winter olympoics

Recommended Posts

Who likes 'em?Im a big fan actually -- but it seems like I might be one of the few.MUCH better than summer olympics, I say... with events like the downhill, moguls, short track skating...not a big fan of figure skating but that actually seems like the most popular event. Anyway, any other fans out there?

I don't like how the US had to manufacture some events for the Winter Olympics just so they could put up a good showing. The X-Games are slowly creeping into what used to be a somewhat watchable bit of sports on television.Except for curling.

Sooooooo, just because they have snowboarding, it's becoming X-games?It's just as much a sport as any of the other events. On a seperate note, I love watching curling. It requires technique, accuracy, strategy. It's like chess on ice. I guess I should let you know that I used to be a chess player.

I just think its very interesting that someone would devote their life to curling, or short track skating, or the any of that. Not knocking it, its just very interesting... whats their day to day life like? And how does one get into luge? Its not something you can just pick up and start like basketball or skiing. How do you even begin? And what about when you train for four years to be a short track skater, and the guy ahead of you wipes out and wrecks you? How does that feel? Thats sports is like poker, the best dont always win....Anyway, there's my random olympic thoughts.

how you begin something like luge, i have no idea.winter olympic sports don't necessarily take the same lifetime devotion as professional sports though. speed skaters for instance usually skate many events, so while it takes devotion, it is less likely that one mistake can destroy four years. and usually it is a shorter competition window. most athletes compete only at 1-2 games.and for some canadians, curling is just like baseball or hockey. its a sport you get into, and if you like it, you keep at it. most top juniors probably got into it through parents. i think most sports fall into one of those categories.seriously though, luge? i have no idea. i mean, we've all thought of sliding down a huge frozen waterslide on a sled, but what's the first time like? do the survivors make the olympics? :club: i think people who can watch curling without having a previous interest are true sports fans. it really is an excellent test of strategy, technique and shotmaking.i love the winter olympics. but i'm canadian so i think it's pretty much inborn.daniel

Were it just one event and not six (counting men's and women's), I might be more inclined to agree. And it's not so much the events as the mentality of athletes like, say, Bode Miller. Way too much hype, nowhere near enough performance. I don't have a problem with snowboarding being there now that it has been chosen, I'm just not a fan of it myself. I would have voted against it given the opportunity. On an unrelated note, how in the hell can the IOC remove baseball from the summer Olympics? I don't care if it's just amateurs playing, that has to be there.

I forgot to mention my favorite Winter Olympic sports.Number 1 is the Biathlon. I like how they combine the stregnth and endurance of cross country skiing with a completely skill related activity like shooting. That's something I can get into.Coming in 2nd is downhill skiing, but I have a condition here. I'm sure what they call it, but for me to be interested in this, the network has to show the "ghost" of the lead skier while the current skier is going downhill. That makes it seem like more of a real race. If they dont do that, then I'm not interested. And thats about all I can watch of the Winter Games.

f*** Bode Miller, the guy's an a$$hole. There are a lot of classy "X-gamers" out there, for instance, Shaun White, and he won the gold.Don't judge the group bc of Bode Miller, he's the exception, not the rule. I think that snowboard racing is kinda cool. Half pipe is pretty much standard, I'm not a huge fan of "sports" where it comes down to the judges, but it is something. I'd much rather see who is the fastest, strongest, toughest, and best. Not the person who most impresses judges.

True enough. I love how figure skating reconfigured their scoring system (adding points from 0 instead of subtracting from 6, among other things) and they're still having immense problems with consistency, like the pairs competition where the two completely bombed a quadruple throw and still received credit for a triple because of the rules. But...that's figure skating for you.The snowboard racing is pretty tight, I'll give you that. Half pipe I could do without though. The thing that bothers me the most about this Olympics is how we're having these "heroes" stuffed down our throats by the press (Miller, Michelle Kwan, Apolo Ohno, etc.) who haven't actually done anything. Isn't the whole point of the Olympics supposed to be the come-from-behind, against-the-odds kind of feel-good stories?
