Guys, there's no point in arguing with someone that's illogical. Those that are capable of making it playing online for a living will see that he's wrong.Btw, I technically do play online for a living, though I'm a FT college student. It pays tuition and all of my expenses at the moment.
I couldnt agree more....But comeon... his rebuttals are screaming FLAME... I can barely help myself at the absolute lack of quality in his responses...and want to call him out.... but youre right... just not worth it...
the conversation escalated, i don't blame him for "yelling", although there isno reason to fight about this.

Most of you seem to be young kids…(God I am jealous of that)..Anyway my advice is getting an education and a job. Build a career, get you life squared away and then take a shot if you want it…Once you have your life in order you can go play a 10/20 NLHM game and not be worried about your bankroll…if you are a winner you will have + cash flow that actually counts…If you want to have any type of life and family 1K a week winnings gets you NOTHING…You are going to need to make a minimum of 5K to support your free time and lifestyle, not to mention expenses and insurances….Good Luck
reasons why you cant live off 52k a yearPer Capita GDP is only $41,800 and you have to double that to fit into your suburbia communitygas priceswith current mortgage rates you could only get a $200,000 for about 1400 a month...Rent will cost you about the same... 19" Plasma Screens are still about $300 so you cant 20 table to increase your profitsYeah that $20,000 car payment that is about $400 a month really can bite you in the censored... throw in $100 to insure it and youre brokeWould have to play more online to make up the extra money to pay off your student loans at $15o a month so you wont be able to post your well thought and provocative inshights into the FCP community (that falls more into Oportunity Cost though)So for a house, car, insurance, gas, an extra monitor (or other $300 frivolous purchase once a month), and student loansyour monthly total is...(drumroll please)... $2350 a month.. oh wait I forgot to add utilities to that... lets throw in $150 for cable/internet you gotta have all the channels and $150 a month for electricity... youre up to $2650 a month... now we'll do the math here and multiply by 12 and get....$31,800 which leaves you with a grand total of $20,200 a year to spend on whatever you want... becuase hey you have a $200,000 house, a $20,000 car, a very nice monitor, and the god given right to post on FCP... please continue to assure us we need to make 5k a week to "support or free time and lifestyle"....
Uh, I see you live in the US. Forgot a very minor thing called taxes. If you are making that type of money without a "job", might be a good idea to claim that and not end up with the IRS up your bootie.

I am 20 a full time college student and I play for a living.I play 3/6 and 5/10nl, Sngs that range from 200-500$ and then MTTs that range anywhere from 10$ regular tournies to 100$ rebuys and the sundays. I have played about a year, I deposited 75$ and just grinded it up from there. I have probally paid all of my bills with poker for the last 6 months, because it took me that long to work my br up to where I could actually cash out and pay for things.

Sorry I was to busy with having life to bother posting this weekend. I'm glad that you guys have it planned and under budget. I never should have figured you would be mature enough to understand. I hope you all clean up your .5/1.00 games. I would have more to say but I'm still busy counting the 6K I made on sat. night...I bought in for 1k of money I don't need but use as a poker stash becuase it is fun...Grind on wise men and enjoy the trailers. If you get on rush maybe you can step up to a double wide model...I hear they are all the rage in the Midwest. The farm animals can't push them over as easy...

Just as an aside for Chuck, he actually made, 15,350.He won the 15k playing 5/10 NL--went, got drunk and played some .10/.25 NL--ran that up to 150 before giving it back, bought back in again, and then played one of the guys HU for his whole bankroll, and stacked him for 400. That is all.Sincerely, ChuckSty's Secretary

And while ChuckSty's Secretary was hung over and still asleep, ChuckSty also played some 50/100 LHE. He didn't have a MTT cash that day.Regards,ChuckSty's Cyber Groupie

Damn, 15K in one session of 5/10 is huge. When I was rolling high back in November, the biggest win I ever had playing 5/10 was about 4,500. Of course, I don't usually play cash games for more than two or three hours online without taking a break. How long did you play for?

