jeff_536 3
My sons are 2 and almost 5.a few years yet for the little one, but the older one, matthew, is fascinated when i play online.Of course, anytime he sees an ace in my hand, he thinks i'm gonna win (apparently i'm raising a fish who'll play any Axo).right now I quiz him on hand rank...what's higher, a flush or a straight? three of a kind or two pair? He's pretty much got it down (better than his mom), so i think the next step will be some simple five card draw...no worrying about reading the board. So i'd say 4 1/2 is about the right age to begin the fundamentals. The Future 0
My little girl is 4 months old yesterday. She sat in my lap when she was about 2 months while I was playing my home game one night. I was dealt JJ and ended up with Quad J's. So I can always tell her that she got quad J's on the first hand she ever played. She watches me play online and all the poker TV shows and really pays attention, it's amazing. I will definitely teach her how to play when she is old enough to sit at the table on her own. Nothing wrong with growing up playing poker and cards. I've been playing since way back and I didn't turn out to be a low life cheater or anything... oops, did I say "cheater", sorry.

elkang 0
I played poker when I was a child. I have a number of friends who did so as well with their families. It worked out well for us.I would play with my children. Better to show them the world with your guidance than shelter them and have them discover it without you.Of course, I am not a pro. If I was I might have a different attitude like Doyle did with his son Todd.
Griff 0
My oldest will be 6 this summer, she likes to watch me play online. I will play her and her 3 year old sister for their allowance every now and then. Of course I cheat when we play.
digitalmonkey 929
I have a daughter who will be 2 at the end of March and a 6 month old son. My daughter is more interested in Dora the Explorer. She will approach the computer when I play online, but it's only with the hope that I will go to www.nickjr.com . My son watches the screen occasionally when I play. As with any other extracurricular activity that has the potential to become a career (golf, hockey, swimming) I will let them take the lead and offer support and guidance only when they have initiated the interest. Although we do have to provide the initial exposure.

Probably 90% of the time. That always follows, "Oh, how cute!" or course -Proud Dad
Lucy 0
I was just wondering which forum members have children and when/if they will teach them how to play poker? My 16 year daughter and myself play Texas Hold'em for fun almost every night. It's usually just the two of us, but sometimes my husband will play. The best is when we're playing on the couch and watching it on TV at the same time. I think having a game that we both love to play keeps us close, and as anybody who has teenagers knows, anything that will keep you close to your kid is a good thing. As much as Daniel is my favorite pro to watch, hers is Gus Hansen.
sportsbettingman 0
I've got two boys...4 and 2 years old.I'm using cards as a way to teach math to the 4 year old.I started out by playing "war" with one card...now we play with two...and use two card flushes and straights for power ranks...beating out non-paired high cards. Plan to work my way up to 3 cards, 4 and 5...until he can play poker. I'll play with him whenever he wants to play it.I agree not to force it.~Lance
Eclypse 0
"...rarely pay attention to anything unless it is cartoons "I am wrestling with this personal demon myself. I just can't stop watching cartoons. If there was a channel that played nothing but the Simpsons and Family Guy, I'd watch nothing else.
fryer98 30
Here's a thread that was about this subject:http://www.fullcontactpoker.com/poker-foru...3939&highlight=I don't have kids (one's that have proven to be mine, that is! ) , but I don't see a problem in teaching them it when they show interest. But, teaching them not to play for money, etc.
Julz 0
I have three children. 17 (boy), 15(girl), 12(boy). Our whole family plays poker. I've played since I was 12. Mom played poker on rainy days when she couldn't golf! :-) I filled in when one of the mom's had to leave. We bought the Hoyle Casino and Hoyle Card Games CD for fun interaction on the computer when the kids were smaller. My oldest son plays in mini-tourneys on the weekends with his friends. I'd rather have them at my house playing cards for a $10 buy-in than running all over the roads looking for something to do. Being a parent of teenagers is scary!
Petoria 0
I made my first bet when i was in kindergarten, $5 that the Blue Jays would beat the Phillies in the World Series. I won that bet, and not long after that I began playing poker on the bus every morning and actually I won kids lunch money, once my friend was so far into the pot that I actually won the deck of cards we were playing with. I didnt think anything of it, we were only 6. I think my parents were a little bit worried though.

Being a parent of teenagers is scary!Exactly. We have a pool table downstairs and she loves to play pool also. I've been told that I'm bringing her up improperly, but she doesn't do drugs, she doesn't drink and she's not pregnant, like some of the kids in her grade.I think I'm doing ok...and yes, it IS scary. I've been on the sidelines as the youth worker dealing with teens and parents way too much. Any parent who spends time with their teens or even having them home with their friends is a good thing. pbwl11 0
A couple that I play a home game with have a 4 year old son who will just sit at the table in his dads lap and watch us as we play. He can call out the hands, knows "all in", "over the top" and all the lingo! Sometimes, his dad will ask if how he should play this hand, and he'll always answer "all in!" (a couple times, it actually worked!.lol). They bought him the holdem television game, and he plays that in his room. He'll come running in to tell us how he won with "a set", "full house" etc. It's so cool to watch how excited he gets. lol
augmented 0
i'm 16 and i have no kids, but i've been playin poker for maybe 9 months and it is pretty much my main hobby besides music. i do 5 and 10 dollar buy-in tourneys, and my parents agree that its much better than going out to god knows where and shooting heroin in shady alleys, collapsing in the gutters in drunken stupors, etc etc etc.the cool thing is that my dad used to be a professional poker player (not that he was well-known, just that that's how he supported himself), and so we always talk about it when i'm playing, we discuss hands, he yells at me when i raise with 89 off, i mean he really makes me want to improve my game. so yeah, i guess for the kids its totally cool to play poker, its not like i'm doing drugs you know? so we're all chill with it. i kinda want my dad to get in the tourneys tho, i've never played with him for real stakes. cashmoneymomma 0
Yep, I have 2 boys and you better believe they will learn poker :-) (that is if they want to)My oldest is 4 and he gets out my WPT chip set and plays blackjack and poker. We were playing blackjack the other day and we asked him how much he wanted to bet. He said "Momma, I'm all in!" I just about died. He has always loved cards so as long as he is interested I will teach him. I can't wait until I have a buddy to practice with. :-)

BigMike 0
I a have a 3 year old son.He has autism, but does like to play with cards. He is very bright, so I am hopeful I can teach him the game someday. In 15 years he may just be crushing the online limit games! Good post, nice to hear about other people's families and life sometimes.Shaun
