yet another "going to vegas" thread

Recommended Posts

So I just found out that my bride's boss is sending her to Vegas for a week at the end of Feb./beginning of March for seminars and conferences and that I was welcome to go, all I have to do is buy the plane ticket. Done. Didn't have to think about that one for very long.So ... routine first-timer questions ... Poker related:- what casinos have the juiciest low limit tables (we'll be staying at the MGM)?- any one place to avoid like the plague for any particular reason?Non-poker related:- any restaurants that are a must-eat that won't break the bank?- any FCP'ers going to be in the area the last weekend of Feb./first week of March?Any and all input/suggestions are greatly appreciated!

I'll be getting there March 4th... probably when you're on your way home. I'm interested to hear some answers to your questions as well.I believe I'll be staying at the Flamingo and will definately be checking out Caesar's new poker room.

I was last in Vegas about a year ago, so I'm sure everything has changed, but I played quite a bit at the Aladdin, and I liked it there. Staff was very accomodating, and the games were good. I didn't book a big winner or anything, though I should have. I spent too much time watching the NFL playoff games and not enough time watching my opponents at the table. I also wanted to play at the Orleans, but never got a chance. I think they spread more games than a lot of places, so if you're into Omaha, or Omaha 8 you may want to give it a look.

Since you're staying at the MGM, they have very soft 2/4, 3/6, and 4/8 games, especially on the weekend. I've heard that the Flamingo and Excalibur also have soft games, but the MGM room is much nicer.I don't think at a low limit that there's anywhere on the strip that you need to avoid. Some places (like the MGM) will give you better comps then others (like the Mirage, where you'll get no comps at all.Make sure that you get a players card, if you're staying at the MGM to get poker room rate and also $1 per hour played in comps. As far as restaraunts, I love Emeril's in the MGM, but it's not exactly cheap. The Top of the World in the Strat is also neat because you get a great view, since the restaraunt rotates giving you a good view of the strip and downtown.Have fun!!

If you're going to hit a Vegas buffet, go with the Bellagio. It's a little pricier than most but definitely worth it, especially if you can catch brunch there on a Sunday. There are tons of great real restaurants but that all depends on what you're willing to spend.

For poker, check out MGM's room. For food, try the dinner buffet at the Flamingo. It's like $16.99 (or close to that) for a prime rib & seafood buffet. It's great, and the line to get in usually moves quickly. Also, the Paris has a phenomenal breakfast buffet, though it's a little pricey at over $20 per person.Wow, I had more to say about the food than the poker. Hmmm.

Binions has a good $1/$2NL game. The Wynn has a good $1/$3 NL game.

Clark County Detention Center.
Non-poker related:any restaurants that are a must-eat that won't break the bank?
The Bootlegger - 7700 Las Vegas Blvd S.
any FCP'ers going to be in the area the last weekend of Feb./first week of March?
Not I.
Any and all input/suggestions are greatly appreciated!
Get enough sleep. IF u plan on using Mass Transit a great deal purchase either $5 day passes or a 30 day pass for $30. U will save money.

For poker I recomend the 1-3nl game at wynn. Exelent poker room, very good beverage service(red bull, iced mocha lattes, big strong alcohol beverages if u dare) served by the best looking and friendliest waitresses. Last time i was there i had 3 winning session and no one was miserable at the tables which is a plus. They also have 4-8 limit if u perfer. If you are in vegas for a good time at the tables stay away from the bellagio and the mirage. They have tougher competition and more grumpy players trying to grind out the rent money. For restauraunts I like Emerils. Lunch for 2 will run you about 60 dollars with dessert(amazing banana cream pie but i have tried others there and there all very good). I can honestly say I have had the best meals i have ever had here and it is always a must when I am in Vegas. $60 dollars for 2 for lunch sounds like alot but you will find all restauraunts in the major hotels are expesive. For buffets the Alladin has the best but the bellagios is also exelent with some very exotic meat dishes(wild boar, pheasant, rabbit, shark). Have fun and good luck

I second that. I've been there for dinner two or three times and it's been absolutely fantastic every time. If you want to splurge on dinner, go there and do the chef's tasting menu with the wine pairings and you will not be disappointed.