it's cuz chuck is sexy....As for me. I live @ home now and go to school. Over the summer all I did was playing poker $100NL and/or 3/6 short handed and did decent back then. I always struggled with bankroll management though, and that really held me back.I took a fairly big loss in one session and decided to quit online cause I thought I was developing bad habits and would be smart to save the rest of my bankroll and just get a 'job' for a few months to come back down to reality and the such. I really am lucky to be living at home and not having to worry about bills, such as rent, etc, etc...I worked a job for a few months, made some cool friends, but hated the job. While still working I decided to go back to my "roots", lol, and do a minimum deposit of $50 and play $50 NL and build a roll again. I told myself if I ever play out of my bankroll again I'm quitting and I've stuck to that.I'm back up to $100NL now and I've made (with this month included) over $3500, nearing 4k, since December.I'm playing HU games now which is pretty sick with the swings, but it's enjoyable and it's been treating me well. I don't have a 'job' now, but I consider poker something that I treat as a job, although I do not get 40 hours in a week. Usually 20-30, sometimes less.I try to keep school as my number one priority, just as I would if I had a "real job". But poker gives me a lot of freedom with my time...so I can study whenever I want, workout daily, and hang out with friends as needed.I would like to move out again, but right now I don't think it's going to happen for a while. I like to travel and probably will be using some of the money I'm making now, to do so over the summer...and I'm just not looking to move out of home if I'm going to be living out of the USA for a substantial amount of time.My goal is to make 20k in 2006 playing part-time. I rarely play MTTs, mostly just cash games, but I may add a few of the mid-range buy in tournies every week or so.There is a lot of good advice in this thread....One thing I learned from experience playing...back in June/July/August when I was solely playing poker, I had no idea what I was doing. I understood poker decent enough to beat other idiots, but I was a lost cause...fundamentally. Stuey Ungar once said that no one could beat him at cards, he only beat himself. That isn't completly true for myself, sometimes you do get outplayed, but I really beat myself a lot back over the summer. Holding yourself back in poker is one of the hardest things to get over. At least for me...poker is a real mental, emotional, game...that you need to learn to stay on an even keel with.As I said above, if I played outta my bankroll I was quitting. I havn't played out since coming back and I've been making the most consistent, substantial money I ever had since I started playing poker back in the day. I can only think of where I "could" be now, had I learned this earlier.--One thing I really think is important for playing poker for a living is doing it cause you love the game. Have a passion for it, and I think you'll succeed. As in anything, the people that are the elite of "it" are usually the one who have a great passion for it.GL.- Jordan

I grind out some $$ every week playing .50/1 and 1/2(limit and NL). Sometimes I play 2/4 and 3/6 just when I see a table that looks interesting. I also B & M a few times a month. When I look at the end of every month I seem to be up between $200-$500 which doesn't seem like much for the time, but is better than nothing.....or yeah...I agree with the balloon guy.I am not a poker player..I play poker for fun.I ran my own business for 20 years paid for a commercial building, 3 houses in southern california and sent 2 kids through college. If I could send any advice from my experience.......enjoy being young and have fun, but use your energy to start your own business, and do it in something you can do for years, not a fad.Play poker in your spare time until you are secure. There are some guys that can actually make it ...I don't question Custom and some others that I have seen demonstrate some awesome talent on the tables, but overall it has to be a tough grind that will have a heavy downside.Use your brain as much as your emotion.........and GL

I don't play pro but I am on a simliar mission like Smash's...I think I saw someone metion he tried to turn 50 into 1000...Last July I decided to be very dedicated to all of the BR rules and regulations so I deposited 100 on PP to play .50-1 Limit HE (knowing that I would deposit 200 more if I lost)...since then having a full time job and fulltime girlfriend (I think she made it harder to play than my work) I have just last night gotten it up to 1617.I strictly play LHE, I am playing 2-4 right now, I switched over to fulltilt from PP to get the 100% deposit bonus in January, I put 470 in and have received 320 from the bonus', but I also cashed out 270 from PP when I made the transfer...so technically my true bankroll, without all of the bonus' is at 1617!! lol...the bastards at epassporte took 30 to deposit 500...my ultimate goal is to play 10-20...so I am trying to get up to 6,000 online...hopefully since I was able to increase my bank roll by 1600% in half a year, this year will be promising...knock on woodMatt

