hats, sunglasses, and other accesories at the table

Recommended Posts

Now I know that this doesnt apply to everyone, but I have noticed this and I want to know if it happens to other people.Every since poker has gotten big i have seen more people in home games and casinos trying to be like the pros and that includes looking at them. When I play people that wear hats sunglasses and have thier I Pod are usually the worst players at the table. I think maybe its becasue they are trying to intimidate you or something by looking like Phil Hellmuth with his hat and glasses covering his face when they are trying to bluff you. Its even worse when at my home games someone shows up wearing glasses and a hat ready to play for $20......that person usually losses. When I go to the Borogta the people with thier sunglasses and hat are the dead money at the table. Now i know this doesnt apply to everyone, Im sure there are very skilled players that do wear the hats and sunglasses and win a lot, but from my expereince its like they are wearing those things more for image hoping people will be scared of them. If they are trying to be like the "better" players....well a lot of good players no a days dont really cover themselves up. People like Daniel, E Dawg, Gus, Doyle, Phil Ivey......etc......they dont wear sunglaseses or hats....i mean sometimes they do.....but overall they dont. the only pro that does wear that stuff now is Phil Hellmuth.....and we know how great hes doing...I know this is kinda of a dumb post but I just wanted to see if you guys notice the same things.....that the weaker players tend to wear these things (esp for low limits) just to "scare people" Cause in my games people with all these things usually lose

I have come to the conclusion that you have no idea what you're talking about. Please.. if you're going to contradict yourself in the middle of making a point, stop talking. Forever.I'm not joking.-adam

i get your point, if you want a theory then how about this one...the novice players are so scared that the more skilled players at the table will be able to read them that they cover themselves up, whereas the better players have found themselves at so many tables, that they arent so worried about it.

I don't wear sunglasses at the table because it can potentially make you sleepy. Less light contacting the retinas causes increased melatonin production and sleepies.Phil ivey wore them a few times (he claimed only once in an interview) but stopped because he misread his hand at a major tournament:

Some people wear sunglasses so that you can’t get a read on them. That’s just poker. Lots of top players don’t wear sunglasses. I tried to wear sunglasses once at the World Series and misread my hand. I threw them into the garbage can, and they were $1,100 sunglasses.Phil Ivey(Phil’s wife overheard this and said, “So, that’s where those went. I thought you lost them.” “Yeah,” he said. “I lost them in the garbage can.” “Those were nice sunglasses,” she said. “Yeah, so nice that they cost me a $100,000 pot.”)

I have to say....there are also a lot of young good players that wear hats and such and some have actually had good success. My theory is that the pros you listed probably started using glasses and such when they became big. Most of them probably didnt use them until they got popular. Now when they try, it probably throws off their game. They cant read as well, nor can they try to manipulate with their eyes. I think a player that sticks with whatever he started with is going to be better player than a person with the same experience who just switched it up.

I like to wear glasses when I play poker, but its not to intimidate or anything like that, I actually use them to help ME out, I wear sunglasses b/c I noticed awhile ago that people that I play with regularly were easily reading me, so I just wore them, not just for my eyes, but when I wear them, I feel calmer, my heart doesn't race, I don't shake, overall it just helps me focus on my game...

if i have a hat on before i go to play i will usually keep it on but the games i usually play in are with people i know and its more fun just to sit around and talk while you play then listen to music.one time i had my friend wear his giant headphones, sunglasses and hat to a game and everyone got a kick out of it. he is always the first one out.

I hate hats. I don't ever wear them. But I do wear sunglasses every once in a while. I used to think I could read people better because they didn't know I was looking at them. But there are lots of times where you can look and they wont notice, with or without sunglasses. So now it's just preference.

I wear the shades occasionally. Ive heard theres a tell dealing with ur pupils dialating when you get excited about ur hand, so a nice pair of mirrored glasses can definately block that. Also, wearing the glasses allows you to look at people without them noticing too much. Some people get angry when ur starring them down, and sometimes you dont want people to realize that ur looking at them while they are looking at the flop. The hat? well, if ur brim is down, no one will see ur reaction to ur hole cards if they're not right next to you I guess. What I really want to see is the guy who sits down next to you with a motorcycle helmet on. No tells from that face.......

Yeah original thread poster said it kinda bad, but I actually agree with him to some degree. Not headphones, that's fine. But the over-use of hats and sunglasses. It's fine to use them if you want, but people are acting like it's manditory, and "WOW, you don't wear sunglasses?!?". Like it's now a required uniform for poker players. When I said people above, I don't mean posters in this thread, I mean the random newcomers of poker, mainly live tourney players.I personally think sunglasses are kind of gay, but it's just that, personal. I wouldn't look down on other people who want to wear them a bit. I just get amused/annoyed both that people think hats/sunglasses are somehow required gear nowadays.Though just to be amusing, I might sometime wear a Jason-hockey-mask to a tourney and see if I get away with it. CAN YOU READ ME NOW BEEOTCH?

I would never where sunglasses at a low limit cash game in a casino, or a home game, because you don't want to intimidate the bad players. They'll get up and leave if they can, won't give you action, etc..In a tournament though, I think you want to be intimidating. Obviously you aren't going to intimidate a good player by wearing sunglasses, but it can intimidate a newbie. Which is good, because at a tournament they can't get up and leave.I just wore them for the first time ever in a home tournament this weekend, 19 players, only 1 I'd ever played with before. I was amazed because they really helped me as far as focusing on the action and not letting my eyes wander, etc.. It was also cool that I could look directly at someone and no one would know that I was actually looking at the person to his left, or right, etc.. Overall it actually helped my game I think, but I still wouldn't ever wear them in a friendly low limit cash game, or at a low limit casino game. But for tournaments, I'm now a fan.

"Though just to be amusing, I might sometime wear a Jason-hockey-mask to a tourney and see if I get away with it. CAN YOU READ ME NOW BEEOTCH?"I'd pay you a dollar if you can prove you played an entire tourney with one! That would be absolutely hilarious.

I find that most players you play against don't notice very often that you are reading them, or even looking at them. They are too caught up in looking at the cards, and thinking about what to do with them. ( I try to always be the best player at the table, or one of the best, to maximize my profit. Why play against players who are as good as you and will share the money you will take from the weaker players.) Since the weaker players notice only seldom, and tend to exhibit more "acting" tells when they do notice, I don't wear sunglasses to hide the fact that I'm looking at them. It often is better for them to know you're watching. If they wore sunglasses, it would prevent me from catching some of their tells, like when they glance at their chips, etc., but I'll still pick up something, or I'll just play more solid, and let skill win, since they'll make many more mistakes than I will in a session.

I've seen players at my local casino sit down at a 2/4 or 5/10 table put on the shades and then to play the worst weak/passive game I've ever seen! They'll chase everything to the river, showdown the worst hands when it was obvious they were beat before the flop. For the most part, they're young college-types who probably have been watching too much wpt or TILT on tv. When they sit at my table, I start drooling from all the money I'll be getting soon.....lol

A lot of times at the table I will "impersonate" the pros they see on TV. Since I am about 6'4", I can usually pull off a pretty good Hellmuth:http://davidmay.buzznet.com/user/?id=705402But one day I found out that pretending to Marcel Luske got me better cards:http://davidmay.buzznet.com/user/?id=729457Which got me a nice win. I also did a Daniel night. Wore a Thrashers jersye with a matching hat, and made the final table. No pics of that.I usually find that doing that helps to open the table to my comedy routine, which looses things up. Once I get the table laughing, I can usually start rolling pretty well, and get some great loose calls.
