should the wpt produce a pot-limit omaha event

Recommended Posts

I've been thinking about this, so I figured I would post it for discussion. I think it would be neat if the World Poker Tour were to follow suit of ESPN in airing different games on television. I think the best way to go about it would be to create a Pot-limit Omaha CHAMPIONSHIP event (not just one of those preliminary events like the ones that preceed the big no-limit hold'em events) with like a 10,000 buy in to give it the prestige of the many No-limit Hold'em events today. I think it would draw great interest from the players especially the all the European players that specialize in pot-limit omaha, which brings me to another point of where it should be held. Perhaps the Aviation club in Paris, would be a great place to host it because of its location and its elegance which kinda goes along with playing Omaha. Please post your opinions and thoughts, I think this would be great for poker in spreading different games. Who knows maybe Mr. Berman will linger across this post someday lol!.. thanks, --Mickey

I think that they should add 5 events to the schedule. one more Limit HE event, two stud events, and two Omaha event. You wouldn't even need to add any venues. You could have the one of the stud events at Foxwoods, one of the Omaha events at the Aviation club, and the rest of the events at teh Bellagio in the April tournaments if they go back next year from doing all NLHE. I'd like to see it

You would definitely see less amatuer players at the final table. I think it would also favor cash game pros vs. tournament specialists.

One of the big reason's that Texas Hold 'Em is the TV event of choice is that it is easy to follow. Only two cards per player, plus the board. As you get to Omaha, things RAPIDLY get more complicated, visually. ESPN did a nice job of getting good graphics to describe the action, but even then I found the Omaha events tough to follow, and I know how to play that game! Stud is even worse. Granted, I like the games, but they don't make for nearly as good television as Texas Hold 'Em.Remember the WPT formula: Plausibly live coverage, aimed at entry level viewers, with as much "real play" as possible. This is not to say that if there WERE an Omaha broadcast I would not be first in line to add to my TiVo and I wouldn't watch it repeatedly (I am still TRYING to get some valuable knowledge from ESPN's broadcast) I just don't see a producer deciding that it makes really good television.

Omaha is very difficult to follow, and I personally play the game for money. It takes like ten minutes -- i'm exagerating -- to look at the four cards and figure out all of players draw. Regardless, this idea is not bad and I actually wouldn't mind seeing a stud or omaha event on tv. But just one! Also, about limit hold 'em. I love the game, but it's not extremely fun to watch on TV. Limit hold 'em is all odds and math which often results in there being an easy decision to make all the time, especially with professionals. The Party Poker event is the only Limit event the WPT needs.

I'll do ya one better...I think they should televise an Omaha hi-lo event. I love Hold 'em, but it's getting to be overkill as far as TV goes. Hold 'em is the new five card draw. People are beginning to forget that there are other games out there. Actually, now that I think about it, a HORSE event would be fun to watch too.
