budfox427 0
Andrew Feldman: Welcome to the Bluff/ESPN Chat of the week! Today's guest will be Daniel Negreanu! Send in your questions now and Daniel will answer them when he gets here! Daniel Negreanu: Hello everybody. I'm about to get started. Right now I'm just looking over all the questions and will get underway in a minute or two --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Chuck B Woodbridge, VA: How tough was it to watch yourself lose 750k on TV in the big cash game? My fragile ego would have been damaged beyone repair. Also, what percentage of your bank roll was in play? Thanks Kid. Daniel Negreanu: I actually felt pretty good about it. I know that might sound insane, but after watching the show I saw that my my reads were dead on, and I just ran unlucky. You can't focus on luck, just on making good decisions. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Tony (MInneapolis, MN): At what point will poker stop becoming a passion for you? I've heard you view it as a job....how long before you burn out? Daniel Negreanu: Poker is my passion and it always will be, Sure, I do more things outside of poker now also, but I'll always be a die hard poker player at the core. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Jeff, Smackover, Ark.: Do your sponsors play any part in deciding which tournaments you play or is that strictly your call? Daniel Negreanu: No, not at all. One of the great things about being a poker player is that you are your own boss. I put up my own money to play in the tournaments. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Sarah, Fremont, Nebraska: What are your thoughts on the new $50,000 HORSE event at this year's WSOP and besides yourself, who do you think the top two or three favorites are for this event? Daniel Negreanu: This might be one of the most important changes the WSOP in quite sometime. It's becoming too Hold'em oriented, and this event will help to make sure that the other games don't die. As for favorites, you have to think Phil Ivey, maybe Chip Reese, Ted Forrest... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Derek Regina, SASK: Do you feel poker players shouldnt be judged for their actions at the poker table (ie making rude comments/arguing) kinda how hockey players arn't judged for fighting. I guess what im saying...is it just part of the game (a way to get a mental advantage) or are players like Hellmuth just disrespectful? Daniel Negreanu: Yes, I think professional poker players should be kept to a higher standard. The game has come along way and it's important that we protect the image of the game before it becomes the WWE. I'm ok with what Matusow and Hellmuth do, but when they pick on amateurs I don't condone that at all. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------MPLS, MN: What are the best sites to play online for real money? Thanks Daniel Negreanu: Well, the only site I play on is www.fullcontactpoker.com. I regularly playing limit hold'em as high as $500-$1000 on there. There is also a cool promotion called the Daniel Negreanu Protege. Kind of like Trump and the Apprentice --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Columbus, Ohio: Daniel, are there tips that you keep to yourself or are you willing to reveal your full arsenal when asked? Daniel Negreanu: Pretty much. There is a big difference between knowledge and execution. I could tell you everything I know, but that doesn't mean you'll be able to do it, or recognize when the time is right. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Paul Coentry, RI: Do you think that your many outside intrests/investments, and the outside intrests/investments of other top players has hurt their/your skill set? I know at one point you pointed this out to Helmuth, do you see it happening to you? Daniel Negreanu: I think that most definitely it can be a concern if you let it. For me, poker is first and foremost, having said that, I know that if I played more poker it would help improve my overall game. Thing is, I also enjoy doing other things too. For example, just today I was doing a voice over for a new poker movie coming out called Lucky You. That was pretty cool. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Derrick (Austin, TX): Hi Daniel, I think you're one the most brilliant players in the game right now and you're definately a role model of mine...quick question, in your opinion is is possible to make a reasonable living playing $1/$2 games while living in Vegas, at least until I have the bank roll to step it up? Daniel Negreanu: Frankly, it's tough. Unless you plan on living a very meager lifestyle $1-$2 limits are not enough to pay the bills. However, if you play multiple $1-$2 games online you can build a bankroll in a hurry. Phil Ivey agrees with me that if he started out today, he would build his bankroll playing exclusively online. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Josh (Milwaukee, WI): How many events do you typically play each year at the WSOP? Which games and what buy-ins do you usually play? Daniel Negreanu: Well, in order to win Player of the Year you have to play a lot of events. So, my mother packs me a lunch everyday and I go to "work" everyday, playing virtually all the events. Of course, when you make a final table you have to skip events, but that's a nice problem to have! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Tim, Boston MA: Daniel, describe your style for early stages of tournaments when the blinds are fairly small, and how it differs when the blinds have increased and there are antes in play. Daniel Negreanu: There are two schools of thought on this: old school and new school. I'm totally new school. In the early stages the stacks are deep so you get a lot of implied odds to hit some funky hands. Plus, most of the bad players are gone by day three so if you don't get their chips somebody else will. I like to play a lot of hands with the bad players early. Then at the later stages, your focus needs to become more intense, and your play should be a little less sloppy. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Rusty Heyman (Simi Valley, CA): Daniel, You love to talk to people while you are at the table. I have started to do this more and more with my poker game with much success. What are some of your favorite things to say or tricks that you employ when you talk to people to get the most information out of them? Thanks, Rusty Daniel Negreanu: The key thing that you want to think about is making them feel comfortable. If they are relaxed and comfortable it's much easier to pick up tells. Tell a joke, that's never a bad idea. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Gabriel (Queens, NY): Hi Daniel. I am a big fan and greatly respect your poker ability. Which one of your tournament wins do you take the most pride in? Daniel Negreanu: That's an easy one. At the end of 2004 I won $1.8 million at the Bellagio. It was a special win because I was down to the felt half way through, but then made the final table with the biggest lead in history. The win also was pivotal in me capturing the Card Player of the Year award. And the money wasn't too bad either :-) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------John Forsyth(Lancaster,PA): Do you prefer cash games or tournament style? Also, who do you consider the 2nd best player in the world? Daniel Negreanu: I like both. However, if it's not a big buy in tournament or a high stakes cash game it doesn't garner my interest. If I had to pick, I would say that playing $4000-$8000 mixed games is the most enjoyable for me. As for the second best player in the world? I'd say me, lol. Ivey plays a lot more poker than I do and so his game has developed faster than mine. When I get done with all of my "business stuff" though, I plan on getting back into high stakes poker on a regular basis. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Mark NY: How has internet poker changed the game and do you play online? Daniel Negreanu: Online poker has changed the poker landscape forever. Today, there are more 24 year old millionaires than ever before. The majority of them are playing online. The speed of the games and the fact that you can play multiple games increases your earn big time. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------andre chicago: like a cornered animal does a pro like your self sometimes play better when the chip are down Daniel Negreanu: That is me in a nutshell. If there is no pressure, you won't see my best. I put a lot of pressure on myself which is important. When my back is against the wall, that's when I perform at my best. I am what you might call a "playoff performer." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Seth(Cincinnati Ohio): I feel like I know you from reading your blog. Your honesty and openess are awesome. You are everything that is right about poker. If you had to pick one event you wanted to win this year(besides the WSOP Main Event)what would it be and why? Daniel Negreanu: Oh, most definitely it would be the new $50,000 HORSE event. In facrt, this new event will automatically become the most prestigious event in poker history. You see, all of the TRULY best players in the world play mixed games. Also, with the high buy in, you won't see as many amateurs. There will be no random fluke in this event, no chance! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Seth(Cincinnati Ohio): So how is married life treating you? Daniel Negreanu: Wow, and I thought poker was tough! Marriage is a real job as I'm learning, lol. It really is a daily thing that you have to continue t work at. Luckily my wife Lori is a very rational person and we communicate very well. Thanks for asking! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Evan Bedel, Indianapolis, IN: Do you find the game more enjoyable with guys like Phil Hellmuth, Mike "the mouth", and Scotty Nygen at the table, or quiet guys like Ivey, Harrington, or Ferguson (Jesus)? Also, does the loud mouth frustrate you or give you better reads and tells? Daniel Negreanu: I likre a mix of both. If you have too many characters at the table it can turn into a circus really quickly, Could you imagine me, Hellmuth, Matusow, Grizzle, Farha, and Luske all at the same table? Nobody would be able to get a word in! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Omar (boston, ma): could you briefly talk about the best bluff of your career and the best laydown of your career? thanks Daniel Negreanu: Best Bluff: Without a doubt the bluff against Freddy Deeb. I was drawing completely dead on the turn, but bluff raised Freddy on the river. He laid down AK on a board of K--6-2-4-4. I had A-7. Best laydown was in the first WSOP event I ever played in 1998. I raised with QQ and my opponent re-raised. The flop was 7-2-3. I checked and he went all in. I folded, and he showed AA. I ended up winning the tournament! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Rish (San Jose, CA): Do you still get nervous when a veteran, poker champ sits at your table. Do you start to play different or do you play the same? Daniel Negreanu: I don't get nervous anymore at all. When I first started, sure, seeing Johnny Chan at my table was totally scary. Today, though, I've proven to myself that I belong with the big boys. Having said that, when i play against some of the best, it brings out the best in me. I focus harder. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Justin: Who would you rather face heads up, Phil Hellmuth or Mike Matusow? Daniel Negreanu: Either would be good, but I think Hellmuth is easier. Hellmuth is a good hold'em player, but if we played mixed games I think I would destroy him. Matusow plays the split games a little better than Phil, but I'd beat him like a stepchild too, lol. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Willie (Chicago): Hey Daniel, quick question. I read your blog on FullContact and have read several times where you say, "we ran it twice" or "We ran it three times". What does this mean and why would you do this? is it something specific to a certain game or what? just curious...thanks and good luck in your next tourney! Daniel Negreanu: It's a way to lower variance. Running it twice means that you use two different river cards, each one is used for 1/2 of the pot. Win both, you win the whole pot. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Billy (St. Thomas): For those of us just starting out, what's the most important part of our opponents' game we should take note of during play? Daniel Negreanu: Try to classify them as loose or tight first. Look at the cards they turn over. Then, look for the bluffers and the honest players. Those are vary basic ideas, but that's exactly where you should start. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Danny (Elk Grove CA): You are one of the best poker players in the world. When you first started who's game did you think was the best and wanted to learn from? Daniel Negreanu: Johnny Chan and Huck Seed. Their no limit game at the time were the best in the business. They have totally different styles, Huck is very agressive while Chan is more of a trapper, but both styles are deadly when they use them. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Nicki ( Denmark ): What is the biggest mistake people make in NL hold em? Daniel Negreanu: Calling for all of their chips with marginal hands. People don't bluff as often as you'd think, but generally amateurs are what I call "non-believers." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Drew: (Hampton,NH): Bill Simmons set the ESPN Record for a chat at 2 hours yesterday Daniel, any plans on breaking that record? Daniel Negreanu: Bill Simmons ain't got nuthin' on me :-) He is actually my absolute favorite columnist in any magazine. In some ways, a lot of my writing is patterned after his amazing wit. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Andrew (Bristol): Daniel, can you explain what you are going to do once you have found your "Protege"? Daniel Negreanu: Well, once the Protege is crowned in late April, we are going to map out the schedule and look for four $10,000 buy in events for him/her to play in. Leading up to that, I'm going to watch him play a olot and look to spot his weaknesses. Then, I'm going to give him in depth lessons on how to play "small ball" poker, --------------------------------------------------------------------------------spiro - little silver: talk to us a little about Mike "the Grinder" Mizrachi- it seems that he is winning a TON of tournys lately- what makes him so good?? Daniel Negreanu: The Grinder comes from the online world which means he has a ton of hours under his belt. His poker game is very mature, he plays like he has been around a long, long time. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Ryan (Southborough, MA): When playing poker, what bands do you usually listen to on your ipod? Daniel Negreanu: Oh, this is going to sound so corny dude, but I listen to the ocean, birds chirping, you know, massage music, lol. It keeps me calm and relaxed. I also like Common, U2, Kanye West, Missy Elliot, Bob Marley, and a wide variety of other stuff. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------brad st louis MO: Will I get slaughtered on my first trip to a casino to play if all I have played is online? Daniel Negreanu: I don't think so. If you are a winning player online, you will most likely be a winning player in a live scenario. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Dylan (Boston): Do you feel someone can pick up your style of play by only watching you on TV? Daniel Negreanu: Yes and no. They can get a glimpse into what I like to do, but frankly, they won't be seeing the whole picture. Since the shows are edited you don't see the "set ups" that go into a big bluff or a big call. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------shell- new york city: daniel- favorite/coolest celeb that youve been able to meet with your new found poker fame?? Daniel Negreanu: I've met lots of people, but being a reality TV freak I think that getting the chance to hang out with Boston Rob recently was a ton of fun. Also, I think Tobey Maguire is a genuinely nice guy as is Shannon Elizabeth. She has a really good heart. There are many others I could list, but those names popped out of my head first. