Laptop - Seems Like A Great Deal?

Recommended Posts

I've been offered this laptop for $1300 CDN (about $1200 US). its a private sale, so no taxes or shipping. I was told it was originally $3600 USD, and that there is nothing wrong with it:http://www.sagernotebook.com/pages/noteboo...lectedType=5690from the little i know about specs, it seems like a really great deal, and that its a pretty damn good computer.1 - is it as good as it seems? is $1300 a pretty great price?2 - what type of questions should i ask about either specifications that aren't listed, or about if/how its working?thanks, daniel

looks like a good one to me, but a p4 will probably run pretty hot on your lap. i've never heard of the brand, though--you might want to google around for a review or two.

Found a couple for $2000 so it looks like a good deal. What are you using it for? There are much better laptops that are cheaper. Just curious.

i will look around for reviews. what do you mean about running hot on your lap? is that a big problem? can it be fixed?

i'm using it for mainly internet poker. its more than i need, but only an extra hundred or two once you include shipping and taxes and seems like i'm getting a helluva lot more. used though.
Does it say how much RAM and HD? I see options on one of the tabs, but not how much of each you'd actually be getting.
it says 512 MG of RAM included - didn't notice the HD part. i think it said 60 or 80, but i'll check the ad, thanks.appreciate the assistance folks.

Looked like it gave 3 options, like you'd have to pick. That's why I don't see how it has a price but not set specs.I would just go with Dell... seriously... You can get one AT LEAST this good for 1300.EDIT: My girlfriend recently got an XPS laptop for under $1100. Pretty well equipped. You need a little bit of a deal, but don't get some no-name for $1300.

I've used Sager's.They are good and if you need any help you can call them up and talk to a real person.

Also... XPS has their own support line that is very good. You have a special code for your computer. Hoosier used it recently and said they were awesome.

The thing is, you can go to costco and get a "better than you need" laptop for around $800. Sure it's "only" a couple hundred more , but you could spend that extra couple hundred on strippers instead of computer upgrades you don't need. Dude. Think about it... Strippers!!

Hell you can get a new Dell Inspirion B120 for $499 and have no problem running any poker site out there. I have a Mac laptop and a Mac desktop at home and will be buying one of these soon cause it is cheap and will fulfill my needs for internet poker.

I've grown to like AMD processors and have found them to be much more reliable than the Pentium chips. They run more stable and do not heat up as much either.I don't like laptops much overall though, I'd only get one if I really needed something portable to go with me very often for school and etc. At least with my experience with laptops, they eventually breakdown at some point whether it be physically or internally and they are a major hassle to fix, trust me on that. It's just not as reliable as a desktop. Having said that I still own one :club:, but don't use it all that often.

if you buy a Dell or an Apple computer you can get a nice discount if you use the student discount. there is no way to check if a student is buying over the interenet so even Jerry can get a 15% discount on a laptop. :club:

You've left out the most important spec - the warranty. It's a laptop, so generally if something goes wrong with it, you're not going to be able to plug in a replacement part you bought down @ the neighbourhood PC store. As for the price, it's a little high - unless you're looking at a model with the 2GB Ram, 80 GB HD, 3.0+ GHz processor, 1600x1200 (this is the most important for you multi-tablers!) options.Bottom line - if you're not getting a full 1/3 labour/parts warranty, then stay away from this. Even with the warranty, you can probably find a comparable system that's cheaper.ps: No widescreen? Ghett-o.

If the deal is too good, it's probably stolen.I'd rather not buy from some sketchy guy, personally. But if sketchy purchases is your thing, i can refer you to someone who has even better deals on high end laptops.

Yeah... they had 10 days of deals recently, and just had to wait for the right day.I forget what discount she got, but a couple free upgrades and probably a couple hundred off. She mainly did it cause if she signed up for the Dell Premium thingy she got 0% financing.

Replied to a computer thread last night but I think it was late and no one else replied. This is the computer I'm saving for. it has 1920 X1200 pixels which I've been told is enough for 4 tables with no overlap. I want to get pretty much just a kick *** laptop for poker. Just have to win a few hundred more and I'm getting it. Anyone reccommend anything other than this. Its $1390 or so once you upgrade the monitor. Looking for one of you computer wizzes to tell me this is the way to go. thanks.http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/con...=E1705SP1&s=dhs

EDIT: It might be impossible to read. I'll clean it up.

Does it say how much RAM and HD? I see options on one of the tabs, but not how much of each you'd actually be getting.
in the most recent email:It has 768MB of ram, 256 of which I have allocated to the video card (an ATI 9700 pro M10), but that can bechanged easily in the bios to any amount. It has a 60gb hard drive, and anempty bay for a secondary one. The processor in a Pentium 4 3.2Ghz HT extreme.
I've used Sager's.They are good and if you need any help you can call them up and talk to a real person.

this is probably "better than i need," though some things, like better processor, bigger monitor will be useful. my thinking is that an extra couple hundred now might mean i can wait an extra year or two before buying my next one. since this one is already a year or two older than what i might otherwise get, is this faulty reasoning?

big problem - no warranty. its used. he's said he's willing to discuss some sort of full refund if it stops working in the near future, but that'd be hard to enforce. the max. resolution is something extremely high (higher than 1600*1200) since he used it for gaming aswell, but anything bigger than that is just bonus and not that useful.

i appreciate your effort. it looks like that one is more like $1150 USD, which is more like $1500 CDN with tax and everything. still not bad. i'll take another look at the laptops section on dell.ca. i'm looking for something in the $800-1200 range, so maybe i can cut out an option or two.the guy also said he would include some excellent anti-virus software, and Windows XP Pro which should save me a couple hundred. true or false?i appreciate all the help guys. maybe i'll see if he'll knock a couple hundred off the price, or at least give me some sort of written guarantee.thanks, daniel

Some kind of warranty for a laptop is a must preferably a service plan that you'd get from somewhere like Best Buy. It's almost a guarantee that you'll find something wrong with it after using it about a year or so. Laptops are extremely fragile because the parts are outsourced. That's the reason for the drop in prices for laptops these days, they're not very well made. However, it's kind of a lose lose situation with these service plans and warranties. It's a guarantee that you won't be able to use your laptop for a while, because it will take a long time for it to be fixed. But if you don't have coverage for it, then it will cost you a ton of money to get it fixed from elsewhere. It's kind of pick your own poison I guess, which is why I don't like laptops in the first place.

it'll run physically hot, but that's just because of the fact that p4 chips that aren't pentium mobile (denoted PM or pentium 4M usually) generate a lot of heat when they run. it won't be a problem unless you actually sit the thing on your lap for a long timg, but it can be a pain (literally!) if you do.
