how could i have played this better?

Recommended Posts

Hand happened earlier this week.1/2 NL, bought in for $200, up to around $245.I'm dealt A-10 o/s 2 under the gun, it folds to me so I limp, UTG folds, button is a SUPER LOOSE player, took $50 off him just 3 hands prior when he called me down with bottom pair. He calls, SB folds and BB checks.Flop comes 4-A-10 rainbow. BB checks, I bet $20, loose guys calls, and BB folds. I have no read on this guys, as he can play anything at all, he could very well have 4-10!Turn is another 10. I check it, trying to get a read, which is where I'm sure my mistake is. Loose guy checks as well.River is a 9, I check it, loose bets 20, I raise it to 50 and he goes all in and he has me covered. What would you do? Give me come feedback and I'll give you the results later!!!Edit: I was actually 2 off the button, not 2 under the gun. My bad, see post below.

Just asking what you would do when he rasied you all in? And no, there was no flush possibilies on the board :-)

I was saying that in reference to rounders when it was AA vs A9 on a A99XX board.I dont see how you cant call? if the only thing you cant beat is aces, and thats what he holds it was fate and just move on and try to recoup your losses

Here is my play of the hand. You bet 20 into a less than 10 dollar pot and he calls? When the 10 hits, I bet 20 again. On the river I bet 40 to see what he does. When he goes all in, I beat him on the pot. Why are you checking to a guy who called you down with bottom pair? You need to bet.

Worst hand ever.A. Fold preflop. You will lose more money playing crap like A-T offsuit in early position....trust me. B. If you're gonna play it...RAISE!! Don't limp with A-T offsuit in early position...IF you really really feel the need to play it..raise and be aggressive.C. Flop seems fine to me.D. Turn.....checking here just screams monster to me......but against a fish it might be smart. I would bet 1/2 the pot though....play big hands just like ordinary hands I say...E. Horrible check on the river.......you are lucky your opponent bet. You should bet 1/3 to 1/2 the pot.....and you shouldn't hesitate to put all your money in. No way he has you beat.........

I like to play some of the middle hands sometimes, see if I get lucky, especially at a loose table. Just thought I got lucky this time though. I checked on the river cause I knew (or thought) that this guy would be with anything here trying to steal. There was no way I was thinking he had A's. I was actually 2 off the button, not 2 UTG, I always mix those two up, so I was in late position. My bad. I always think that UTG is first to act for some dumb reason, like "under the gun, so you'd better hurry up". Stupid, I know.

well...in late position A-10 becomes more playable..but if everyone folded to you, then you should have raised instead of limped. You got lucky that time, but what happens when you just flop one pair of aces?? You won't be NEAR as confident in your hand...and you'll probably end up paying off Aces with bigger kickers and probably won't make very much those times that you do actually have the best hand.

I would've thought the same thing until I considered:1. He was raised all in holding the 2nd nuts2. He asked what he should've doneFrom that it is known you were beat. As long as you are in this hand after the turn, I see no way for you to avoid getting all of your money in the pot here. It happens, and the guy is lucky you hit the case ace on the flop or he probobly gets paid very little with his aces.

part 1. when you use "lucky" twice to describe your play, you need a new gameplanpart 2. are you being sarcastic?

preflop i could see making a case for all 3 choices so im not gonna say anything about the limp. Your bet on the flop was pretty big, i dont know if i wouldve bet so much. I'm also definitely betting the turn if this guy is a loose player and will call me down with anything. If player will call you with horrible hands you have to stop slowplaying and bet it so that they are able to call you with those horrible hands. Bet more on the river, insta-call.

I would really like to know the answer to part 2. Until then, my side is hurting.

nhl were you playing 6 man or 10 man table? If it was ten men I would never recommend raising A 10, not a winning play. Secondly there was no way you could have avoided that outcome other than folding. If you were playing a six man table I wouldn't even consider the fact you called with A 10 that bad.Don't beat yourself over these hands, they just happen. I mean especially against that clown it's not like your ever going to fold. Only way to save yourself was folding A 10 preflop, which isn't the worst play. However lets consider you did raise. You raise 4x preflop here. People that limp with AA usually might just call here or one over your raise. They are not typically going to come way over the top of you. Especially like you described him as a calling station. So he one overs you, you are forced to call because you raised your A 10, same results exactly.Folding preflop was your only salvation against someone who plays their aces like that.

Even though the results didn't turn out to be in your favor, there is ABSOLUTELY NO reason to fold or even consider folding the second nut even to the 'tightest of the tight'. Your full house is very strong, and you should beat any opponent into the pot in this situation.Despite what 80% of the people on this forum will tell you, Hold'em is not a game of the nuts. If your hand is strong but not the best possible and you have great reasons to think it is best, then put your money in. Ask yourself a question, if you can't make a stand with that hand, when will you make a stand? And if you are unable to make that stand, how do you plan on making money in No-Limit.[/i]

I severely doubt that even FIVE percent of the NLH players on this forum would tell you that "holdem is a game of/about the nuts." WTF!?!!?The rest of what you said is correct though. Never fold this. Never. Flat out.

That's what I thought, and of course he had AA's.  Tripped me out man!  I guess I 'm wondering what I could have done different to save myself some chips.
Nothing, you are doomed to loose all your chips on this hand if thats what this guy wants. Sorry. Pick up and move on to the next hand. You win some, you lose some!!!

Under the gun is the first to act......don't like how you played the hand by the way...in late position it's a marginal move to limp, better raise to steal the blinds. There is no way you can think your opponent has aces, and if you think everytime you don't have the nuts you shouldn't raise, you shouldn't play poker. If the guy is loose you should of be the turn and not check. Also, if you said he is a loose player and would call with bottom pair, you should NOT check the river as he would check it right behind you hoping you have K Q or something. He wouldn't raise with bottom pair, unless he is a total moron. As to him having the Aces, he played them very secretively, you still had to go all in because it's profitable in the long run. P.S. this is like the hand from The Rounders, when Mat damon had A 9 and KGB had the aces with A 99 board.

You are probably right, but it honestly sickens me when I see someone write on this forum that they folded a hand because it was just "one pair ( since when was that the whole description of a hand?) Sometimes "one pair" can be damn strong, and sometimes two pair is worthless. I get the feeling lots of players online look at some kind of chart thats starts with 1.)One pair 2.)Two pair 3.) Three of a kind etc.etc. And the further they go on that list the more they feel they should bet or call. The problem with this train of thought is that it specifically neglects the numerical value in your cards. Another problem with this train of thought is that in hold'em sometimes weak hands win, and very strong hands lose. With the the chart philosiphy you are not going to get maximum value on your 'weak' hands and you are going to lose the maximum on your strong hands when they are beat.
