Jeff 0
So I was thinking, how come poker is the only sport where the participants put up their own money? Why don't other sports do this? Why doesn't Tiger Woods offer to play anyone in the world for $1 million? It could be a mix also, like match play, stroke, stableford modified scoring. It could be on anyone's home course...interesting, no?

I've never played that game, but a lot of the kids that do are pretty smart. I used to say the same thing about the nerdy kids in high school, but now I realize that most of them are going to grow up and be rich. You can always buy pussying.

KowboyKoop 0
by the way, golf isn't a sport eitherGolf is a lot more of a sport than poker. Not saying it requires a tremendous amount of athleticism...but their is physical skill involved...so it gets a little bit of credit.
supertouch 0
Wrong.dude, come on, there is nothing athletic about golf. being athletic might will help you, but it is purely a learned skill.
doublemeup 0
It depends on if you view it as a sport or not. Even if you do, poker players should have to put up their own money.

reedmcneal 0
They may not literally bet money on themselves, but they certainly invest lots of money in trainers, equipment, etc. to improve themselves, and hopefully make more money in the long run.
PMJackson21 0
dude, come on, there is nothing athletic about golf. being athletic might will help you, but it is purely a learned skill.sport (spôrt, spōrt)n1.a.Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.Seems to fit the criteria to me. When people play it on the weekend for leisure, it's a game. When people play it competively, it's a sport.

econ_tim 0
it's a legitimate question, but i guess there was a time when competitors in other games had to pay there own way.if poker's popularity stays strong, it may become profitable for networks or companies to sponsor tournaments. we are seeing some of this already. high-stakes poker on GSN paid the players several thousand dollars an hour to play, although the players risked their own money. the WPT has started the PPT, a freeroll series of tournaments for players who have proven their skills. WPT and the Travel Channel are still negotiating over the television rights to the PPT, but we could see it air in the near future. the WSOP tournament of champions is another example of a high-profile freeroll.even with the several freerolls i have mentioned, i think very few pros could make a living off of the freeroll circuit. if the PPT starts airing and proves popular, then maybe the freeroll circuit will expand. it depends a lot on the public's taste for tournaments. if they like to watch skilled poker players make great plays, then the professional freerolls will provide that. if they want to watch amateurs get lucky and win millions, then the current pay-your-way tournaments will remain popular. thrillsoft 0
Poker is a game, not a sport. I'd love to consider myself an athlete. I was at one time but certainly not anymore.Poker is a sport like video games and bridge are sports.

So, you're trying to tell me that if you practiced enough you could be good enough to compete on the pro tour?

leftygolfer 7
by the way, golf isn't a sport eitherGotta disagree bro...some athletic skill is required to hit the little white ball.Hand/eye coordination and flexability also come to mind. You just can't be some overweight, cigarette smoking, scotch drinker to play at the top level now. With the prize money these days, the average PGA pro is certainly in much better shape compared to 25 years ago.I am sure our resident FCP golf pro Oziumrules may have a few things to say.
