If you are paying $20 for a haircut, I imagine people assume you did it yourself anyway.

and after 3 days, he is risen!

Pocket change cost me my first and only black girlfriend.   It was in the middle of a roaring poker boom and I was flush in ways most men don't even bother dreaming of. Money, it was like dirt to me

I want to get your opinions on an exciting project I'm working, currently called Spice Cloud. The idea came to me while visiting a grocer several hours from my home, at which point it occurred to me that I wasn't sure whether or not I had enough cumin. I didn't want to overstock, and I certainly didn't want to drive home only to find I needed to make another 5 hour round trip. There was no solution...until Spice Cloud.

Spice Cloud is a cloud-integrated spice rack/analytic balance, keeping dynamic, real-time spice masses stored on a server you can access through either a web console or the official Spice Cloud iOS app (there are no plans for an Android app, so choose your phones wisely from here on out). There will of course also be notifications to let you know when you are running low on something, and even analytical tools taking advantage of the tremendous amount of data you'll be monitoring regarding your spice usage. You could even schedule automatic repurchasing of particular spices when they reach a particular threshold, and let the analytics tools decide that threshold for you.

This was initially planned as a one-off custom job just for my own use, but the more I think about it, the more I think this technology would enrich the lives of millions of people.

So tell me: would you be willing to make Spice Cloud the most expensive appliance in your home?

Edit: oh ****, it looks like Spice Cloud is taken:

I want to be very, very clear about this: SpiceScape is NOT looking investments. We are simply curious about consumer interest in our product.

That just makes me want in even more. Put me down for $15k.

So, unless this spice keeper/cloud/scape (I think you should steal SpiceKeeper from me ASAP) can somehow look over my shoulder at the amount of spices I'm using, it's useless to me. No way I take the time and/or remember to input current spice inventory and then remember to update every time I put a few turns of pepper on my eggs in the morning.

Which means it's probably golden.

IoT is huge-huge. Its where the money is to be made in tech going forward. Days of being a 'coder' and getting rich are coming to a close. Electrical engineers who can write intelligent code are the new tech gods. In 20 years, you won't be able to buy any appliance that isn't integrated with some sort of data management application. We're talking shit that we are totally accustomed to being rote electromechanical (fridges, toasters, vacuums, etc) will be managable from a smartphone or tablet. This is coming and it will translate over into shit like you proposed there. Imagine a bar where the bottle pourer is not only completely digital, but keeps track of every drop it dispenses and sends that info wirelessly to the owners server/phone/tab whatever.. and the cooler keeps track of how many bottles are removed, the keg knows how much it has poured and all of it reconciles against the cash register and sends an alert to the automated camera should a discrepancy be found... and the camera begins to intelligently reconcile every transaction from product to payment on an employee by employee basis until the discrepancy is located.

This isn't a hypothetical. Actual system in development.

The new world we're in is big brother trash.

Actually, the one for booze pours is about 10 years old and in place. The first one I saw was at the Hard Rock in Hollywood (FL). You have to push a button to pour the shot, it comes out of the same type of thing that pours the soda and water. It has all varieties, well, mid level and top shelf. It is exactly the correct amount and it coordinates with the cash register.

My old boss was in that business up in Wisconsin, selling and installing those units. Bar owners love it because it eliminates theft and long pours. Bartenders hate it because they can't butter up regulars on the owners dime and make more tips. Bartenders call it good customer relations. Whatever. Bar owners scoff at the initial cost but it ultimately makes them money in the long run.

Napa, I can't believe you've been spending all of this electronic insomnia time not Clashing.

The fully integrated system (where the spouts, kegs, cooler, register and camera are all talking to each other) is about a year away.

so, I don't remember how long ago that ESPN video about scarra was released, but a bit of an update...

  • his team got beat up badly the next season, he stepped down
  • he came back as coach for them
  • they did badly again, he joined a much better team as coach
  • the much better team did horribly in the playoffs, so he was forced to step down

it's been less than two years and he's completely out of the competitive scene. I'm guessing he probably still makes $100k just from streaming, probably more. he was supposedly earning $300k at the peak.

If you were my shill and this were a scam, we would be up 20K each right now.

I will say, though, that electrical engineers getting rich off this is about as likely as construction workers getting rich off a housing boom.

You are imagining an early version of this app, SpiceLoop, which prompts you to measure every spice you own every time you start it. The whole point of selling hardware, and the meaning of "analytical balance," is to take these masses for you automatically.

Also, re: Scram, my vaporizer has an app to control temperature and such. We live in the first era that has a high enough standard of technology to truly achieve happiness.

I used to talk shit about idiots who thought materialism couldn't bring happiness. But maybe they were right decades ago, because they didn't have nice enough things back then.

Went and checked out the local casinos new (to me) poker room. I've been to the casino a few times on visits back here but they've not had the poker room for long. Now they're trying to be regional players and recently hosted a WPT event. Really nice room with several little hottie Asian women dealers which is nice. Nicer is that the game is juicy as hell. I did well but was pretty rusty after not having played for a couple months before Vegas the other day. And it's only 10-15 minutes from home.

We have a very cool farmers market /flea market near here that we used to go to a lot so we made our first visit since moving back. This thing is no run of the mill flea market. It covers nearly 100 acres. Came home with a huge load of fruits and veggies and I got a smoking deal on a Honda roto tiller so I can put in a garden. Hot here though so after walking around that place for three hours I'm not real motivated to put it to use.
