InternetExplorer 2,609
i really need to get into a firm that offers the partner track. the big corporation will never give me that kind of security. My firm effectively did away with it. They are going to start awarding much smaller amounts, so you’d have to be a top performer for upwards of 15 years to get the equivalent of what this dipshit received. This guy has brought in precisely no revenue ever, and with this incident, jeopardized a revenue stream many times his salary. It’s embarrassing. All of these factors have led to me taking networking much more seriously. I’m joining a few different groups, worst case scenario is that I get a better perspective on what’s out there. I always discounted networking when I was in school, when really it’s the primary opportunity source.
Essay21 2,385
Networking is the worst, but oh so necessary. I have to force myself to do it, and hope it does pay off in the end.
Napa Lite 3,278
I’m terrible at networking. I don’t really have anything in return to offer so I just feel like I’m taking advantage of an actual successful person.
InternetExplorer 2,609
This is a very safe place from that perspective A lot of the successful people I know tend to want to pay it forward. They all have someone they looked up to back in the day.

I think I've mentioned this before but manager-tools.com has a really great model for managing and excellent podcasts about it. They also have a set of accompanying podcasts called career tools in which building and maintaining a professional network is focused on pretty extensively. I too suck at networking and have yet to employ their strategy but they do espouse what appears to be a fairly simply approach requiring not a lot of effort. Might want to check it out.

hank213 1,823
Strat, with your goal of COO I think you should really hit the manager tools trinity. If you were to get a firm understanding of the techniques then roll it out as you get direct reports under you, I think you could very well accelerate your timeline for achieving that objective. Start of with the trinity basics and also look into the effective meeting casts. I've started adopting the meeting philosophy of start and end on time no matter what and a few other tweaks and I already see some improvements in efficacy for my meetings vs meetings led by others. napa, you don't strike me as someone who is really looking to be a people leader but they still have tons of stuff that could add to your toolkit (project management, budgeting etc) However, I think any role you grow into is probably going to have at least a little bit of people management and will definitely require you to lead meetings effectively so I don't think the trinity is as important for you but is still probably worth getting a passing acquaintance with so should you find yourself leading a team you have some ideas and can do a re-listen to firm them up. SA you might want to check it out too, they have some good casts on dealing with admin assistants and how to handle negative career events.
BigDMcGee 3,352
Christmas will now be celebrated on December 2, because that is the day my lord and savior Scott Frost came home, to wash away our sins. Happy Frostmas, everyone!

Napa Lite 3,278
You know, Hank, when you put it like that you’re making me painfully aware of the fact that I don’t really know what my next step is. Shit.
hank213 1,823
Embrace it. Dabble here and there. Find your muse then grab hold and ride. But eventually you'll most likely come to a cross road where you will have to choose between people leader or thought leader in your company/field. If you've got the knack for deep dive, high detail learning to develop highly specialized knowledge that no one else in your department/company has, then focus on that and less on the manager tools if you want to be a thought leader. If you want to be Chief or Director someday then you'll definitely want to have the people leadership skills from manager tools in your kit.

Napa Lite 3,278
FOR FRAU I was itching to buy something on Black Friday but didn’t need anything for me so I bought Mack a toy instead of saving for a house. Right choice, IMO.

Napa Lite 3,278
What kind of timeline are we talking here? Cause if I knew I’d have a roommate ready to go I’d feel better about buying a house. But she’d also have to be willing to live in a less than recently remodeled house but the rent would be very reasonable.
Napa Lite 3,278
But to your original question...no, I do not know of any rooms for rent at the moment but I’ll keep my ears open.

But she'd also have to be willing to live in a less than recently remodeled house but the rent would be very reasonable. Well it's not urgent or anything. Maybe by the Spring. She's in a similar situation to you, in that she just needs to relocate for mental health. She would not care about the quality of the house.
Napa_Don 688
OK, well, even if I don't buy a house we could maybe be roommates elsewhere.