During that time, march 2-5 they will have the National heads up championship at Caesars. I just happened to get lucky last year and was stayin at the Golden Nugget during the event. Great event to attend you see all the big stars and if its like last years the public has access to the players(when there not playing of course). worth spending a few hours watching and seeing what TV poker is all about.

MGM also has a weak 1/2 NL game, as does the aladdin. for food, bally's has a great breakfast buffet (that's where i stayed) for 14.00. on the fifth floor at imperial palace is a great pizza place that i highly recommend. whatever you do, don't get the buffet at boardwalk (across from MGM). even though it's cheaper than most places, it's not very good quality.

Finding a juicy game I think will just depend on your luck in finding a juicy table. I got a chance to play at Caesars for a few hours at the 1-2 NL table. I received twenty 5 dollar chips when I bought in for 100. I was a bit surprised a first. The minimum raise was to ten, although we occassional raises to fifteen and twenty. If you like that kind of action, check it out.

i disagree with the binions game being "juicy"... its a no cap buyin nl game and there is usually only one table going... and they are all regulars... plus downtown is ghetto... i would stick to where you are staying OP, the mgm and excalibur around there down on the strip.. thats where youre gonna find the juiciest nl games without guys sitting down with ridiculous amounts of money, like 10k+++

Ill be in vegas the 27-30th. I was wondering if anyone knows of any good tournaments with less than a $100 buy in. Ill be going with a group and we'll basically just be looking for somewhere we can play for a few hours if one of us goes deep without investing too much money. Thanks.

the monorail is cool to try once or twice but at 5$ a trip its starts to add up ~ get a bus pass and save the monorail rides for you and the woman !!!food for your self~ get food vouchers from the players card at the mgm ~ for you and the wife ~ see what she is allowed to write off thru work ~ most casino's offer restaurants for travelers on all size budgets~Is your wife going to be at the Las vegas convention center? think about playing at the IP and walking over to Caesars to see the heads up action,

I would avoid the tournaments at the Luxor though. I know the MGM, Harrah's, and Sahara have low buy in tournaments than the crapshoot at the Luxor, unless their structure has changed greatly in the past year.

Thanks for all the great responses. I'll be there from 2/25 thru 3/2 so I'll miss the Head's Up championship (and you, Spade). I wonder if this means Helmuth will be there early donking money off in the cash games? Hmmmmmm ...Sounds like I'll stay "close to home" to start if the games at the MGM are that good. Gonna HAVE to check out the Bellagio and Wynn at some point, though.

this guy doent want a 300$ meal
Not unless you're buying  Thanks again for all the info. And if any FCP'ers are going to be there, let me know.

I'll just miss you. I'll be there 19-23rd of Feb. Check aout Anthony Curtis's "lasvegasadvisor" website. A good top ten list that he updates. I have done the Ellis Islnad steak which is on his #1 spot and it was well worth it. It's off the strip it just depends where you are staying. If you are staying close then take the walk over. Best meal I've ever had was at Emerils "Delmonico" at the Venetian. But only if you want to spend 50-75 per person when it's over.If you want try the Wynn's 1-3 no limit. The $3 chip will screw with your mind dude.

Definitely check out the Orleans casino, both for the pokerroom, and for this great little italian restaurant they have there.I can't remember what it was called, but it's sorta hidden in the casino, behind the video poker machines almost directlyacross from the buffet place. The food was great, and super cheap for Vegas.3 of us ate there probably 5-6 times through the week, and with a few beers each, I don't think the bill was ever over$40 bucks, and for 3 people, that was pretty decent. As for the poker room, they do tend to spread Omaha Hi/Loas well as Holdem, but usually I only saw H/L at the $4/8limit. HE was pretty good, they have both limit and NL gamesand the room was usually pretty active. I never saw any 7-stud game happening, nor an "interest list" but for the most partthe management was pretty good as far as getting games going, and moving the list along. Also, the "floor" was good to the players too. I saw a guy get a beer tossed at him from across the table. The floor immediately turfedthe thrower and then they brought the soaking wet guy a brandnew shirt...lol.They also have 2 tourneys a day that are relatively inexpensivebut have decent structures.Have a great time.