Came in 2nd last night in the Doyle's Room $5,000 rebuy..after giving everyone at work a piece, I am getting the coolest cigar humidor filled with 30 LaGlorai Cubana's. This thing is awesome, individual trays with individualslots for the cigars. the cigars are like 8 x 58...which is huge.I am salivating as I think about it. And only $700 for both the humidor AND the cigars. I own 2 humidors now, but I'll find somewhere to put it.If you guys were around I'd share one with you.Now I really think if I was young I'd give this a serious shot. But the truth is my patience level would screw me up with BR management. I envy you guys that can control yourselves this way. The word grind though really makes my skin crawl.

Well, my two cents on this are that $50K really isn't much. You can certainly get by on that (especially in some less expensive parts of the country), but it's not going to leave you much wiggle room when you factor in taxes, misc expenses, etc..While $50K SOUNDS like a lot of money to some of you younger folks, I can bear witness that life gets considerably pricier and more complex as you get older, have children, etc.. The guy who said you needed $5K to live is a nutjob, of course. But $1K a week is living pretty thin. People do it, but I can guarantee you that very few of these people feel like they're living off the fat of the land (to quote Steinbeck and the OT).However, that said, everyone has different needs and your mileage may vary on this. I certainly wouldn't dissuade anyone on this forum from trying to live a dream. If you are young and have no dependents, then what the heck? Just wanted to put in my few words on this as a guy in his late 30s with a family. We live in a place that is not terribly expensive to live and don't live a lavish lifestyle at all. But $50K a year would be a real grind to try and make it on.Also, as an employer (I own my own company), my only caution would be that taking yourself out of the job market for extended periods of time could potentially cause you some grief later in life when you try and re-enter the working world. And, realisitically, 90% of the people who try and play poker for a living are going to eventually stop -- either from going broke, burning out, or reaching a place where they need more stable income than being a professional card player can provide for most people. Finally, how worried are you folks who play online for living expenses about the current and ongoing attempts to outlaw online gambling? Seems like it has quite a few people in the poker world pretty shook up this time.

well first off i'd like to say i have a lot of respect for those of you doing this for a living because it seems like it would be the ultimate grind. i have played poker for about 5 years but for the most part live and only for a few months was i playing to pay the rent. my online play for the past 3 years has been horrendous mainly because i would turn $50 into about $500-$600 then cash out half and with the remaining money play way over my bankroll and blow it all. while i always made a profit i was always having to start from the bottom every time i busted out which got pretty depressing. i took a long break from online play until i had a serious discussion with a buddy of mine who's been extremely successful playing online. his main point to me was that if i wasn't playing within my bankroll i would always go broke and that this was my biggest problem. after this discussion i decided to take the plunge one more time and put $200 on poker room and clear the bonus. for some reason something finally clicked in my head about bankroll management and i think the bonus kind of kept me in check and heading towards a goal. i rolled the initial $200 into a little over $900 after clearing the bonus and moved that roll to eurobet to try to clear that bonus. its been a little under a month since the initial $200 and i've rolled it up to $1650 and probly have another month of play before i clear the $600 bonus from eurobet. i finally got a second monitor/graphic card so i could run duals and have settled into 8 tabling after a shakey start. i would attribute most of my new found online success to proper bankroll management and this lesson getting hammered into me by many of the vets on fcp, so a big thanks to you all of you. i'm a full time student and have a day job so i can't see playing full time but hopefully i can roll it up to 5k by this summer and play online instead of keeping my current job! anyways i know this was a long ass post but i just wanted to let the vets at the forum know that all of their preaching was doing some good. one question i have for anyone who's multi tabling is what are the bankroll requirements for 8 tabling? i know that its 30(well 50 if you listen to HL) buy ins for single tabling nl but i've never heard what the recommended bankroll was for multi tabling. -steal

Hey steal....good job. Good luck with that. I will give you a tip....DO NOT specialize....I have found that if you don't specialize...you can cheat variance....well...as well as anybody "can" cheat variance.Learn all the games. Scout out the softest games...at any level and focus a window on that game.Be a Vulcher. Good luck.
