checking it down...

Recommended Posts

So in the Full Tilt $10,500 guarentee tonight I had HoosierAlum at my table. He was all in for less than the bb and there are three total players. The flop comes xx9 and I hit a 9 so i bet about half the pot. The other guy in the pot told me that correct ettiquette(sp) is to check it down to multiply the chance to take the all in player out. I responded that we arent playing team poker and unless that player is sitting out or not there I am never going to check down my hand. Can someone please tell me the correct play?

It aint got shit to do with etiquette. You always make the right play.A lot of times Im just gonna play the ****ing hand. For example, if there are still hundreds of people in a tournament. Why do I really give a shit about knocking this one guy out?On the other hand if your at a final table it benefits you greatly to knock that guy out. Also it depends on the strength of your hand. If you think there is a good chance the all in guy may outdraw you...dont let that happen. Keep the other people in as insurance to make sure hes gone.Bottom Line:Do whatever benefits you the most.

Since he was all in for less than the bb, you are defending a side-pot by betting there. If you are in the money already, or close to it, there is something to be said for checking it down, since it moves you up in money by knocking someone out, and you do not want to push a guy out of the hand that might have been able to knock out the all-in player if it was checked down.

The correct play is to bet when you think you have the best hand (I would say with the exception of ace high). Especially when you have a pair of nines on the flop your hand is vulnerable to being outdrawn by the other player. You better make him pay for it. I think it's rude and stupid when someone bets in this situation when the flop missed them and they don't have any hand at all. But for me that's about it when it comes to etiquette in poker. You did the right thing and if the guy is worried about knocking the other player out he can call your bet.

If there are three left then you should check it down so one of you can eliminate the all in and get to heads up. It benefits you.

If you're playing live and the all in guy erupts in excitement after seeing the flop, you probably dont want to bet.If you have reason to believe that you have a strong but vulnerable hand that is likely leading against the all in, bet. The great part is that people will call you with cards that you're leading just to make sure that the allin guy gets eliminated. And sure enough, they wont value bet _you_ without a very strong hand.
