Great "unknown" Musicians

Recommended Posts

Danny GattonThis guy is probably the best guitarist you've never heard of. He absolutely rips it up, great flair for melody and an exceptional technician. He was once voted "Best Unknown" by Guitar Magazine. He has a couple of albums out, of which 88 Elmira Street is an absolute gem. A variety of styles, a couple of cool covers and an unbelievable display of guitar wizardry. He, unfortunately, commited suicide in 1994, but not before I saw him at a free show during the Montreal Jazz Fest the year before he died.If you love amazing R+B and blues guitar, go get 88 Elmira Street. You won't regret it.Konichiwa, bitches.

Jaco Pastorius and Stuart Hamm. The best things to ever happen to the electric bass guitar.
I know some Jaco stuff from his Weather Report days. He died an unfortunate, substance related death, did he not? Big loss for the music community.Stuart Hamm, I know him not.

Yes, Jaco had a history of drug abuse and bipolar issues, but they didn't kill him. Some psychotic club owner beat him into a coma, causing irreversable brain damage. They eventually pulled the plug after it was clear he wasn't ever going to come out of it. Stu Hamm is Joe Satriani's bassist of choice, absolutely amazing musician. He's toured with G3 quite a few times. You can check out some of his stuff here:http://fios.stuarthamm.net:8080/listen.php3*Note on the Mp3's, if you click the top one, there's some amazing solo work in there, but it's from the middle on. The intro stuff is only impressive if you play bass and know how hard it is to actually play*

88 Elmira Street is my 13th favorite album of all-time. (I pulled number out of my ***, but it's a sweet record.)

He's simply amazing, I'm no slouch on the bass (though I'm a tremendous slouch in other areas) and I almost put myself in traction trying to pull some of his chops off. Re-listening to the Paris Solo right now...goddamn he's good. Here you go, check this shizz out. It's even more incredible when you can see with your own eyes that all that sound is coming from one instrument and one guy...http://www.youtube.com/w/Stu-Hamm?v=PSaJMq...&page=1&t=t&f=b

I've got the Friday Night in San Francisco disk w/ Al Dimeola, John McLaughlin and Paco DeLucia. Sick disk. Which reminds me--i should break that out tonight for another listen....Check out Charlie Hunter----plays an 8-string---and actually plays bass and guitar at the same time. He is unbelievable to watch.

I wanted to say John Petrucci, but I didn't think he was unknown enough. In any case, if you haven't listened to Dream Theater's entire discography then you are missing out.

Victor Wooten? not sure. haha me and my buddies often blast Bela Fleck while cruising downtown as if it was some hardcore rap. funny stuff.Cale was a good friend of a good friend of mine's father.i know i know i'm amazing.i was within like 5 minutes of meeting him though. i went over to his house one day and saw a car pulling away. i asked who left and he goes "a friend of my dad's, JJ Kyle or something.I ask if its JJ Cale, and the dad comes over and talks to me for like 30 minutes (I was 12).apparently my buddy got to meet the Guess Who and others. while i stayed home seething in jealousy:not over it face:alright, i need some content.i know its not unknown, but rick wakeman is amazing:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ya6dsej-0I
