Randy Reed 0
I just don't see how we can possibly lift the pre-existing conditions ban and not have bankruptcies galore. If you go out and get AIDS, which costs 100's of thousands a year to maintain different drugs, not you can go get Blue Cross and they charge you $200/month for that?I...just can't comprehend how this is possible. Was there something specific I said that you wanted more detail on? I don't want to muddle this important thread up, but I can address ad nauseum any area you'd like.I agree 100%. It's the difference between health insurance reform and health care reform. What passed was health insurance reform in a way that has very little grounding in common sense or reality. What needs to happen is health care reform. Things like decentralizing care, standardizing medical information, forcing price transparency so the industry is required to actually compete on price, changes in the legal environment surrounding malpractice, re-examining when and how medicare work, allowing reimportation of foreign produced generic drugs, and a whole bunch of other stuff would contribute to fixing the costs of care and increase the availability of it.I don't really understand what you're saying here. Everyone with a few bucks can open a health savings account. If someone lives paycheck to paycheck because they work a very low paying job, they likely qualify for medicare and additional funding from their state. If someone lives paycheck to paycheck because they are horrible at dealing with money and refuse to live within their means, but have a well enough paying job, I have a really hard time wanting to pay for them. Some states like colorado have additional help for people with preexisting conditions. (https://www.covercolorado.org/)I soooo agree with this except for reforming health insurance, we probably made it worse.

Ron_Mexico 4,219
I disagree. 5-6 years ago my wife and I chose to not have medical insurance. We were both young (relatively), healthy, self employed and decided on not spending a couple hundred a month for insurance between the two of us. It ****ed us bad. Right after we got married my wife got pregnant. We were not planning on having kids for a couple years. Pregnancy is a pre-existing condition. So we had to go out and get small business insurance as a group (the two of us being that group). Instead of paying 2-3/mo for insurance, it was now closer to $600 a month and then after my son was born it went to $1100/mo. We had to pay that for two months before we could switch to a lesser plan.So if Loogie honestly does not have health insurance, he is choosing to not have it. I know he partakes in some extra curricular activities. Unless it is always provided to him for free, he is choosing that over health insurance. In my opinion that is not really debatable.again, completely disagree. Not having health insurance as a choice is completely dumb and short sighted, especially if you were making all that bank. As you stated, it was because you were young and healthy, but at any minute of any day, something crazy or sudden can happen and change your life forever. So, it was just a poor idea on your part, as it proved out. And yes, if loogie can get high, he can afford a very basic plan, but as someone posted, those plans are very bare bones and cover practically nothing, from what I saw that was cut/pasted.No. I was agreeing with you, directing the comment at myself. I am the asshole.ah, this is no fun if you use logic and explain things cordially. I take your points and sheepishly move to the backgroundWas there something specific I said that you wanted more detail on? It's not either dirt poor and qualify for government assistance and make enough money and are terrible with money. There is a huge gray area in the middle that consist of people that make more than allowed to receive assistance but not enough to put away for things, and yes, having a kid or two might contribute to their not having enough money to go around, but as Guapo pointed out, even republican accidentally get people pregnant, not just blacks. Ok, so I'm being a dick now, but you take my point I hopeconcur1. Many of those ideas were proposed in various bills that weren't allowed to be debated or read on the floors because they were proposed by republicans. Several of them Obama himself said were worth considering. None of them were included in the final bill.2. They're not "my people" because we share some idealogical ground. I have a significantly more limited idea of what government should do than most people in either major party. 3. Most millionaires in america have never made more than 100k / year in their lives. There are a lot less people who can afford health care but prioritize things like entertainment, eating out, what part of town they live in and what kind of car they have over it than you think. I don't expect us to find much middle ground here though.

El Guapo 8
again, completely disagree. It was a conscious decision to not purchase health care insurance. I was pretty much just putting it off. But there are a lot of people like myself that are(were) considered in that uninsured category. As for the bare bone plans, I guess that is a matter of persepective. There are HMO's, that cover everything, but cost a lot and PPO's that cover major medical stuff but you have co-pays and deductible to meet before that coverage kicks in.So I have sorta a hybrid. I pay about $600/mo for a family of four. I think we have a 2K deductible for the place and $35 copay. Now I could have the plan with no deductible and $10 co-pays, but it's over 1K a month. So unless I go to the Dr. 17 times a year, plan 1 is cheaper even though there is a deductible.

gobears 0
gobears - Love him, but rarely posts. Cut. re: insurance. I'm excited about all this. We're trying a grand, new social experiment. If it works, we'll have a healthier, and therefore, more productive populace. If it fails it will be a trillion dollar boondoggle that will further marginalize and enrage the middle class meaning the shooting will start that much sooner. It's win-win for a guy like me.Obama said that he was going to do this if elected and he did it with the help of the demoness Pelosi. I get a kick out of all these Republicans saying that it's against the will of the people. Well, it's against the will of the losers in the last election. And Strat now gets to be covered under his parent's policies until he's 27 - win win.Oh, I wanted to mention in the bracket talk that Andre just can't post from work anymore which is shy we don't get as many dog updates.Yeah - that sucks.
