If you are paying $20 for a haircut, I imagine people assume you did it yourself anyway.

and after 3 days, he is risen!

Pocket change cost me my first and only black girlfriend.   It was in the middle of a roaring poker boom and I was flush in ways most men don't even bother dreaming of. Money, it was like dirt to me

So last night, I went to a coworker’s birthday thing downtown, spent a good chunk of the night talking to a female coworker, then left with her at 1am to go get food. She’s one of my ex’s best friends, so nothing’s gonna happen there, but now there’s this spicy rumor. I laughed when I realized what we had done. There are much more dramatic things happening at work, so I don’t think it really matters.

This girl is gorgeous and seems to be into me, and even though it cannot happen, I’m feeling pretty good today.

Like tired in a lazy way or a "I need to see a doctor" way?

Both?  I’ve been working a ton between my day job and side thing but also just in bad place mentally where I don’t feel like I’m doing a good job at anything. I’m just...tired.

We've all been there.  Are you seeing a counselor?  That's step 1.

Also, I'm sure you're doing much better at work than you imagine.

Thanks for the picture of the dogs!

I am solo at my place. Since Nov 1. It’s really great, tbh. Loss of rental income, be damned.

My review schedule is sometime in the next two months. It’s a super informal process with the idea being that it should just be a summary of what’s been discussed throughout the year in one on ones. Like I don’t even have formal goals. But my boss just got a pretty big title promotion and I played a big part in her hitting basically the only goal of hers she really completed. So, based on that, and her telling me she considers me a top performer I expect to get the max of 3%, which, thanks, I guess.  I’m relatively positive my boss already makes twice my salary in just base but she also gets a bonus, which don’t get me wrong, she’s probably one of the most valuable employees here, but as cost cutting measures they recently limited the flavored k cups and creamers in the break room.  And the sales team had a week long year kickoff retreat at 5 star hotel in Miami recently.  But I can’t have my flavored coffee and my one non-management work friend anymore (because they fired him).

They just announced a bunch of promotions yesterday and I wasn’t in them so, I think it’s safe to assume I won’t get a promotion even though our reviews aren’t done yet. Weird system, I know.  But I’ve also only been here for little over a year now.

In December they laid off one member of our  team and another in accounting (and like 11 others from our 250ish total staff). Consultants have been here off and on the past few months because our parent company’s stock has tanked the past two years.  I’ll probably hold out for the next year and see if there’s any possible actual advancement path other than title bumps once the consultants make their recommendations (and I assume they’ll be consolidating some business lines to our company) and if not I’ll really start job searching. I mean, I already basically take a meeting with any recruiter that contacts me, but I’m being super picky and haven’t even actually applied anywhere else yet.

My side job client had their annual meeting this past weekend and I gladhanded and all that jazz.  One of the partners also owns part of the old bookkeepers, who messed up royally which is why I was brought in, and I had to very carefully explain that I think they messed up again this year and have been getting zero help from them in the transition. But the main partner says he got really good feedback from the other partners and they’re all really happy with me and he thinks he’ll be able to almost double my fees this year (which is still less than they used to pay and I haven’t messed up yet). So I’ve got that to look forward to when my year agreement is up this fall.

That's pretty sweet all around, except for the firing your friend part.  What are we doing for a social life?  Bars?  Church?  Karate?

We need to be out mixing it up or something.

My company did the same to me this year, no communication, just published the org chart and made a lateral change to my title. I was pissed off about not getting promoted last year, and this year felt even worse. I am beginning to see why some say making a big show of announcing promotions is reinforcing a status-seeking mindset.

We have a local company that has given our college millions of dollars in donations and nobody has an announced title.  Their lead team has business cards that they can give to outside clients, but internally everyone's offices are mixed together and nobody has a title that is used.  I think it's an interesting idea, but the entire culture has to be bought in or it would just end up being lip-service.

Flying back home from this conference. Found out that I did a little better than the maximum on my bonus, like 10% of base. Still don’t know what happened with equity, or if that has been decided.