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Gilbert(DC): Why do you think poker has become so popular? And where do you see the game ten years from now? Daniel Negreanu: Because it's cool! The WSOP and Moneymaker's win helped the game explode. It let the world know that the game doesn't discriminate. Male, Female, Black, White, Fat, Skinny- none of it matters at the poker table. Poker's future will depend on how things go with the ratings. My biggest fear is that too many crrappy shows could hurt the game. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Ed Toms River, NJ: What are your thoughts on more Heads up Holdem Events in the Near Future Daniel Negreanu: Ahhh, excellent question. From a television perspective, it makes for GREAT tv. I am a member of the WSOP Advisory board and we are meeting tomorrow. One event I'd like to talk to them about having is a $25,000 buy in heads up tournament with one qualification: World Series of Poker Champions only. That would be great. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Derek, Venice Beach: How do you determine the length of your session and do you use a stop loss when a good night starts heading South? Daniel Negreanu: One of the first columns I wrote for Card Player magazine was called, "Play Hours Not Results." You should be able to find an archived copy at www.fullcontactpoker.com. Basically, I decide BEFORE I sit down, how long I'll be playing for. Generally between 6-8 hours. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Brian (pgh): If you weren't a poker pro, what would you be doing? Daniel Negreanu: Something TV related I think. I love movies, writing, acting, and that kind of stuff. I always wanted to be in that field when I was young. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Waffles2003-FCP (utah): DN, what is the one thing you havent bought yet that you are dying to buy? Daniel Negreanu: Well, my dream house. I plan on buying it next year and I'm assuming it will cost about $3-$4 million. I want the arcade, pool room, theater, work out room etc. I'm looking for the ultimate bachelor pad... although I'm married, lol. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Cayne (Federal Way, WA): Daniel, I'm a big fan. Thank you for taking my question... How do you get to the point to be able to lay down QQ preflop? Large pockets always take me out of tournaments against KK, or AA 'cause I can't lay them down even with strong feelings that I'm beat. Any general advice? Daniel Negreanu: Yikes, it's just not that easy to do. You shouldn't be folding KK before the flop ever. As for after the flop, the key is knowing your opponents tendancies. If an opponent you know doesn't bluff goes all in and the flop is 4-5-6, you AA are no good most times. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------foxwoodspro (CT): Daniel do you prefer playing short handed or full ring games? which do you feel is more profitable? Daniel Negreanu: Short handed to both. There is just way more skill involved in short handed poker since players are forced to play more marginal hands. You can't just sit there and wait for AA, you have to play some garbage like Q-7 also. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Jack Bauer (Los Angeles): I heard you watch the show. What do you think of this season? Daniel Negreanu: I am addicted to 24, but I've only seen season one. I have all of the other seasons and plan on watching season two tonight. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Phil (McAllen, Tx): Do pros mostly play in the tourneys to increase their off table revenue potential? Wouldn't they be better off grinding at the cash tables if they wanted to maximax their poker income? Daniel Negreanu: Frankly, a lot of the no limit players couldn't make a living in the cash games, A guy like Hellmuth for example, would be a losing player in the cash games at Bellagio so he is smart to stick to tournaments. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Chops (Wicked Chops Poker): Were you ever in consideration for (or considering) being Gordon's replacement on Celebrity Poker? They should ditch Foley and put you next to Hellmuth...I believe that would be what they like to call, "good TV." Daniel Negreanu: It's funny you mention that. I think they considered both Hellmuth and I. In the end, I think Foley and I may have too many similarities, both being Canadian and looking similar I mean. I think Helllmuth would be a good choice for the show. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Jamie, (Dallas,TX): Which is a better read? Harrington On Hold'em or your boy E-Dog's book? Daniel Negreanu: Good question. Unfortunately, since I haven't read either I couldn't tell you. I have started to read Harrington's book though and it seems pretty good. I'm sure both books are good. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Mat, (Rapid City, SD): I have heard about the PPT and watched a little bit of it. I like that they are trying a pro poker tour. What are your thoughts on this. I dont think anybody will just get tired at the end and call with a jack 10. Daniel Negreanu: There are several different groups trying to organize a pro tour and it just has to happen. I have some really cool ideas in mind for a pro tour. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------josh (va): are there any routines you have to go through before a tournament like eating the same meal, dressing the same? Daniel Negreanu: My rroutine: Show up one day in advance. Drink zero alcohol or caffeine. Unpack my bag (if I don't do that, for some reason I'm always out early. Eat alone. Avoid socializing with anyone. Daniel Negreanu: I don't mean to hate on other games, but they really aren;t too similar. STACKED is a big production with advanced A.I. and excellent graphics. When it's "finally" released, it will be the cream of the crop. