From Merriam-Webster Online: compete - [first definition] - to strive consciously or unconsciously for an objective (as position, profit, or a prize) : be in a state of rivalrySo there. The participants' desire to win has no relation to how we define their actions, and if they are playing baseball, football, etc, we define their actions as being a competition, whether they are competing consciously or not. Also, that kid rules!!!!!!!! What's your problem with the kid???? He's having a ball! To my eyes, he's not full of hate and anger, he's having a great time. He obviously saw somebody else do that, and thought it would be fun to mimick.
I think you need to get your eyes checked.Your definition proved my point. Have a nice day!

Your definition proved my point.
No it didn't. My definition shows that consciousness of competition is not necessary to the existence of that competition. You had said a player who is just playing a game to have fun is not involved in "true competition."My definition did the opposite of prove your point.

[/b]It's healthy competition Since when is competition healthy. Where there is a winner there is a loser. Losing makes most people feel bad. Feeling bad is not healthy.
i read this topic until i saw it was zzz posting, so i stopped.just as a note, competition is always healthy. the more competititon the closer to optimal outcome it gets.so as long as all participants are willing and uncoerced to compete in a fair environment, the competition is unquestionably healthy. in poker, all players realize there are differing skill levels, and are not aware of exactly their own relative standing. therefore a bad player losing his money is still considered healthy.yay econ1000.

When I am batting in a ballgame, the goal is to get a hit. Nobody goes up NOT trying to get a hit....that would be akin to not playing in the first place. If you choose to play a game like baseball, you are choosing to try to succeed at any of the various tasks involved. If you just didn't try to catch the ball or swing the bat, nobody would let you play....you in fact would not BE playing, you would just be standing there. By trying to catch the ball you are engaging in what is, by definition, a competitive game. And it's also fun to play. The fun part is trying to hit the ball, throw the ball, etc. This is also the competitive part of the game.
Thanks for trying!
Thanks for being a jerk!

I am sorry, but fun isn't in your definition of competition. Sorry. Thanks for trying!

Right, and neither is it discluded. "Fun" isn't in the definition of "amusement park" either, but amusement parks are fun.

Who are you to judge if winning or losing is healthy? Perhaps losing will help humble one to become a better person. Perhaps winning is truly the lessor of two options since it builds ego, while losing helps to make one humble.Where does this belief of competition being bad come from? Are you trying to explain that Jesus did not compete in anything? For example, all the other belief systems that exist.

Actually it did address exactly that, explicitly and completely. In case you are simply retarded and not a jerk, I'll summarize:Losing does not make people feel bad, if they agreed to compete, and the competition was fair. They would prefer to win, but in agreeing to compete, realized that losing was a potential likelihood, and therefore cannot feel "bad" about losing, though they do feel worse than if they'd won.Stop rationalizing why you suck at poker. You think you're good, but you suck. There is incomplete information, so you might feel bad about losing, but only because you did not realize how your suckage contributed to a high likelihood of losing. therefore your "bad" feelings was due to your own misinformation about the nature of the competition, and not relatable to the inherent fairness of the competition, since most competitors are aware enough of their own skill to realize the approximate likelihood of failing. You're welcome for trying.

Feeling bad does indeed happen when people lose a competition. You just lost all credibility. Sorry. Thanks for trying! Have a nice day!

Feeling bad doesn't sound very healthy to me. Jesus competed with the other belief systems that existed? No. He didn't come to anyone and tell them his beliefs. People came to him to learn about his beliefs. Therefore, it isn't a competition now is it. Thanks for trying! Have a nice day!