At one point, the thought was to maybe work for the company that puts on this conference, but they are getting bought by a bigger competitor, and everyone’s fired. The leadership people, typically perfectly on message no matter how many drinks in, were brutally candid about the outlook. “We did this to like 15 other firms up to this point, so I guess this is only right.”

I think that’s a little crazy. I think titles are important for external and internal communications, but ideally have it divorced from the compensation specifics. I’m sure there’s not a right answer here, but lavishing praise on someone only while the title bump has occurred just seems to be encouraging the wrong thought process.

Tomorrow is our 22nd anniversary, and instead of going somewhere crazy, we are just staying in town.  We are going to stay a couple nights in the loop away from the kids and it should be fun.  I'm trying to hit up some new places to eat, but it's always hit and miss.  Chicago is a great town and I'm excited to try some new places.

This is our current reservation schedule:

Friday supper:  Galit

Friday night:  House of Blues

Saturday brunch:  The Walnut Room

Saturday:  Art Institute and a tour of one of Frank Lloyd Wrights Chicago homes.

Saturday evening:  Morton's

Saturday night:  A Wailin'Jennys Concert at the Patio Theater.  It's my wife's absolute favorite group, so that's a win no matter what.

Sunday breakfast:  The Little Goat .   (Mexico, this place is run by a Top Chef winner Stephanie Izard.  I'm excited to try it.)

I don't have a place for Sunday lunch yet, but I'm hoping to nail something down tonight.

Let me know how goat is. I'm kinda kicking myself I didn't try one of her places when I was in Chicago a few years ago. Not only is she a top chef winner, she's also an iron chef.

I'll definitely write up a review for you.  I tried too late to get a res at a decent time for Cabra or Duck Duck Goat and they were all gone.  I'll definitely be trying all of her places at some point if I like Little Goat, which I suspect I will.

Why can’t it happen? Life’s to short for doing anything but going for it.

me? I’m the same. I was on my way home tonight and as soon as pulled out of the garage I knew I needed to shit. I figured I’m home in 20 I’ll make it. Only there’s an accident on the bridge and 15 minutes later I’ve made it 4 blocks. Now I’m in a panic and I have to u turn cause I got no time to spare. Rush back to the office and make it upstairs to sweet relief. Best I’ve felt in weeks.

Suited, I just want to go on record as saying you are lacking big-time in your posting.  Step it up, dude.

I’d post If I had anything to say or report or any new thoughts at all. But I don’t. Down to 165 pounds, but still ugly so not much has changed except I can see my ribs.

I got a big raise and my bonus went up significantly, which is nice. Not doing anything with the money though. Just into savings.

Sports betting hasn’t gotten through yet in MO. They’re still racking other useless shit onto the bill, but it will get done.

just gonna watch it with my mom cause I go over to her house every Sunday for dinner.

#2 in the company schedules a meeting for Monday with me and my boss to talk about what’s good and bad with my role, what they can do to make my life better. I wanted to be productive this weekend, but now I get to work on this talk track.

In the same email, he asked me for a link to the manager tools podcast. I gave the one on ones podcast to my previous manager, back in 2017, so I was a little surprised at first, then I put it together.

Anyway, what prompted this meeting, I tried to have a “path” discussion with my manager, and she was apparently not having a great day and too busy to talk, and snapped at me very rudely. I removed the block on my calendar for our 1:1 and we haven’t met since, which has to be why the podcast is being brought up.

The other factor that probably contributed here, in talking with the CEO on my trip last week, I mentioned some operational details about a mega RIA in KC that is not public. I have ops group contacts, and he knows this, so it’s not a 100% certainty in his mind that I had been chatting with a hiring manager, but that would be the logical conclusion. I’m 100% ready to have the “you are not loyal” discussion.

Was the time she snapped at you during your O3 time or outside the scheduled time? If it was outside O#, was it a scheduled or impromptu attempt at the discussion?
