Max # Of Bets On Betting Streets

Recommended Posts

Poker rooms in Nevada allow five total bets on each betting street (one bet and four raises) for all limit games. Other places around the country only allow four total bets (one bet and three raises) on each betting street for limit games. Can anyone make a case for why one might be better over the other? If you were setting the rules at a poker room, which policy would you choose and why?

At the local harrahs in missouri its 5 bets or a bet and 4 raises(for the nits).Id choose the one that would increase the potential rake to the maximum amount.

4-bet max is what I'd have if I was fortunate enough to own a casino in my hometown. It keeps more players alive for a longer period and therefore more rake. Usually the max. rake will be hit on both the 4-bet or 5-bet cap. It's like the max. buy-in rule for NL games. The casinos don't care about the players' well being. The caps are there to ensure there will be enough players alive to continue to rake throughout the day.Less betting means more hands. More hands means more rake.

Interesting point. What if, however, you were playing in a 20-40 timed game (or time-pot game) and there were no rake implications. Would your opinion change?

I'm not quite sure I understand...are you referring to session fees as opposed to rake?...if so...no, my opinion wouldn't change. My previous reasons still hold. But please explain the time-pot you mention...I don't think I've ever heard of that.

most higher limit games pay by the half hour instead of rake

The harrah's I frequent allow four bets pre and post flop, and unlimited raises on turn and river, at least at the 3/6 and 4/8 kill I've played there. BTW...loooooove it. Make the nuts sooo much more profitable, since there's a seemingly never ending stream of donks that can't read a board to save their lives.--edit That used to be the case when the first started offering poker there, the game has become a bit more savvy since then, now it's a few "in the know" guys competing for fish chips.

Some casinos also remove a cap for any heads up action. One poor fella donk'd off his entire stack 8$ at a time holding the 2nd flush only to find the nut flush. Fun fun.

Yeah my first trip to the casino playing 3/6 I flopped quad 3's vs. JJ. He wanted to move all in at the river but the dealer said no, so we just kept re-raising til he was all in. 6 at a time, and I was hooked on poker...

Most places in california are 4 bets max, but some places allow unlimited raises heads up. I took over $100 off a guy in $4 $8 on the river with a straight flush against his nut flush. It was fun.

I do not understand how poeple can keep raising when there are possible hands that beat them. I guess that is why this game is profitable though. I just cannot get the mentality they have though. "I can't fold this hand because it is a monster, even though there are bigger monsters possible, and he is raising me non-spto, I must have the best hand." Makes no sense.
