CaneBrain 95
I'm quite certain I look *exactly* like a republican. I'm practically wearing the uniform in those pictures. I'm much closer to a libertarian in disguise though.Thank you. He is absolutely hilarious. I'm glad your work is settling down a little. I'm lucky that my second job takes place mostly on my couch. When I worked in public accounting and did the 70+ hour weeks in business clothes I could make blog forum mike look like mr. rogers. That's one my keys to life------I may be a Jewish Democrat but with my Irish last name and Palm Beach upbringing/attire I can totally pretend to be an Irish Republican if I feel like it and nobody would question it for a second.I have reached a point in my job where it is acceptable to work from 830--630 at work and then do another hour or two at home and everyone is fine with that. It's very helpful. Given the recent changes to Florida poker laws, I am REALLY looking forward to some free time this weekend. Going to play some 2/5 PLO or NLHE tonight with some functional retards (Floridians).Inception on Sunday.

Marco Rubio, the darling of the Tea Party. So, 1. go find Texas' version of Rubio, kick him in the nuts until he retires from politics, 2. ?????, 3. Poker!I feel like I probably have more in common with you than anyone on this forum. speedz99 145
When the alternative is "Bo" I think it actually makes sense. After one "Bo knows foreplay" joke, the relationship would be over anyway.I think it'd be over faster if the joke was, "Apparently Bo knows everything but foreplay."The second memory is of the first time I killed something with my bb gun. It was a warm and sunny afternoon and I was in the backyard with my trusty Red Ryder carbine-action, 200-shot, range model air rifle doing a little target shoot at cans. During a pause in the action I spied a fat little meadowlark sitting on the clothesline. "Well that's a perfect target" I thought to myself. So I took aim and popped one off. Bingo! The bird dropped off the wire instantly. As I walked toward the downed prey to examine my handiwork I noticed that the bird wasn't dead, rather laying limply on the ground breathing rapidly and struggling to flap it's wings. As I stood over the creature I saw that I had hit it square in the chest. If I close my eyes I can still envision the dark red blood contrasting against it's bright yellow chest. I was struck by this creature still struggling to flee even as it was gravely wounded. I was overtaken by feelings of revulsion, regret, and remorse at inflicting harm on this creature on a mere whim. I decided I had to do the humane thing and end it's suffering so I reluctantly put the barrel up to it's head and put an end to that once happy little bird. It was then that I knew the gravity of taking a life, any life be it human or animal. From then on I knew I would never again kill anything without reason. In the years when I did do some periodic hunting I always tried to make the kills as quick and clean as possible and never considered trophy hunting. Everything I killed, I ate. I think I owe at least that to any animal I shoot.I liked this story. I mean, it's really sad, but it was well done and probably slightly difficult to share. He is hilarious if you like non-standard racial humor. Lots of stuff about Indian people and Asian people and their eccentricities. I like him. I hope you go on a strong roll of craps and get to miss his show. He's one of the painfully unfunny people that tons of others find funny. Although he is funny in that "Black people do this, but white people (they so crazy!) do this..." way, except with Indians and a strong accent. Which is to say, not at all. You're both right. Most of his show was partly off the cuff comments about people in the audience and working their respective races/nationalities into the act. I'm sure most of it was pre-written stuff about each nationality, but some of it was definitely ad libbed, and done very well. He dragged on a bit for the last half hour, when all of a sudden it seemed to be an exercise in telling people how cool he is because he's been all over the world and eaten with kings and whatnot, but all in all it was fairly enjoyable for what it was.I ended up doing ok at the casino. I lost some money playing craps, which I've decided is only a fun game when you're at a good table, which I suppose is true of most games. I then played limit poker with a few friends...it took me over two hours to win my first hand, but I ended up about breaking even, only because even being 99% card dead left the 1% to use against piss-poor competition. Then back to losing some money at craps. Slept a few hours, and was on a great run at the hold em table game, but ended up breaking even after they brought in the cooler (Dragon Lady). Some crazy asian woman at my table was playing 80-100 on the bonus line, and after blowing a few grand hit pocket aces for 30-1. We celebrated and had some fun for a bit, after which she gave it all right back. Highlight of the weekend was lunch today (somewhat sadly). I hadn't eaten for about 24 hours, mostly by accident, and we went to Prime, a solid restaurant that serves a 28 day dry aged burger for $5 for their weekend lunch special. It was...delicious. Southern Buddhist 1
