getting into the mind of your opponent

Recommended Posts

Having played micro NL cash games a lot over the past few weeks, i've found quite a bit of patterns in the type of players that play at that level:1. The Fish: This player simply plays online poker for fun. Doesn't really have any technique. Chases gutshots until the river, bluffs at innapropriate times, and thinks a flush draw is always a drawing hand, even if it's a 5 high draw.2. The 'noob': This player is generally new to online poker, and has a decent amount of skill from live play. He hasn't gotten used to the volume of hands played per hour yet, but is working on it.3. The "master": This player tries to make very tricky and complicated plays on people, only because he can afford the loss if our hero actually calls him down. Usually berates play when finally called down w/ a draw and outdrawn.4. The grinder: Like me (at least i would believe i fall in this category), this is the player that has a general understanding of poker. He plays position well, knows pot odds, doesn't get too crazy unless his table image permits it. He may lose a buy in here or there, but in the long run, he has profits from this limit.Anyone think of any other personalities you've seen at micro limits? Feel free to describe em... forgot about "drunk, high" and "underage".

The Stoned Underage Drunkard - plays way above his bankroll...will chase anything...misspells words in the chat box...bluffs constantly...sits out a lot when making frequent bathroom trips...spills cheetos dust on his keyboard.

The Resentful Loser:Goes on and on about how he lost his entire bankroll the day before at the higher limits and is now rebuilding. Keeps talking strategy making himself seem like the god of internet poker. Usually over the session he proceeds to lose "what was left" of his roll. He always leaves by sayin he will just deposit the 4K into the acct tomorrow.

I agree, this one is pretty common.

Don't forget about the Micro Limit Pros.Constantly talks strategy at the table, but ignores all his tid bits of information.Plays every single hand regardless of position and bluffs constantly! Then gets beat with a good hand and tells you how bad of a player you are, then he reloads and we take him for that buy in too.

The Professor. Likes to berate the fish telling them how bad they played and what they should have done better. Luckly he's usually also a moron with no idea how to play. That guy that keeps buying in for the minimum every other hand, usually the same guy that's always all in in the limit games.
