Please Stop Explaining The "rules To No Limit Texas Hold 'em"...

Recommended Posts

C'mon! Do they have to explain the rules of NLHE on EVERY SINGLE POKER SHOW ON TV????Poker is the 2nd most televised "sport" on TV. If somebody doesn't know the rules by now, then that's NOT your target audience. What if every time you tuned in to watch a football or baseball game, they explained the rules to you? How long do you think before the fans got fed up and bombarded the network with complaints?Just a rant. I get sick to my stomach every time I have to sit through that pointless introduction on the WPT, HSP, Poker Superstars, World Series of Poker, Ultimate Poker Challenge, Calvin Ayer's Wildcard Poker, Heartland Poker Tour, Speed Poker Championship, U.S. Poker Championships, etc...If viewers didn't know how to play poker, would all of these shows really be on the air????

It doesn't last that long, plus some people could be watching for the first time and even in other sports you hear the announcers explaining stuff that everyone should already know. I'm not saying any names ::cough:: John Madden ::cough:: " You know if he gets past the goal line here then its a touchdown" :club:

Yeah, and in poker the announcers say things like "If he doesn't get a T, A or Q, he'll be out in 6th place."That's okay. Explaining things during the action is fine. Stopping the action to explain the most basic hand rankings and what a flop is a turn and a river and what a "blind" is is another matter.I just think that by now, everyone knows this and new viewers could pick it up pretty easily.

Don't be elitist. Some people do have lives outside of TV and if they happen to stumble on a poker show and get interested....then give them 30 seconds to learn the rules of the game. It's not like they give a 5 minute strategy lesson every show. Just relax, if you are really bothered by this, remember to go get a beer everytime they start the rules....everything is better with a little beer or liquor.

Even more annoying is any show on Fox Sports that has Chris Rose as one of the hosts. Every damn time they go through the hand rankings, for some reason he has to whine about never seing a royal flush. EVERY time! Can someone let him know that it is the strongest/most uncommon hand for a reason?

I concur. I remember hockey on Fox trying to explain things outside of the play(coming in from commercials) and it was just as annoying. Wait for a situation to come up and explain. Always easy to flip the hand rankings up when a play comes where one is drawing for a straight and the other a flush.2 cents.

This "rant" is just plain silly. Get over it.

He sorta does have a point about how other sports don't show the rules all the time. But not enough to warrant this.

You do realize it lasts all of about a minute, right? Go the kitchen and get a snack. Take a leak. Check your email. Or just ignore them. It's not really that difficult.

I have ignored them... about 50,000 times actually. Now, they're getting disgustingly OLD. I can't believe that nobody else is just plain sick of them.If they must explain the game, can't they do it during the action? We don't get to see enough of the play anyway. They cut it down to just a few hands of the actual play as it is.

It seems like I'm in the minority, but I agree with the OP completely. Poker's been in the mainstream plenty long enough that it really shouldn't be necessary at this point. And they don't have a special rules segment for any other televised sport. Hell, I watched a lot of curling during the olympics and had to figure it out as the match went along. I don't see why poker should be different. At this point, enough people should know the basics, and those that don't shouldn't have that hard a time figuring it out. Granted, it'd boil down to maybe one more hand shown or some little vignette nobody gives a crap about, but I think it's time the producers let it go.

The WSOP also stopped rules introductions in 2005. Except for non-Holdem games...which I wish they'd show more of....grrrrrrrrrrrrr

Anyone who doesn't know the hand rankings, you want involved in Poker - even if its dropping $75 at the local casino for 30 minutes of "fun"... Relax, get off the couch for the whole minute (???) that it's on, and remember:"A little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing".

I think you spent more time on this rant then the last 5 poker shoes spent on rules combined.
hmmmm. Silly poster, they don't use shoes in poker. You're thinking of Blackjack!
