phily ivey not marketable? racial?

Recommended Posts

Phil has a great personality, when he is playing cards, when he feels comfortable. Phil is a top notch needler, showing he has a sense of humor. Barry Greenstein once said "these tournament players do commercials, appearances, ect. They make between 100k and 300k to do so. It takes days sometimes to get these things done. If they were truely the best players in the world, why not sit in the big game, and make that much or more, everyday?"I think Phil would agree with Barry, its not worth it to him....yetIf Phil could make millions though with some sort of endorsement deal, he would.I think Daniel and maybe Howard Lederer are different in that they can play in the big game, but because they are so popular, it is worth their time. Phil Hellmuth too, its worth his time.

If Allen Iverson and "The Birdman" are marketable, Phil Ivey is Coca Cola's wet dream. Maybe he just doesn't want to deal with all that? No, it's blatant racism--that's it. I'm sure he's never been approached by any large companies to promote their product or write any poker books.Call Jesse Jackson, see if he'll march on the Bellagio to get this resolved.

You've actually got it all completely backwards.  The fact that Phil is young and black makes him 10 times more marketable than a white guy.
I don't necessarily agree with this statement based on the core poker playing demographic. The market poker related products are after are 18-49 white males. IMHO

Its probably George Bush's fault somehow
George Bush hates poker players.
And Kanye West (does Kanye even play poker?)
I'm gonna say he doesn't play poker, based on the fact that he makes more money rapping/producing than he ever could at poker.

I played holdem with an old man at Borgata recently who claimed that about 10 years ago he played $5-$10 stud with Phil Ivey everyday at the Taj. He said he spoke with Phil Ivey while he was in AC in 2004 for the 10K buyin tourney and Phil told him that since he had moved to Las Vegas he was up 17 million dollars. He also said Phil lost over a million at the craps table the same day.Who knows if there is truth to this, but the man didn't seem to have any reason to make this up, he just told me when the dealer brought up Phil Ivey

Yeah.Good post. I love when those Mexicans chase. And then when they miss I push all my chips in to the middle and scream, "Guacamole, mother fucker!"..pure ignorance.

Are you serious? This type of thinking is detrimental to your poker game. If anyone read that Gigabet thread and his post about Success and the right way to think about poker, he explains it beautifully. Don't come into games with a predetermined mindset of every player based on stereotypes. You never know what curveball someone is gonna throw at you. It's best to just observe everyone and every hand as intently as possible and form your opinions based on their play/actions. Hmm, my sarcasm detector is off tonight... I dunno if this post was necessary.

Phil Hellmuth too, its worth his time.He has no choice. He used to be good at tournaments - not anymore, so that's dried up for him as income. And he's never been a good cash game player at the high limits. Trading off his poker brat image is all he has left. Might as well milk that cow for all she has....The core audience of poker is predominantly male of European descent, and yet Phil Ivey is generally held in exceptionally high regard by anyone who has any inkling of what goes on in this world. You could say the same about golf and yet there is no player more respected in the game today than Tiger Woods. If there were racism at work, would Woods and Ivey get this kind of obviously deserved respect? Doubtful. Why do so many people hold Ivey in high regard? The answer is simple - he is almost universally acknowledged as a great tournament and cash game player and he doesn't act like a buffoon in public. He may not be loved as much as some of the more colorful (no pun intended) characters in poker are, but there are also fewer people who dislike him.

Honestly I think Phil Ivey could care less. Anytime he is asked about being famous, he says "I don't look at myself as a celebrity, I look at myself as a poker player." If I had to guess, this is one reason why Phil is so successful. The man seems to have unlimited focus at the poker table. Also, has anyone seen any poker player on TV endorsing a non poker related commodity? I know I have not seen one.If Phil were to come out with a book or DVD explaining his madness, then I'd be one of the first in line to purchase it.