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Mitch (San Francisco, CA): Daniel, I love watching you play, but why all the Hellmuth bashing? Daniel Negreanu: I love Hellmuth, I think he is hilarious. At the table he can be mean sometimes to amateurs, but overall he is great for the game. Having said that, if he sat with me at the poker table, I'd whup him pretty good, lol. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Kyle (Chicago): Daniel - what are your thoughts on the idea that the government and US legistators are trying to step in and stop online gambling in the United States? Daniel Negreanu: Ain't gonna happen. They are drawing dead, seriously. U.S. legislation cannon stop other countries from offering online gaming. All they can do is try to make it harder to get money to the sites. They stopped credit card use, but it had little effect. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Mike Collins, Milwaukee: Name a poker ametuer who the TV people give lots of credit and respect to, but in your eyes is overrated. Daniel Negreanu: I would say maybe Dutch Boyd or Phil Laak. Both are good looking guys who make great characters, however neither of them have the success of a John Juanda or Allen Cunningham but they get more recognition because they make for better TV in some ways. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Steven (Boston): Did you enjoy your heads up challenges, did they make you a better player in anyway, and will you do them again? Daniel Negreanu: Most definitely. I started off slow losing 4 out of my first five matches, then I won 4 straight. I will be doing them again sometime down the road when I have more time. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Josh (Maryland): Since you seem to like TV producing, if the networks let you make any kind of reality TV show, what would it be? Daniel Negreanu: Well, I am going to be involved n a reality show of sorts. The Daniel Negreanu protege contest that is going on right now at www,fullcontactpoker.com will end up on television. We are going to shoot a show out of the final 10 players that will lean towards reality. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------murtin nj: do you have plans of releasing a book anytime soon? Daniel Negreanu: Yes, I do have a book coming out and the target date is Christmas. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Jonathan (PA): Will there ever come a time were you focus on playing in the big game more then tournaments? Daniel Negreanu: That is my eventual plan. This week I've played a lot in the big game. In fact, after this chat I will be headed down to Bellagio tonight to play. When I become a father I think I'll be forced to travel less which means more time for the big game. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Andy (Denver): How long do you think it will take to make you "apprentice" a decent player? Daniel Negreanu: Well, I think that who ever wins the Protege will have to be decent already. In order to qualify, you have to win your seat against others. So, with a decent set of tools, I think that within two weeks I can make him a serious threat to win a million dollar tournament. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------chris (arizona): how impressive was greg raymers runs at the main event Daniel Negreanu: That was pretty creepy actually. Amazing is an understatement. He obviously must have used his new found celebrity to his advantage. Good for him, Raymer is a good guy and is great for poker. Daniel Negreanu: If you go the site you can find all the details there. If you happen to miss out on the first one, don't worry, there will be a sequel! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Max (Demonde) (Asheville): How have us FCPers affected your life? Daniel Negreanu: It might surprise you, but they have had a real affect om me. When we opened up the FCP forum, I really didn't know what to expect or even if anybody would use it. Then it just took on a life of it's own. I feel like I know some of the posters. In fact, I do know some of them because many of them won an opportunity to come over to my house for the weekend for a "Weekend at Daniel's." --------------------------------------------------------------------------------richard (jacksonville): how good is phil ivey compared to everyone else? Daniel Negreanu: The difference between Ivey and the rest isn't so much that he is that much better, but his long term focus is way better than his competitors. If you play 20 straight hours with Phil, you'll see that his focus actually gets better! Scary, but true. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------Eric (New York): How does it feel playing poker with cameras rolling all around you? Daniel Negreanu: You get used to it. It's part of the deal. I think that many players feel a little uncomfortable with it, but it doesn't affect me much. I'm pretty comfortable in front of the camera. Daniel Negreanu: Anyways guys, I had a lot of fun chatting with you all. it's time for me to hit the showers and get ready to meet the boys down at Bellagio. Remember, if you want to read about how I did you can checkout my blog at www.fullcontactpoker.com. God Bless...
