radiator leak on my car - help

Recommended Posts

I have to fix a radiator leak. I bought this K & W Permanent Metallic Block Seal. Directions say to flush my radiator out really good with water until it's completely clear when it drains. Then it says to mix the K & W Seal with 3 quarts of water and fill the radiator with it. Then it says to idle the car for 30 minutes and then stop it and let it cool and remove radiator cap and open the drain to drain it all out. Then it says to allow all that to dry for 24 hours with the radiator cap and drain open. What do you think ? I've never opened the drain before so that is the only challenge that I see. I've put in an alternator before and a starter and I've changed my oil but that's about it.

What do you mean what do we think? Are you serious? Just do what it says! Exactly how codependent on this forum are you?

I think you should switch to NWP.

lol. I like to share things that are happening in my life with everyone in the forum. If I was getting laid, I'd let everyone know.

I manage an auto repair shop, so I could be called in court as an 'expert witness', although they would need to be really deperate for an expert. This is what you should do. Don't use that crap, it will just waste a bunch of time, and not work. Buy a new radiator, you should have a shop somewhere near your house that sells only radiators, which means they will usually have the best prices. Next call around and ask different shops how much it would be to install a radiator that you are supplying. Next, take car to said shop. Wait 1 hour. Drive car home.

hahaha. That sounds good. It says "Permanent" on the label so I figured it was like cement or something. I have no idea how a radiator works, though. How much are radiators? My car is a 4 cylinder. I won't give the type of car, though because you guys will laugh at me.

That's disturbing on so many levels.

Well, considering that the price depends on the make/model, you're either going to have to tell us what you're driving or suck it up and actually talk to someone on the telephone at the parts store/mechanic. For a 4-banger you're probably looking at less than a hundred for a used radiator or $250+ for a new one.

I'm no "mechanic" but my dad's a farmer and my uncle and grandpa are pretty good with engines, and from my years of listening, if it's not that bad of a leak an egg and some black pepper should do good. You just put it in the radiator.

If that isn't what you've been trying to accomplish with every post you've ever made then you're beyond help. Put cement in your rad.

$250 isn't too bad. If my car was leaking antifreeze, does it have to be the radiator or can it be something else? I think I remember a while back that a repair shop said that I had a bent head gasket or something. I ignored them and continued to use my car. Strangely, it was the same repair shop that was also giving me a radiator flush and now I have a radiator leak.

I'm not a mechanic, but, I found the problem.

I had this problem with my old jeep. The radiator had a whole in it created by the mold. They had to buy a new part and put it together. the mechanic charged me $210 for it since we go there all the time. all other places were $230-$270. teneightbtw, dont use that thing you were going to do. waste of time and money

It could be a head gasket problem if your getting a little fluttering in the engine. I had this problem a couple months ago. Car would overheat, and flutter, resovoir would be empty every couple of days. Took it to a guy I know and he said it was proly (probably) the head gasket. Fixed that, but car still overheated. There was a leak in the radiatior, so I had this replaced.I can't believe I put all this into my undercover commuter car: 1995 civic dx hatchback, that I haven't washed since, I think last fall :club:

Had the same problem with mine, a Mazda 323, hatchback baby. Look, if your radiator is leaking, it's probably just one of the tanks that is cracked. There is one on top and one on bottom and they are usually made of tough plastic but they can crack and leak. You should be able to take the radiator out yourself and take it to a shop. They can pressure test it there and spot the leak. If it's a tank, it shouldn't be that much to repair it unless they're ripping you off. 50 bux max. Me, my tank was cracked but I bought a brand new Aluminum radiator off Ebay for 90 dollars, you should be able to snag one for a lot less than 250 dollars! It's not that tough to replace either, if you can do an alternator a radiator is not a lot harder. Go to your local auto store, and buy a Haynes repair manual for your make and model car. This book could save you hundreds in bogus repair costs because it tells you exactly how to fix anything in your car. A radiator just needs to be unscrewed and disconnected. Here's a tip, when installing your new radiator, don't unscrew anything off the new radiator, you can connect it using the rubber hoses and the clamps that are connected to your tranny. If you unscrew the tranny cooler line, you'll run the risk of stripping the screws and creating a leak that cannot be fixed except by replacing the tranny cooler tube and various parts. Pray that it is not your head gasket. That could be costly and you definately can't do that one on your own.Good Luck.

Thanks guys. Pct10s was right on the money. That is exactly what my car is doing. It's overheating and reservoir is empty in 3 days. The engine is fluttering a little bit if you mean that it is idling bad. It doesn't idle bad necessarily when it is just sitting still but if I drive it and then stop at a stop light, it seems to take about 10 seconds to recover like it needs air or something. Maybe I should check the air filter. Hell, I've barely looked at the car this whole year. I really never liked the car all that much. Next car I get will be automatic because I'm sick of stick-shift.

Yeah, mine would start to flutter when I would be at a light or stopped in traffic. You could be looking at a head gasket problem. Mine was like $550 to repair and that is low. Good Luck.

Well, why would a head gasket make your antifreeze leak? I just don't get it.
it wouldn't, it was two different problems, that occurred at the same time. But, you would use more antifreeze because the bad head gasket would allow it to leak into the engine I believe, and cause the fluttering, and white smoke coming out of the exaust. I believe that is what the person I took my car to said.

did you just junk it or did you keep it?

This sounds like you have two diffenent problems. Fluttering at a red light could mean you need a new fuel filter. Too see if your rad. is leaking. Take it too a machine shop. They can tell if it is leaking. If it is, they wouldnt charge you more than $50 to fix it. If it is real bad, then you have too get a new one. When you park your car, do you have antifreeze on the ground???Does your car overheat when you drive???
