Izzy 0
Another kid, unable to legally drink or play cards in a real casino in many parts of the world has captured the EPT Grand Final. 19-year-old Jeff Williams, a US college student from Georgia, beat some of the world's top pros, earning himself close to a million bucks. http://cardplayer.com/poker_news/detail.ph...a82a690aef61ffdAs you know, this isn't an isolated case of a kid under 23 winning or finishing high in a major event, so what's going on here? The masters of the game have all needed years, sometimes decades to perfect their craft, and even some of them have not won a major.Obviously, the wild popularity of poker in recent years, combined with online gaming options has opened the floodgates to a new generation of poker pros in the making. Also, the pool of players (college-age players, the fastest growing demographic in poker) has reached such a high level, that luck/fluke is sure to bless the ocassional amateur at a major event (the amazing string of Moneymaker's suckouts on his road to victory comes to mind).Otherwise, what gives... does this wave of poker savant youngsters represent anything more than the fluke factor associated with the huge, growing numbers of young people taking up the game? One thing always brought up is that online poker, given the speed and frequency of hands (and multi-tabling), has given kids a chance to play alot of poker, really fast, anytime they want, so the learning curve is smaller than it used to be for B&M players. But there's more to poker than learning the technical points of the game. There are things called life experience, the maturity factor, wisdom, all of which are important to being a great player, none of which can be obtained by the age of 19.Daniel, who spent years in the trenches of charity casino poker rooms in Toronto, before he "made it" must have some thoughts on this issue. If you're reading, Dan, please share your thoughts.

The Bwaves 0
I'll keep it simple and only use one word;luckSkill is a factor, luck just outweighs skill in huge tournament fields.

STYLINHAWYN 0
too early to tell and make judgments on this kid based on one tournament. Give him a few more tries to prove he's a real douche... swseriously though, Let's not doubt the fact that the kid could be a natural. I mean he had to have done something right to send himself to Europe and play in a major event. let alone win it.
wsox8 10
awww I could have done it... He got so lucky.. I could kick his ass heads up anyday.
Wicked Clown 0
He must have skill, winning a tournament like that. To the op, what the heck are you talking about him not being able to legally drink or play in a casino in many parts of the world??? He can't do it in the US, which has 17th century rules about stuff like that in my opinion. But about Williams again, I'm sure he will get in some other big tournaments now too, just have to see how he does.....For his sake good....

Jam-Fly 8
In events like the WSOP main event and the 1million guarenteed tournament on pokerstars, luck is a huge element to winning the event, chances are the skillful palyers will cash, reach the final table or possibly, win it. But to actually win these events ALOT of luck is needed. ButHow many players were in this tournament ? Im sure it wasnt as many as the world series. The first year only 18or27 players got money, but im not sure about this year. But basically, the less players, the more skill required, but entering the WSOP main event for eample is like enter the lottery
Mercury69 3
Screw the youth movement. Compare it to a bowel movement. I'm over 40, just started playing seriously less than 6 months ago and I'm going to do just as well as some of these kids.OLD FOGIES FTW!
j2k99 0
i think its great that young kids are winning these events. However, it sends a false message to other young kids that it can easily be done thinking that they can win the big tourneys. Winning one tournament should not does not make you a professional player. They should have a back up plan when things go the opposite way.
