silvergoose 0
So I got to play Stud hilo in Vegas on Thursday. I had gone expecting to find nothing remotely resembling stud hilo, but there it was, at the Luxor, with a 2500 dollar freeroll if you stay for 6 hours till midnight, so a free 100 for me, more for people who scooped more pots.Anyways, it was a 2-10 with 20 on the last card, but what was odd was that not only was there a qualifier, 8 or better, for the low, but there was a qualifier for the high as well. Two pair qualifies for high, but you cannot win high with just a pair or high card. Two or more hands that qualify for nothing chop, but a low hand vs a nothing hand wins the whole thing! Took me a little while to get used to that, but it changed the game dramatically.Something like split, or even wired kings or queens or what have you are generally playable if you can get the one or two low cards before you to fold, or raise to get the ones after you with mediocre hands to fold, and abandon very soon if you're going to get freerolled or an ace hits somewhere. But here split kings are utterly worthless. I stopped playing anything other than three cards to a low or rolled up trips, or three to a straight flush, because nothing else seemed worthwhile. High hands need to improve to even qualify for half, much less win, while if you have an eight low, you can scoop the whole thing. Also, it seemed as if hands like 247 or 258 become much more playable and split aces with a low card much less so, though of course they're still worth playing.I even loosely played a nine up with two low cards down, knowing that if I could catch three low cards, I'd have a concealed low which could theoretically take the whole pot. In regular stud 8, doing this will get you a max of half the pot, and usually none of it. But here, it actually seemed like something one could do once or twice to mix things up because it could scoop.I dunno, I was surprised enough to find any stud hilo that it took me a little while to figure this out, but anyone have any ideas? How exactly does this change the game?
KowboyKoop 0
That's wack. I will never ever play that game.
AlanBostick 0
Once, a few years back, I played at the Palms in a game of "9/11", which is high-low stud with a nine qualifier for low and aces or better qualifier for high. It's almost -- not quite -- as much of a low-hand *ss-kicking as high-low no-Q.The game had been billed to me as a great one for getting live ones, but the only players in it were sharks waiting for a live one to sit down. We took the antes from each other and told poker stories.
