thinking of giving up poker

Recommended Posts

Anyone ever feel like this?
Yup!! I am not really sick of poker it's more of being sick of bad poker players. You get used to the bad beats but the bad play seems to be getting brutal lately. I would rather play with players who know at least some of the advanced techniques in poker rather than some beginner. And I can't go up high enough in limits to get away from these bad players. Just getting annoying.
Why is it that poker is the only type of sport(sport may not be the right word but you get the drift) That people think that playing better competition will be easier to win?? I just dont get it. Its like saying I would rather play the Pistons then my 3rd and 4th grade team.I think what he is saying is something like if it where a basketball game he would rather play with a guy that would shoot 10-15 times a game and make 50-60% rather than a guy who shoots 50 times from all over the court and misses most of the time but the one time he makes it makes you want to rip his nails off one by one because the shot was from half court with 15 minutes left in the game.

Every once in a while I take a little break for a week or two if I think my play is getting stail. It's usually after I've been playing constantly for a while and have a bad day or two, a lot of times bad beats, but sometimes its because I've been playing to much and am not being creative and falling into a pattern. Usually it helps me, I step away for a bit read a little and watch some poker on tv over the time and when I come back I'm rejuvinated and usually end up playing some great poker!

You cannot make sophisticated plays against an unsophisticated player.
If you define sophistication as making some retarded, desparation bluff against a field of 5 players who have every intent to show down any pair; you're right. But within the framework of competition that is extremely loose/weak, there is quite a bit of sophistication in winning the most you possibly can. There's a substantial difference between the winrate of someone who knows how to play tight and folds when it's obvious that they have no chance of winning; and a player who is "sophisticated" enough to know how and when to push every small edge that they can.I'd say that being a long term 4BB/100 winner at a 1/2 table is quite a bit more of an acomplishment than being a 1BB/100 winner at a 5/10 table.Beating bad players doesnt require sophistication. But winning the most that you possibly can - does.

I took a 5 week break last fall that I didn't even realize happened until I looked back over my spreadsheet.Very strange. I guess I needed a break.Oh yea, when I came back I lost $250 in a session at 2/4 before I knocked the rust off and had a nice upswing.Taking breaks when you don't feel like playing is +EV. If you're not a pro don't grind it out like one. That's the worst part.

At least for a little while. And its not because I have been losing. I just don't have the desire to play. I think that I have just got tired of playing the same people every week in the home games that we have. I haven't played in 3 weeks and it really doens't bother me. Used to if I didn't play twice a week i was unhappy. And I am not really an online player but I love playing in a casino but the nearest casino is 4 hours away. I am not really sure what i am going to do. I picked up HOH and am just going to finish it and I guess figure out my poker plans then. I am 24, recent college grad and am bartending right now looking for jobs. Part of me wants to sell my boat and move to tunica, get a job and play poker. The other part of me says its time to be responsible. Anyone ever feel like this?
I don't see how you could even think of ever trying to play poker full time if you don't have just a crazy passion for the game.

It sounds like you're not playing beginners/bad players correctly. Not sure how you think you can play with the big boys if you can't beat the midgets.

The latest was at a 2-5 with $500 buy in ring game. I have jj 2 off the button and raise to 15. I get 2 callers. Flop is 259 with 2 hearts. I lead out with 45 dollars and get 1 call. Turn is the jack of hearts. I bet out 85 and the guy calls. River is a heart(don't remember the card). Guy put's in his last 25 bucks and obviously i call and he shows aq with ace being a heart. Now at this point I am looking for the dog to kick but can't find him. I couldn't even slepp that night. I know I need to let these kind of things go but it is easier said than done. Those who do let it go are the best players and I know that. Just wish I was able let it go.

Yeah, I hate +EV situations. Where's the cheapest table full of tight-aggressive, tricky pros?

Poker is one of the sickest things you can do for a living. My advice is to not do it, it's boring, it's easier to go broke as a poker player than at any other job. Seriously, dont do it. I love the game, but playing it 8 hours a day 5 days a week is another story. I plan on giving professional poker a try for a summer or two, but it really is sick.
Putting your dick through a meat grinder is a really sick thing to do. My advice is not to do it.I love putting my dick through a meat grinder, but actually doing it is another story. I plan on putting my dick through a meat grinder a few times, but it is really sick.

If you can get so bent out of shape by a hand that you lost where you were basically 50/50 to win throughout the entire hand, then maybe you should take a break from the felt.

But really now the way I played the hand even though it was basicly 50/50 drives me crazy even thinking about his calls.
