing, esp if you do two things at once (ie: PT + a poker room). Cache is ondie memory, don't worry too much. 1.83GHz is the proc speed - you cannot by a proc that is too slow for basic usage, but more is always nicer. Don't be afraid to save some $$ by buying a proc that is a few steps down from the fastest, you won't notice a differance and will save much $$$. If buying a laptop, I would recommend either a Centrino platform or Centrino Duo. Avoid celeron, pentium4, mobileP4, and most AMD chips, although I have heard some good things about the latest AMD mobile platform. Desktop go AMD all the way.2. 14.1" vs 15.4" for laptops. big difference? "TrueLife" - worth $25?Which is more important, screen size and resolution, or portability? I'd go for the biggest screen & highest resolution you can, esp if you have good eyesight. TrueLife = shinier finish; better in darker rooms, painful if used in the sun. 3. For desktops, Analog vs Digital. Big difference? For LCD screens, I assume? Digital is better. Avoid analog LCD screens.4. How can I tell if it has a dedicated videocard? If you aren't playing games (3D shooter types) this doesn't matter. If you are, look for NVidia or ATI branded video specs, likely means dedicated video (but not guaranteed). Even if you aren't, make sure (in a desktop) that you will have PCIe slots so you can install a videocard later if you want. Don't worry too much about the video if you are buying a laptop; they aren't ideal for 3D games for many reasons, the video card being only one. If you want to play 3D games, buy a desktop.5. 4-cell, 6-cell or 9-cell batteries. Big difference?Probably not. Bigger batteries mean more life and more weight. I just bought a second battery instead of upgrading the one.6. Wireless routers. I'll be inside my apartment most of the time with a normal internet connection. Do I only need the wireless router if I'm going to be somewhere (like a library) with a wireless connection? Are there significant differences in quality for more expensive wireless routers?Wireless routers TRANSMIT the signal, you don't need one to go to the library, they would have the transmitter for you to log onto. Make sure your laptop has a 802.11b/g wireless CARD (receiver). If you go Centrino, you'll get an Intel one; mine works fine. You will probably eventually want to get a wireless router for your apartment; a laptop BEGS to be used on the couch, on the toilet, on the balcony....7. I thought extended warranties were rip-offs. Should I get one for a laptop? They are, but get one for the laptop. If you drop it and break it, you get a new one. I'm too careful with most things to want to spend $$ on a warranty, but the laptop is vulnerable.8. Are there cheap ways to get Microsoft office, or do I have to swallow the bullet for $150? Is Microsoft Works ($30) that much worse? Are you still a student, or still know one? MS Office is available at a discount. Check your University bookstore. MS Works doesnt. You can use other suites like WordPerfect suite or OpenOffice or StarOffice, but you then aren't using "The Standard". IMHO Office is worth it.

In Canada, this is sold as the Inspiron 630m. The updated version of the 600m, which I what I have. Probably a good pick.

i don't see the 600m at dell.ca. i see the 640m - is that a good base model? seems a bit expensive. i'm looking at the 6400 as well.i have a few coupons though - when i try to apply them though it doesn't go. says i have to "check details" then just says "dell recommends XP Professional," though even when i change it to that it doesn't attach. help?

I've never heard of that b4. Usually when it says "check details" you have a system that you aren't able to use the coupon on.

yeah these coupons are a real *****. this one is "for all Inspirons" - then i try it on an Inspiron and... nada.quick question:Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 630 w/HT Technology (3.0GHz,800FSB) VSPentium® D Processor 820 with Dual Core Technology (2.80GHz, 800FSB- same price.yeah, i'm looking at desktops now. laptops look like it'll be at least 1200, whereas i think i can get what i need in a desktop for less than that.and:80GB Serial ATA Hard Drive VSDataSafe 80GB (Includes main hard drive plus a hidden reserve hard drive) - is DataSafe worth any extra $?

Dual core is supposed to be better. But that's just what I read on various sites.

i forgot to mention i'm using dell.ca because i'm in Canada. is this from there, or the US? I've been told buying from the US is risky because it'll almost certainly get hung up in customs. can anyone verify/contradict that?i don't even see the E510 on dell.ca - am i missing something?i checked out the ebay coupons - seems like only for americans.thanks for the effort nicksdad and Ouch

I just ordered a Dell using the slickdeals.net coupons. To get the $750 coupon I think it has to be over $2000. I ordered the 1705 with the 17 inch screen with the true life and a few other upgrades. Got it up to a little over $2000 and then used the coupons. So for $1165 I got all the good stuff (you can tell I'm a computer wizz right? :club: ) and will now be able to get pokertracker and 4 table with no overlap. My Fulltilt account is taking a shot to pay for this but hopefully playing for tables it won't take me to long to win it back. I've been playing 3 on a 12 inch monitor and its just been a pain in the *** with tons of overlap and to many misclicks. Thanks again to Nicksdad1970 who sent me a bunch of PM's and answered all my dumb questions while I was buying it. You da man. :D

if you don't need portability, don't buy a laptop.buy the HD and LCD monitor elsewhere for less. HD is easy enough to install yourself. 80gigs extra for $50 is not a good deal. Dell LCDs have a good rep (highend ones at least) but you can get a 19" LCD for $350 easily enough.