Speedz (and others), you are my god. How the hell do you do grad school and still manage your posting level on here? I'm currently in six-week summer "bootcamp" (TA training) and it's kicking my ass. This is week five, and I've finally pulled ahead of the game long enough to consider a trip to the beach, checking in here, and so on, but as soon as this is over, the semester starts. I still did post more than the average human, I guess, because almost any time I wasn't in class I was studying, and posting here is a good study break for a few minutes every half hour or so. I'm living the good life this summer, but as soon as the fall semester starts I'll be back to having no life whatsoever, so I feel your pain. Speaking of school, I recently checked out my schedule, and it's absolutely ridiculous. We're in class straight 8-5 (minus lunch) most days...which sounds like a normal job, but I'm sure you all remember school well enough to realize that it's fucking insane to have that much prep to do every night and nearly impossible to stay as focused as one should be in class for that many hours. Here's the class list for year 2...yes, all of these classes will be fit into two semesters.Basic PharmacologyCardiovascular Pathophysiology Clinical Pharmacology Clinical Skills IIClinical Veterinary Genetics Diagnostic Imaging Diagnostic Microbiology LabEmerging & Exotic Diseases of Animals Endocrine Pathophysiology Epidemiology & Biostatistics Gastrointestinal Pathophysiology General Parasitology Hemic Lymphatic & Clinical Pathology Introduction to Zoological Medicine Law and Veterinary Medicine Molecular Biology & Microbial Pathogenesis Principles of Surgery Public Health Problem Based Learning III Respiratory Pathophysiology Reproductive Physiology Second Year Clinical Rotations Toxicology Urinary Pathophysiology Veterinary Neurobiology
speedz99 145
Looking at that list makes me want to curl up into the fetal position and...well, I'm not sure what's next, but I've officially gone fetal. I can't reach any drugs or alcohol from my current position, so I may have to crawl a few feet at some point in the next few minutes. I'm slightly nauseous. Vet school! speedz99 145
This doesn't make any sense. Are most of these 1 or 2 credit classes? I don't understand.None will be 1 credit, but a handful will be 2 credits. But think about it this way...I'm in class for, let's say, an average of 35 hours per week. When compared to an undergraduate education, that's probably at least twice as many hours as the typical courseload, so you can take twice as many classes in a year. It's like doing two undergrad years packed into one awful grad school year, with the worst part being that almost all of the classes are as hard as or harder than anything I ever took in undergrad. This sounds like complaining more than I mean it to, but it is what it is. Additional cliche.
Southern Buddhist 1
That's much rougher than what I've got. Right now I'm only in class 9-3 every day, but it still feels like a lot, especially with the reading. [Also probably because I'm such a night owl -- I'd actually handle it better if it were 9 PM to 3 AM.]When the semester starts I actually have a bit of the opposite problem. I will have some spare time, but the conditions of my scholarship require that I teach two freshman composition classes and take only two of my own graduate classes, plus a few 1-credit colloquia. If I get a master's in two years, that's only two classes per semester x four semesters total = eight classes for my master's. I just don't think that's enough. I want to immerse myself in Shakespeare research, and instead I'm doing lesson plans to teach 18-year-olds to write a basic non-F paper. Although I was admitted on the PhD plan, I'm thinking I might just get a master's here and apply to a smaller school, where I won't have to teach, for my PhD.I liked Hot Tub Time Machine. It's not great art, but it's an amusing diversion for a couple hours. My standards are pretty low, though, when I'm admitted free with student ID, as opposed to when I have to pay for entertainment. speedz99 145
Can I ask what must sound like a very stupid question to someone with your background?I'll assume that the answer is yes, I can. What's left to research about Shakespeare? Do you already have a dissertation subject in mind?
Southern Buddhist 1
All the basic facts about Shakespeare's existence are pretty much out there. [Of course, if something's yet to be discovered, then I don't know about it, but I don't think there's much left.] Mostly now it's about new interpretations of the plays. That said, though, there's a lot going on in Shakespeare studies. There _is_ new research into how theatre companies rehearsed in the Jacobean era, which gives us a clearer picture of how roles were learned. There's a lot of effort right now going into trying to capture the way a play felt, sounded, and appeared to audience members at the time.Shakespeare also had a number of contemporary jokes -- for instance, watch a Saturday Night Live from the 1970s and see how many ephemeral pop-culture references you no longer get. The character of Polonius in Hamlet is thought to be a caricature of Lord Burghley, but it's hard to be sure since that's not written down anywhere. Did audiences recognize political leaders and celebrities of the day in Shakespeare's minor characters? Almost certainly, but we no longer do. Some scholars are trying to recover that context (which could lead to a production set in the modern day with spoofs of Palin or Lindsey Lohan). What I'm doing is specializing in the source materials. That's an old-fashioned approach -- nothing new's been done on them since the 1950s. But I want to look again at what he used as sources and see if there are distinct patterns to his borrowings. Did he consistently cut some elements? Consistently adapt events in a certain way? Are there certain types of stories he was more drawn to out of the sources and others he avoided? Knowing more about those patterns can reveal something of his thought process. The plan I had coming in to grad school was that my master's thesis will be a feasibility study of republishing the source materials, and my dissertation will be the actual publishing of the first book (he took material from a couple dozen sources, and I want eventually to republish them all, for scholars to analyze). If I have to push that back so that the feasibility study is the dissertation, then for my master's thesis I'll probably look at interpreting Hamlet through the lens of the Protestant / Catholic split.Trust me, it's not at all a stupid question. I sure don't know a horse larynx when I see one.
