Marc-O 0
Im trying to host a tournament in Southern ON. The person in charge of the venue is insisting on approval from the city. So i called up city hall, and they informed me that this it is illegal to host a tournament. Although, i have researched on the net, and do not find it illegal, as long as you do not take a rake. The tournament is a $100 buy in + $10 entry fee. Which the city claims is illegal to run.Ive been to numerous tournaments in Hall's that do this all the time. So, Who out there knows how to get around my problem ? and what makes this legal ? And how do i convince the city it is ? lol...Any help is appreciated.. thanks
Governator 54
What's the +$10 for? Your collecting off it hence illegal?
Mbattled 0
Seems to me that I have heard that it is illegal to host a poker game, per se, in Canada, unless you are a registered gambling house, i.e.: a casino. However, I can't offer any citations to support what I've heard.Notwithstanding the possible illegalities, though, if you do go ahead with it, plese let me know. threeparrots 0
Uh.. yeah. Being a Southern Ontario resident myself, I do know that you cannot host a poker tournament and make a profit from it - even indirectly, ie. beer sales.

woopdidydoo 0
call and ask if they recieved approval from the city before you fork out the dough.I've always wondered and didn't beleive it was possible or allowed.Thats why I never entered. Of course I live two blocks from my B&M.I also could never get a straight answer from anywhere that I searched.Like a previous post, the establishment is recieving 1. the rake, and 2. increase in food/beer sales as a result of holding the tourny. I'm under the impression from the little info I found is that this makes it an illegal tourny.Good luck finding the answer- please post it if you get the details.

Marc-O 0
what if i charged $100 for a hat or a tee-shirt ? Plus a free poker tournament ! ? ... also.. i heard a rumour that people can gamble with their own money as long as everyone has an equal chance at winning. You can get the $10 entry by calling it a "donation"...anyone know any truth to this ?by the way.. im not looking to profit by charging a fee..... it's just that hall's, table/chair rentals, projector rental's etc... don't exactly come for free....keep the knowledge rolling please...thanks again
mosley 0
you are not allowed to charge for anything, including refreshment charge, seat rental.....anything. if you could parlay the cost of the rake to these other things, everybody would do it. so far, they are one step ahead of you. sanemancrazywrld 0
what if i charged $100 for a hat or a tee-shirt ? Plus a free poker tournament ! ?Hey, great idea! With this novel concept, hookers can legalize themselves by charging for psychiatric advice, then giving a free blowjob. You can not legally run a cash poker tournament in Southern Ontario. There aren't going to be any cute shortcuts around the law on this one. Do it illegally if you feel like it, but you're not going to make it legal.

With this novel concept, hookers can legalize themselves by charging for psychiatric advice, then giving a free blowjob.Isn't that why they call themselves "escorts"?? lolThey say you pay for their "companionship" and then whateverhappens between consenting adults after that is between them, andnot part of a business transaction. It just so happens that they then proceed to fuck each and every one of their "companions".The law isn't fooled by them either. Vertigo 0
You can't take a registration fee/any type of rake, period. That is the bottom line. It does not matter what it is for. It is illegal. You can not take anything out of the prize pool. There is nothing further to divulge. That is Canadian law. One of our home game players works for the Liquor/Gaming commission as an inspector. He has assured us all of our games are completely legal. But what you are asking is not. Depending on the size of your town I'm sure the cops have better things to do. If you take an entry fee/ rake or sell anything its illegal. There's just no way around it. good luck.
