I tried to search this, but couldn't find what I was looking for. I heard the ME will be capped at 8,000 people. Is this true?
I don't think that Harras would cap the ME. they turned it into a 2 week event for christs sake.

The Main Event is scheduled in four "first day" flights beginning on July 28th; each of those four flights will play down from 2,000 to 800 players on their respective first days. Eight thousand players is the designed maximum number of entries to the Main Event, if there are fewer entries the four flights will be balanced as closely as possible. Players are being allowed to select their starting day among the four flights, as long as spots are open. All levels will be 100 minutes and if time demands there may not be a dinner break for the "first day" flights. After the first four days/flights, there will be a combining and Flights #1 & #2 will play down from 1600 to 700 and Flights #3 & #4 will do the same the next day. Then there is a scheduled day off for the Main Event on Thursday August 3rd. Thus ends week one of the Main Event. All players will have played only two days at this point. Week One of the Main Event will not be the grind it has been in the past but then starts the real test: Seven straight days of poker. On Day One of Week Two, the remaining 1400 players sit down and play until only 600 remain (Did I just say only six hundred?). Day Two the 600 become 300; Day Three its down to 150; Day Four from 150 to 60. Day Five might be a reasonably short day going from 60 to 27 but remember that there could be as many as Eighty Million chips in play, which means that with 60 players remaining the average stack would be 1.33 million; it's just a guessing game to figure out where the blinds might be after 11 days of play. Day Six of Week Two is a normal 27 down to 9 for the Final Table and then on August 10th, the event moves to the new poker room at Caesar's for the Main Event Final Table.

There is also a day off between the Day 1's and Day 2's. I think Harrah's only reason to have a day off here is give them the possibility to add a 5th Day 1. They can also get around 2200 per day if you include the overflow list which are the people who start after someone busts out.So the cap will be somewhere around 2,200 x 5 = 11,000.

I agree with this.
So the cap will be somewhere around 2,200 x 5 = 11,000.
But not this... they will find another casino to take overflow, aka Caesar's. The bigger the tournament gets, the better it is for them. They will find a way to never cap it.

I can totaly see that happening. They didn't build that poker room for nothing.

It would be so hard for Harrah's and the players to go to Caesar's to play in one of the opening day events. If they did go over 8,000 people, which I highly doubt, they would likely have a 5th day 1.

If I remember correctly (keep in mind my brain is old and addled) the Nevada Gaming Comm told them last year they could not limit the number of entries. I could be wrong about this, and if I am someone will surely correct me.

I don't know it would be tough for some because the side games would be so juicy. Say you are on the first day one. You make it through now you have four more days till the next day. Now you are going to be immersed in the cash games (at least I would). then after that you gotta focus back on tournament play. I tell ya this event is going to determine the best player in the world...SW on the last part for those that don't know...it means Sarcasm Warning

If you have to explain it, it takes the fun out.

i think 8k is just what they estimate the size of the field to be. i remember reading somewhere last year that since this an open event nevada gaming rules dont allow harrahs to cap the field at any size as long as you show up before seat sale end with 10k they have to let you enter. i dont think they have to worry though because i say about 7k is the number they will get.

The only way they can limit the field is by raising the buy in.Mo' money, mo' money.
Yes, but that won't translate in more $.Most of the seats won into the Main Event are Satellites. If you raise the buy-in, you indirectly raise the satellite buy-in, which will mean less players. It would be very hard to limit the field while still keeping the large prize-pool.

  • 4 weeks later...
according to Card Player Harrahs has capped it at 9k.http://www.cardplayer.com/goto the bottom right and there is a poll with said info.
You all are kind of correct. From http://www.cardplayer.com/barry-blog/?id=1...1774d28dc6818fbWSOP Rumors By Barry Shulman, Card Player Chairman - 2006-05-27 It is all over the poker community and the Internet that Harrah's has capped the number of players for the 2006 Championship at 8,000. That is wrong! Admittedly, even Card Player reported it wrong.I personally confirmed with Jeffery Pollack, WSOP Commisioner, that not only is it not capped at 8,000, but they already have accommodations for at least 9,000. Furthermore if demand dictates, they will try to expand even And I'll see the rest of you in hell. Good day.
