mellinac 0
The US only makes $100 bills, no bigger. Why dont they make 1k bills? The way I figure it, inflation has made the 100 small and somewhat meaningless. Any idea why the treasury can't make a larger bill?
GWCGWC 83
I would like to have the problem of thinking the 100 bill is meaningless.but by all means, print up some 1K bills

erac22 0
They used to.Check it out...http://www.friesian.com/notes.htm I'm pretty sure there are 1000 dollar notes, but they're only used in government transactions. Or maybe i heard that in a movie. Not sure...
mellinac 0
Thanks for the site. It's funny how Binions has the largest collections of 10k bills. Obviously casinos have a need for large bills. Not only do players want to carry less paper that has more value, but if a player only has a K note, he's more likely to bet it. This means more gamble per player for casinos and more of a high roller feel for the everyday gambler.

Any idea why the treasury can't make a larger bill?I dunno about America but I know Canada had 1000 dollar bills and has pulled them out because they were favourite's of money launderers. As it were we probably traded them straight up for American hundreds. FWIW

The way I figure it, inflation has made the 100 small and somewhat meaningless. Any idea why the treasury can't make a larger bill?Large bills were eliminated so it would be harder for large cash transactions to be made (drug deals, illegal gambling, money laundering. ect....) It also makes it much harder for a terrorist or foreign government to damage the economy with counterfeit bills. In today's age of electronic money I doubt if there will ever be a larger bill. I think they should do away with pennies and nickels and just round everything to the nearest 1/10 of a dollar.

ajs510 122
In the past there were $500, $1000, $10,000, and $100,000 bills, but the largest bills were only used in transactions between banks and federal reserves. I think we'll go the opposite direction and eventually phase currency out completely. Debit cards and new technology based on electronic currency is the way of the future. I'd say it's a fair bet that within the next 20 years (probably sooner) you'll see an upheaval in the American banking system similar to the US coming off the gold standard. There will be a 1 year grace period to convert all paper and coin currency to electronic funds, and then it will all be E-money.

ROGUE06 0
I agree, pennies should be done away with. I think I remember seeing a $500 or $1000 bill at a bank once. Pretty sure Grover Cleveland was on one of them and Madison on another.

I read the article that someone posted earlier, blew my mind that paper and coin money is actually unconstitutional. I had never heard that before, I guess my plan for e-money will take an act of Congress (not that it wouldn't have anyway).

Seems odd.Plus everyone hates them.Nickels can come too.

oldirtyharry 0
The copper in pre-1980 pennies is worth more than a penny.Really? I wonder if it would be worth it to try and collect a few thousand and melt them into some pipes or bricks or something. Similarly, I wonder if it would be worth it to drink a few thousand beers and drive out to Michigan to return the cans.
